I'm certainly very intrigued to see any solutions to getting bands back gigging in pubs as I just don't see how we can until social distancing ends.

The idea of perspex screens seemed good, a complete screen across the front of the stage area, band behind screen and PA and crowd in front. We always all go through the PA anyway so it would be easy for us. The band members could agree to be a social bubble if they were all happy with what each other were doing to stay safe. It seems great, but then I remember that a small pub that has a hundred people in normally for a gig can only have 10 to 15 in with social distancing and I don't know any pubs that can or will pay a band to attract a crowd of ten. It's just not sustainable. I swing between hopelessly optimistic one day and then negative the next. I'm really intrigued to see how the first pubs tackle the situation.

Where musicians are concerned, it'll probably be duos to start with. Full bands won't be in until social distancing ends.

This is going slightly OT, but I don't see how small hospitality venues like pubs can effectively open up, even with social distancing - the loos are generally pretty small, and how are the pubs going to effectively manage punters who are "staggering" and likely to bump into people? 🤔

I wonder if that's been put in place while the country is still at level 4. If that's the case, then it's understandable as @Lozz196 said although I don't think any of us were expecting to get back to gigging as soon as July 4th comes round....

  3. I bought an XJ-1 5 string a couple of years ago. I've used it a ton since I bought it, and it's an excellent bass for the money - my custom Overwater 5 has hardly been out of its gig bag since!

I love playing gigs because of the synergy between band and audience - and I just can't see how that can be achieved through video link, as the audience are going to be a group of individuals all around the country, or further afield. No audience feedback means it's just a rehearsal to me. If that's the best we look forward to in the next few years (and hopefully it isn't), then I'll be selling up.

Agree with your comments there Dave, although I'm trying to remain hopeful that Covid-19 will eventually disappear (or an effective vaccine / drug treatment for it is found) so that we can all get back to playing gigs and doing rehearsals in enclosed spaces.

Ed Friedland (The Bass Whisperer), is a favourite of mine.

He is a pro bassist, who also writes books on how to play bass. His bass reviews are to the point and articulate.

He also tours and records with The Mavericks, a US Mexican/Americana type band.

This is a guy who knows how to write a great bass tuition book (like Stuart Clayton) - must have at least half a dozen of Ed's books 🙂

Big fan of Janek Gwizdalas stuff.

Adam Neely and Rick Beato as previously mentioned too.

+1 to these - Bass Man Jack's channel and Tom Kenrick's (Free Bass Transcriptions) are pretty good too. An additional "non bass related" is Aimee Nolte, a jazz pianist in California - does a lot of music theory based lessons like Rick Beato.

I do wonder how long this is going to go on for. Even if pubs and bars do open in July; something I’m actually rather sceptical about anyway tbh, but with social distancing still going to be in force, then I think the only live music will be outside.

That's the $64,000 question... I don't think any band is going to be back playing inside or outside a pub before the early part of next year (if we're lucky). We're 3 months into this still at level 4, and unfortunately level 3 seems a long way off, especially with the infamous 'R' rate just under 1 and daily mortality rates are still in (low) three figure numbers.

Not a good move if the authorities lift the closures on pubs and restaurants just yet (imo).

I briefly played an Overwater Jazz bass a couple of years ago. It had Bart pu's and an East pre and was one of the best sounding basses I've heard. It weighed over 11lbs and the other Overwater, which I didn't even bother to pick up, was over 12lbs.

If I played sitting down I'd already own several of these incredible basses, but I don't so owning one will remain an unfulfilled dream.

I tried out one of the Hybrids at an open day they held in Camden last year which was a lot lighter than mine (probably a Swamp Ash body) - they have Gotoh type tuners which also takes a little bit more weight off.

  9. I'm working on a few at the moment:

I'd Rather Go Blind - Etta James

Money's Too Tight to Mention - Simply Red

All Cried Out - Alison Moyet

The above three are for one of the covers bands I'm playing in (adding new numbers while in lockdown), next two are just for my own personal fun:

Back to the River - Susan Tedeschi

Waiting on the World to Change - John Mayer

  10. I've had this for the best part of 16 years now. The only thing I've upgraded on the bass since I bought it is the pre, which I replaced with an East J-Tone.

I would say they are underrated basses, but their profile (mainly for session and theatre pit work bassists) has come on leaps and bounds. The build quality is excellent, and if you want a more "Hi-Fi" or modern Jazz bass tone, that's what it does really well.

The only gripe I have about it is the weight but that's only because I'm not 40 anymore 😄, but I still wouldn't sell it. If you get a nice wide strap, it does ease some of the weight issue, but they will build a lighter bass if you want it.

That does indeed sound lovely and Im quite sure it would cut through in an acoustic situation but look at the size of the body. This is what I mean about double basses being big to project the sound.

I doubt it comes cheap either - the Balor Bass in the video is made out of Carbon Fibre and is ergonomically designed for comfort...

  12. I've got a Crafter 5 string acoustic bass which needs to be amplified when in the company of other acoustics guitars. The only acoustic bass guitars I'm aware of that might be able to hold their own in a truly acoustic situation are the ones made by Earthwood and Emerald Guitars in Ireland?

Just think how poor live music will be for the first few months lol.

I think when we're all allowed back in rehearsal rooms, demand will go through the roof. Thankfully both my outfits have block bookings in place, but doubt neither will go out until they're gig sharp...
