1. Bought a Mesa Scout 12" from Tom.
Very prompt on responses, deal done thro to delivery very quickly,
despite him being away from home and very busy....and a great deal!
Thanks Tom,
Nodd

2. Hi,
Just wondered if you had an opinion on what cab from your range would pair well with a Mesa Walkabout?
I'm using a P-bass with either a Wizzy 12 or the Scout 15" at the moment.
The Wizzy is a bit too 'polite' and the 15" just a bit too big.
I'd describe my sound as quite fat and raspy, aggressive finger style, no real need for zingy highs.
Cheers,
Nodd

3. I own a relatively loud Eko BA4fl,
but it doesn't compete with other acoustic instruments outside of the living room.
Its also a bit uncomfortable due to the body size.
Might I suggest, if DB isn't a workable solution,
using an ABG or Kala U-bass
thro one of those cheapish battery powered Karaoke/PA cabs?
They are loud, sound OK, also cheap, especially secondhand, and can be used for other instruments too.

4. Hi Gang,
I'm in Glasgow working on 'The Games' live events, for 5 weeks.
I haven't been able to bring up a bass due to essential kit being a priority.

I'd love to have a bass to use whilst here, and perhaps squeeze in a jam or two.
Two requests of you gang:
Anyone got a very cheap but playable lefty bass to sell, or loan/hire to me?
(Theres' nothing in the pawn shops at the moment.

Where are the happening jams?

Thanks in anticipation,
Nodd

5. I had a bass player colleague I was 'Mentoring' through the early stages of bass-playing.
I found her a similar Yamaha as her first proper bass.
It was a great starter and adaptable as well as playable.
Grab it!

6. Having recently acquired a Squier Precision Special as my 'laboratory' bass
and having already fitted a new scratchplate (BassDoc) and chrome pick up cover.
I though I'd make my first foray into a change in the control cavity....

I had been looking at and listening to the various options available on the "Varitone" type switchable tone control front.
as is usual with the F-Type basses the tone control is pretty useless, both on my Squier and my P.
I wasn't going to flash the cash on a Stellartone but thought I'd try one of the cheaper options.
I decided to try this:

6 position VARITONE switch for guitar and bass

http://www.ebay.co.u...984.m1439.l2649

not much of a gamble at £14.99, no battery - passive.
Installation looked relatively straight forward.

However, it took a fair bit of finessing to make it fit in the cavity.
Not the fault of the unit,
rather that the space available was tight, too shallow
and wouldn't allow me to line it up with the existing position on the pick guard.
So some delicate filing of the pot, a bit of digging out of the cavity...and some elongation of the pick guard hole later
and its in!
The actual replacement of the component was easy, solder off the old, solder in the new. No Battery

It has definitely improved the options.
There are 6 settings - one being bypass.
At least four of them are useful, its surprising the different sound characteristics available from it.
Yes, it also affects the output level but that can be trimmed on the Vol. controls.

The seller was really helpful as I figured out the fitting issues, and I've given him some feedback.
Now, should I add one to my Fender P?
Although I won't if it means working on the cavity.

7. I haven't tried the DR BB's,
but had been using the Nexus black coated.
They do sound like Roto's... duh
but the coating wore off too quickly (after a couple of hours).

If Black coating is your thing, maybe try the Aurora strings from the US.
I've had them on for around 8 weeks, average 1 gig per week plus rehearsal,
they're still coated, but they have lost their zing which suits me!

8. Cheers WoT, its the P that is my 'core' sound, the DB and fretless aspect is the second string to my (bull) fiddle

Ta Rhys, its the perception of the volume, rather than the actuality, I am not a loud player.
It just that sometime 'folkie' response to electric instruments.
Same amp, same volume but....

Thanks for the Dorset input, interestingly I have a Sinsonido Guitar, I will look into that option.
