I actually hate 90% of our set. I would love to play songs that I like, that are fresh. I'm really jealous of our drummer cos he has the same taste in music as me and has another band he plays in who do just rock stuff. I would love another band but can't as I work away and only have time for the one band

You can't chuck songs cos they are boring! I agree it's poor playing easy basslines after a while, but you simply have to, if you are a pub covers band, play what the public wants to hear.
We have been playing for years and always like to throw in interesting songs that we like but always end up going back to the dreaded brown eyed girl and Galway girl. I hate these songs but the trouble is, the drunken masses like them because they know them. Tell your band that if they want gigs, they are gonna have to make sacrifices in their musical integrity to a large extent.
Maybe once they have faced up to this, they might get stuck in and learn enough for a set. Once you have a name for yourselves, you can drop in the odd "good tune" Good luck man !

Thing is, maybe they didn't think it was that important to mention it and now it's grown so it's awkward. You have to speak to them and clear the air before doing anything rash

A few years ago, I was in Chicago for a holiday and we went to Milwaukee to see the Summerfest festival. Reo Speedwagon had played and we met some young girls who had managed to get backstage with them. All they could say was " they were all really old"....I was like...." REALLY?"

That's a valid approach with cabs that are quite different in their responses, being specifically designed to operate well only in the lows and only in the mids and highs. Ampeg cabs are not. Agreed and so by that logic, unless you are playing really large venues, the 4x10 should be enough for most players

Worst amp I ever had was a Hartke VX 2x 10. I hated the thin sound it produced! Played it only once live before selling it

Still have an Ashdown 2 x 10 combo and I thought it was an amazing little thing. I loved the sound it gave me and it was my main workhorse throughout the 90's playing many a pub gig. Cannot understand why so many folk hate them. I still use mine for my electronic drum kit. Great piece of kit

If she sings well and works the crowd well, Im not sure that you really have a problem. Just cos she's not Janis joplin, doesn't mean she is a poor singist. I say, let her get on with it and enjoy playing with a good singer

Buy new strings man. You can get cheap sets on ebay. I would never repair a short string. The hassle involved is too much for me

I bought a cheap one years ago and have NEVER been able to keep it in tune. I was going through a bluegrass phase and also bought a banjo. Had more luck with that but never found any local teachers, so gave up. Bass and guitar all the way for me now

He didn't say he had bought them yet. I think he is just asking about the cabs to ascertain which would be best to buy.

I have an Ampeg HLF 4x 10 and I have to say, its a great cab. The only reason I don't use it anymore is because I got a Barefaced super twin. I find the Barefaced cab a bit more to my liking, but not knocking the Ampeg, its still a great cab. A bit boomier than the Barefaced, but if you are looking at using it a in a classic rock outfit, then I reckon you have found your baby.
Im sorry, I can't comment on the HE as Ive never tried one and never a 1x 15, but to be honest, I got more than enough bottom end with the 4 10's, I think if you elevated the 4x 10 , you would have plenty in your ear

At the end of the day , is GAS really hurting anyone else? I suspect that the only people who are offended by GAS, are people who are short of money and can't join in, or are very content with their lot and don't want any more gear, (which probably means they have exhausted their GAS awhile back)

Ok, on the whole players of a certain style do tend to sway towards a certain type of guitar. I may have chosen my wording wrong.

My instrument options are not limited as I play in a covers band who are not signed to a label. If I was in a heavy metal band, appearing on stage at a festival, I might avoid using a P bass, then again in a country and Western band, I might avoid using a Spector. I am merely saying, as someone asked about fashions of guitars, that players tend to use what suits their type of music

Point one: Fair enough, but when have you ever seen a c/w guitarist using a flying V? Or for that matter, as mentioned above, a Steinberger bass...just saying

Point two: If you choose to think of my beliefs as limiting, then so be it but as mentioned above, you see c/w players MAINLY using Fenders. I never said it was a hard and fast rule

Is there really any point in going over and over this anyway?
