z.vex's fat fuzz factory is gated, works with active basses (although seems to work 'better' for lack of better description of what it does when paired with passive ones) - but is one hell of a crazy fuzz; some say no facility to blend in the dry signal is no good for low end, definition, etc., but I love it for how unhinged and noisy it can get - or unhinged but quiet as the gate is really, really good.

G&L L2000 tribute.
Ticks every box. Monster bass.

Ditto - unbeatable price/quality instrument. -
A bit extreme but you could try EHX Freeze.

I love my Ibanez ES2 Echo Shifter - beautiful delay plus tons of crazy sounds you can get out of its oscillation, modulation, and whatever it is that it does. Size-wise it might not be the most pedalboard friendly delay unit out there but it looks very retro cool. Highly recommended!

I switch between playing a G&L L-2000 Tribute with Elixirs on, maple neck, and a Jazz with flats on, rosewood neck, through the Octamizer and I guess my comment is just to agree with the above - the cleaner and more 'carefully played' signal you give it the cleaner octa-beast sounds it produces. Definitely a smoother, 'synthier' sound from the Jazz with flats and a more aggressive, sort of even distorted growl from G&L with rounds.
You can do some tinkering with the balance of levels of octa and clean, and the filters - you can find a very sweet spot for any bass you play through it.
The tracking is not great as it is analogue but that is exactly why I LOVE it, how it seems a bit unstable, like an irritated, hungry bear. -
I can recommend the ProCo's Turbo Rat - can go from very subtle to stupidly loud and distrorted but very nicely compressed, and on subtler settings is very responsive to how hard you play, or how much volume/gain you set on your bass (like OCD I suppose).
ps. Turbo Rat ate my odb-3 for breakfast so got rid of it, and am sensing that yellow boss box is not getting much love round here, not surprised at all -
I have been scanning through various topics on basschat for some time now and it has recently become my go-to webpage to learn about different gear, read up expert opinions, and part-take in all the gear porn drooling - glad to see I am not alone
Time to make it official.
I've been playing bass for I reckon maybe last 15 years in various projects with friends - mostly jamming our troubled souls into an abyss of freak noise, psychedelia, and punk-funk bluesy nonsense. Keeps us sane I suppose.
I do not have any unique instruments or extravagant, hard to come by pedals but I will certainly share some thoughts on what I have (with pics, obviously!) later on in the relevant sections of the forum.
Stay cool!

PS. I shall explain later on the origin of my nick for this forum ...
