Gonna be getting myself one of those once Christmas bills have been paid.

Not that I need one. The TC Classic 450 is a super amp but just missing the EBS tone I had with my old HD350.

Bass-wise, pretty happy.

It was in Musical Exchanges in Birmingham for a number of years too.

Yeah, I remember it from when I worked there.

Sooooooooo many hundreds of hands have been over that bass over the years because of the novelity value of a twin neck 4 and 8 string.

Whilst on the subject of Ex-Sound Control....good to see Gaz Chapman getting it on with Cryer ;-)

I'll take two...they are the same config but different sounds. They can be interchangeable and both can cover the set..I just pick which one I like/prefer in soundcheck or set-up.
If a venue is too small to have two basses on the stand, it is probably too small anyway, so we don't do it.

Ok, first impressions.

This thing sounds amazing.
It really has kept true to that EBS sound.
From playing in my room i'd happily say its just as loud as my hd350 was when paired with a 210. I've got a backline gig tonight so i'll report back on that later.
Really really impressed with the cabs, rather than having a rotary tweeter control they've got a simple on/off switch & with them turned off you get a really nice old school sound, sounds great with my neck pickup.
I wouldn't say the cabs were heavy or light but saying this they are an easy one hand lift. A lot easier to carry than my old epifani.

So yeah, as of now i'm totally loving it. Going to put it through it's paces tonight and report back.

Also, i hope to get some time next week to record a full video review of the amp to show all lovely people.

6. Always taken two as I've had a top banana Levys Double Gig bag for donkeys years meaning it's just as much effort to carry one bass as two. However, in the many hundreds of gigs, I've only NEEDED a backup bass twice (battery death and a faulty switchcraft jack socket).

It's win-win for me. Apart from helping me out the soft-and-stinky in instances like the above, I like having two as it gives me tonal options and allows me a bit of variety if I fancy a change.

It's all down to using the right earplugs. If you use cheap foam jobbies (such as I used to use at track days) then they protect your ears from loudness ... they do absolutely nothing to help you hear things.

If you use ER20's (or, for considerably more money, ER15's or ER25's which are moulded precisely to your ears) then not only are your ears protected but you can still hear everything.
+ another!

I had some ER15's moulded a few years ago. Blinkingly expensive at the time but it's been a life- (or should I say hearing-) saver.

As already said, cheap earplugs are pretty agricultural and false economy. They'll stop your hearing getting damaged but at the sacrifice of the quality of sound you do hear when you wear them. Not ideal if you're depending on hearing the full sonic picture to successfully make your music.

I'm no expert so I don't mind being corrected but better designed plugs like the ER15's attenuate across the frequency range which mean you're still in theory hearing the whole sonic picture, only not as loud. In the ER15's case, it's about -15db. Surprise, surprise eh? :)

I love mine because they not only protect my hearing but REALLY help me sing because I can physically/mechanically hear myself, without having to rely wholly on monitoring. The old "stick your fingers in your ear whilst you sing" thing.

It does take some adjusting to playing with them in but you soon get used to it. I tend to do the sound check with them out/half in to make sure everything sounds ok but they're in the moment I'm happy with my tone and volume.

Would be fantastic if they have that EBS tone in such a light and compact package, and hopefully it has enough punch. Price seemed pretty good too at £399.
From what they were saying in the shop the demo unit they listened to was impressively loud for 250 watts, will reserve judgement until I hear it myself.
I'm hoping the same too, the idea that I can get that HD/TD tone in such a small package is really appealing to me.

Keep us posted Simon as soon as they get the DOA replaced! :)

9. I swapped the stock pickup in my old Sterling out with a Nordstrand 4.3. It was fan-flipping-tastic. Don't get me wrong, the Sterling was good but the Nordy made a great bass even greater. Gave it a real Pre-EB alnico tone.

The Ray version would be a Nordstrand 4.2 I believe (the 4.3 is the series/parallel jobbie that connects to the switch on the Sterling).

10. Hi Nige,

I've got an M13 that I use. Which is like lots of M5's in one box. lol

They're fantastic bits of kit in my opinion. A great way of having loads of stomp pedals in one box. They're designed for stompbox modelling only so I love mine because they're ONLY effects, no amp or cab modelling which I never used/needed when I had Bass PODs/XT Lives previously.

All but a few are near as dammit (for me) to the originals. The modulations, delays and distortions are particularly great and sound good for bass.

Being true-bypass, they don't suck your signal when not in use. They're also incredibly tactile so are great if you're into your tweakery. Dead easy to swap between effect group, effect type and then into the specifics of the individual effect.

Not having used an M5, dunno whether or not you'd benefit from an expression pedal at some point to control some of the wahs or distortions.

Nip along to PMT and give one a whirl? IMHO, at the reasonable price for all those great stompbox models, even if you don't get on with it, you'll be able to shift it on without losing a lot of money on it.

Call us if you want more info.

11. I've got one of these.

Brought it years ago and it's been on a bit of a journey as it's been refinished a couple of times and defretted.

Playability wise, they're really good. Not in the same ballpark as the Euros and US models I've owned over the years but good still.

I've got Luminlay Inserts on both my ACG's and they are fantastic.
http://www.luminlay.com/
OK you need a guitar tech or luthier to fit them, but they are a real alternative to LED's and way, way cheaper.
They look really good. Like the idea that fitting them is pretty simple and doesn't involve major surgery to your bass.

How long do they stay bright for if you have to use the LED to activate them?

13. My TC rig replaced an EBS one earlier in the year. I'd gigged with the EBS stuff for the best part of 10 years.

In terms of getting something to run at 2ohms, if you want to go down the route of two 4ohm Proline cabs, I'd go for a HD350 or TD650/660 (if funds allow). I know Panthairsoft is selling his HD350 for a muchly super price. Personally I'd go for that as it's a fantastic head, tone to die for and a HUGE output for the wattage rating. I'd never in all the years I had mine ever struggled with volume.

If you're happy with the TC head and are lusting after the tone produced by the that and the Proline cabs, are you sure that the single 4 ohm cab wouldn't be a solution? Having used one for years, they're SERIOUSLY loud and have SERIOUS headroom. Even using a single Proline 410 cab, I'd be surprised if you're struggling for volume driving it with a RH450/RH750.

However, as chris_b pointed out, if you're playing anything bigger than a pub gig, you're DI'd so having a snarling behemoth of a rig is a bit irrelivent (IMHO of course)

:)

His intro to this tune just about sums him up, i think his style required an Active, nine volt battery driven right hand technique.

Just fantastic.

Check this out too. Great playing.....
