Too right, from hereon in it should be known as 'Dale's Law'.

Is that like Cole's Law? -

The question of artistic integrity arises every time you have to choose between doing what will, in your view, result in the best outcome musically, and doing what will be most popular or lucrative. If you never experience this conflict, you are probably Simon Cowell.
Oh god. I think mentioning Simon Cowell in a thread is now of the same rank as mentioning Hitler. -

We're getting into the Art vs Commerce debate, aren't we. Its a continuum not a case of absolutes. Few would consider music written for an advert to be Art but Art used as backing music for an advert still has integrity. The problem with people like Jesse J (I know only one song by her) is that, as 'artiists' they don't need to be told what to do by the industry because industry has already screened out the folk who would not 'do the right thing'. So, whatever she does, they will be happy because it ain't gonna be free jazz, is it? I would love it if she came out and did a prog rock cd for its own sake because, as an 'artist', that is where here muse took herWhy do I think that to be unlikely
PS none of this matters a jot.

I consider good/great graphic design to be art, and I see no real difference between that and good/great music written for an advertisement and good/great music written to please the writer. After all, Air on a G String is a wonderful piece of music, and that was written for a Hamlet cigar advert. -

Are you serious?

People make all sorts of puerile, lazy, unresearched assumptions about great looking artistes who can sing, dance, perform and write to an excellent standard. I think Ixxwj must be a music journalist.
Have you seen the 'Kate Bush is a Talentless Tart' thread ? -

I don't think anyone has a problem with corporations booking bands for a gig like this. I suspect many of these big players take the gig for £1m and give the money to charity. My only problem starts when the corporate dollar starts to define content or when the artist (or whoever is being paid) starts 'promoting' a product to their fans; that feels a little manipulative, especially when the fans are kids. Its the same with big budget movies that are just toy adverts. It happens and will always happen but I think it just shows what these kinds of artists are about. Maybe artists is the wrong word, in such cases; 'sales people', 'promoters', hawkers'?

Blimey. -
Well, it's all over. Oyster House finally closes the door and has gone into administration. But wait! It opens again! Rebranded as Green Chilli Media.
Hope the Oyster House creditors get their money. -

I didn't say there was any logic to my outburst! Just inexplicable dismay. I got this (maybe old fashioned) view where when i want to see a band i like i go for the music and the atmosphere - being surrounded by like-minded souls etc. I don't want to go to a corporate event with "Blackberry" flashing on video screens behind the artist and men in suits lurking in the shadows and many punters guests by invitation from the corporation.
Argh! It wasn't a GIG with paying punters! It was a corporate event with entertainment, like they have at most corporate events. -

Here's a sign of the times. The bit about the stabbing hardly registered! I am so used to reading about stabbings now that i kind of skimmed over that bit. I was more confused/dismayed about their being a party organised to celebrate an Instant Messaging service...
Weren't they promoting the BBM service? Blackberry are losing market share and need to up their game and do some marketing. What is there to be dismayed about? -
I don't think Jessie J counts as an artist..
Is this supposed to be a joke mate?
She is very talented and a great singer, performer and songwriter. Also her bassist is a respected member of Basschat. -
Yep - finally flipped
It was the first headline i found on the BBC website and on reading the story found myself a bit dismayed - thats all.
What, about the 'stabbing' with a bottle? -
I don't understand the point of this thread. Bands have done corporate gigs for aeons. Even Bach had a corporate gig really.

Just glanced at this. Only a few years ago this would have been very uncool. Now it seems that the corporate world are using the latest artists to promote their wares and the artists seem happy to comply.
When i was a nipper there always appeared to be a healthy disconnet between popular music and the corporate world. These boundaries seem to have been broken. I blame Live Aid and such like for showing business heads how "marketable" musicians can help promote an idea, service or product.
They say that you get the society that you deserve. Help...

Jessie J had earlier performed at the event to promote Blackberry's instant messaging service.

Have you gone slightly mad? -
I think I know what you mean, it's just a case of they're having fun playing interesting/difficult music instead of trying to convey anything. It's very impressive though and I'd definitely go to a gig... although I'd probably feel like a technically rubbish musician afterwards
That's all totally cool mate, just that none of what you have written bears much relation to music, that's all. -
Have a listen to the new album if you get chance siddx, you can hear it on their band camp for free. There's a lot more exciting things going on in it, of course IMO.
Thanks mate, I have checked out quite a few vids in the recent past on the other SP thread, but I'm afraid it does nothing for me, it seems devoid of romance, edgy as a billiard ball, etc. -
They are fabulous, and there are some nice little things going on here and there, but I'm sorry, it bores me rigid.

Great little app. I wanted to learn a lovely but tricky arpeggio guitar line on a T-Ride album and found I couldn't hear the notes properly, I was thinking it was in purely descending and ascending minor thirds, but I started realising I was hearing wrongly and that the bass harmony was making it sound like that, it was nothing of the sort for the first half. I digress.
This app is brilliant, and keeps the original pitch down to about 45% of the tempo. Great in/out section loop & repeat facility which allows you to save the track to its playlist with any loop sections memorised. Tuning to cents and semitones. Also master volume, pan, bass and treble cut and boost. Works with Quicktime video too.
£7.99 as a download Mac app from the Apple Store, not sure about the Windows version. You can download a free trial.
Really useful.
So, an actual pair of real living musical geniuses?

Really like them both, the JC vid is really good, reminds me of Martin Grech.
