Taking the thread back in the general direction of the original posting, along with age and the amount of work/use the bass has had, one primary issue to factor in has to be the material used on the instrument when it was manufactured.
Consider Fender (as this is generally the benchmark for wear'n'tear); they stopped using nitrocellulose on their guitars in the late 1960s...this finish was soft/prone to drying out/crackling/peeling and reacted with rubber in such a way that the finish would melt after prolonged exposure. (It wasn't uncommon for guitars to be returned to Fender for refinishing.) After nitro was discontinued, Fender moved to a polyurethane finish. Hard/brittle/bombproof.
With this in mind, it's feasible that if you had a two identical Fender basses from 1968-70, both of which were subject to exactly the same level of daily usage and care over a period of 40+ years, it stands to reason that the nitro-finished model would/should be expected to be in worse condition than the poly finished version. This isn't to say that all poly (or nitro) finishes are identical. A generalization is that it's probably a fair comment to say that a 50 year old Poly finish will look considerably better that a 50 year old nitro one.
In closing, the oldest bass I owned from Fender was a 1979 Precision. Poly. I used that bass for 20+ years. I jammed/gigged with it two or three times a week and it was played daily and it barely had a ding on it. There are guys on here who have 50s/60s basses who I'm sure will be happy to share their opinions and experiences. Everyone has their own experiences and production values differ from manufacturer to manufacturer.

I would like it more (in chrome) if there was a way of retro-fitting a 60s style two part bridge, but as things stand, mine will get a Supertone the day it arrives.. I'm really not a fan of the three point monstrosities that Gibson put on their basses.

Hmmm. All three of my Thunderbirds have side mounted output-jacks. (Some new arrivals since the original faux pas.)

Has anyone had an order completed within Europe?
Not yet. Key Music told me that Gibson would be fulfilling all orders globally, so I will still be on track for mid-January. Elsewhere (I think LBO), there was talk of these being a limited run anyway...400 of each model was mentioned.

I thought you'd sold that one Rob.

I'm going to give this baby a pre-Chrimbo bump. Shoot me a sensible offer if interested, otherwise it'll just stay in the rack! If you're local, you're more than welcome to test drive it at mine.
I used this at a jam last night, really just to see whether it would fit in with what I'm doing musically...getting some nice overdriven sounds out of it through a Line6 (guitar) POD and a Boss ODB3 overdrive.
Thanks

Thanks for the offer...may be in touch!

Has anyone got a power amp - mono or stereo - I can have a loan of for a few hours? I just want to see whether I can integrate something into my existing setup.
I'm based in Crowthrone, Berkshire...close to Bracknell/Reading. I can collect or if you want to accompany the amp on it's date, I'll gladly throw in coffee and cakes!

One surefire way to increase the value of a new bass is to break it up into its individual parts/components and sell these off individually, a la the Stratosphere seller on eBay.

£600 shipped. £20 a string.

I have no idea why this is still here. What's wrong with you people?? If I didn't already have four TBs and another NR coming in January, I'd have this like a shot. I'll trade you my Waterstone.
Have a bump.

First pic of the vintage sunburst is up on LBO.

Don't own one, but noodled on one for about half hour in the US this summer and really liked it. The component parts (jazz body, precision profile neck) was a decent combination, especially for my gorilla sized hands. I didn't like the colour (green) or the pearlescent scratchplate. The single volume control was fine, sounded decent enough through a variety of amps. I know they used to do a black/black/rosewood issue which is more me.
Body styling aside, it's effectively a Precision without a tone control...you could always wire in a single stack knob if that was going to be an issue.

Over on the LBO one of the guys just picked up his NR in pelham blue and has posted a couple of pictures. Very pretty bass.
Key Music are telling me delivery for mine is going to be mid-December to mid-January 2013. Apparently Thomann have already sold out their allotment.

Time to say goodbye to this. It's a minty series 1, #33, 34" scale. I'll throw in a new set of D'Addario's and a long Levy's 3" strap. It's fitted with Dunlop Straploks, but is otherwise 100% stock. It comes with a very flimsy Waterstone gig-bag.
Immense tone! Super rare.
Will sell for £650 shipped. No trades please.
Cheers

He has actually does have a book out.

There's a white one on Ishibashi. Needs a bit of TLC (and a Gibson truss rod cover), but stupid cheap @ £550.

Did this go?

I'll put some pics up, yes. I have a Hipshot Supertone bridge on order, so I'll do before and afters...I really don't get on with the three-point bridges. Release date is supposed to be 25/10, but I've actually no idea when it'll arrive.

...around £800 at Key Music, plus free delivery. Ordered a vintage sunburst model this afternoon.

Alarmingly, he 'bought' this for £71.00:

...did his business on it and has it up for sale for £198.00 here:

The guy has more front than Brighton. And I should know. I've thrown up on it.
