to be honest I'm not sure I could identify with the whole ethos behind the music, not being a black american in the 70's myself... but it sounded good :)

That would be the ethos behind the music according to the producers of the programme? I like thousands of others here in the UK at the time who weren't black, didn't live in the Bronx, Watts or 12th Street Detroit but still appreciated the music so much so that the UK record companies pressed thousands of funk LPs in the golden period of funk from the late 60s to early 80s. The programme did give the impression that you had to be a black American at the time to appreciate or indeed know anything about it. That's presumably because their research was based that side of the pond and the impact of funk only in the US which seems strange as the programme was aimed at a British audience many of who would have been well aware of the impact of funk in 70s Britain..

So easy on here to search for X bass and see what prices the are ACTUALLY selling at.
I'm not sure how you would know what a bass ACTUALLY sold for here on BC.

Lots of people have made offers for basses that i've had for sale but no one apart from me and the buyer would ever know the actual price paid.

Most of the covers I love, are of songs I like so much its hard to say they are better, just an awesome song to start with made different, in a fantastic way ..

    Absolutely amazing cover ..

That's another cover that was more well known than the original for many years. Certainly up to c1990 and the renewed interest in Gil Scott-Heron. Having heard both versions around the time they were released i still prefer the GSH original for it's more sparse production. Both great versions though and both sung by people who you believed they knew and meant every word they were singing.

  4. Great album and Boz Scaggs first after leaving the Steve Miller Band. My brother bought this on it's release and we probably wore it out over the next few years in our house. Still have a copy in my collection though. A Muscle Shoals classic. :)

This is probably my favourite from that album......

About 90seconds of James Brown vocals (copyright ex's?) - I'll give it a glance, but us old farts were around at the time, so I'm not expecting much that's gonna rock my world................

As another old fart who was around at the time i tend to feel the same. Whenever i watch programmes that are about a part of my youth i now realise how my dear old Dad used to feel when we watched a TV programme about WW2.

  6.
I think Ringo does a great job of "You're Sixteen". Johnny Burnette is a great singer and does sing technically better than Ringo, but I think his recording suffers from the rather boring arrangement.
It's very much an age thing with a lot of covers. The Johnny Burnette arrangement is very much of it's time but at the time was anything but boring. I think it's a generation thing that we are never going to agree on and shouldn't agree as we are seeing them from a totally different angle and that's one of the reasons these sort of threads are interesting.

    Original: Sorrow by The McCoys

    Cover: Sorrow by David Bowie
This is an interesting one because i would imagine most here on BC would not only be more familiar with the Bowie version but also heard his version first. I bought the McCoys 45 the week it was released so was used to years of hearing it before the Bowie version arrived and that makes a big difference on how we feel about cover versions.

Original: You're Sixteen by Johnny Burnette

Cover: You're Sixteen by Ringo Starr (with a little help by Harry Nilsson and Paul McCartney)

The singing of the great Johnny Burnette and Ringo both bring me close to tears for completely different reasons. :(

One of these is a classic and one should never have seen the light of day.

Two years before Rod Stewart was the Chris Farlowe version of Mike D'Abo's Handbags and Gladrags.

They'll be saying next that Sailing isn't a Rod original. Is nothing sacred?

I knew that Lieber & Stoller wrote a lot of hits, but just been to Wiki
and there are a few there I didn't realise were written by them, or at least
    collaborations.
For anyone with an interest in Leiber & Stoller this is a must have:

Joan Morris & William Bolcom "Other Songs By Leiber and Stoller'. Released in the 70s on the Nonesuch label it has some Leiber & Stoller classics sung by a Mezzo-Soprano with Piano accompaniment. Their version of 'Black Denim Trousers and Motorcycle Boots' is worth the price alone!

If your gonna cover a song make it your own , fantastic arrangement this compared to Dion's version

    Donald at his best

Yes great version but how does it compare to the original (which of course wasn't by Dion)? :)
