  1. Driving myself mad, looking at basses in the 2nd hand section. I have a budget of about £500 and started looking at first in my local shop, limited in choice since it's mostly Fender/Squier. Didn't like the laquered necks on some of the squiers (classic and VM). Did like the Fender PBass American special but at £845 out of the budget. So maybe I should be looking 2nd hand, main problem and don't have experience with 80% of the makes/models so need some advice. I have had: Fender Jazz MIM (around 2000) - liked neck and playability but sound wise a bit bland Yamaha BB5 - played easy, didn't like 5 string did sound crisp but a bit clinical So my shopping list at the moment says, classic styled, 4 string, passive bass. Sound: I grew up with G'n R, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Live and now like about anything out there from Modern Country, Rock, Indie etc. But overall more classic bass sound Playing style: I am a finger style, no plectrum, no slappig kind a guy. Amp: The bass will be played through a Genz Benz contour 210 Any advice which basses to look out for that I might not consider..... Thanks Dennis
  2. Only just joined myself so welcome Ed from a fellow newbie.... just wish my playing was as good as yours.
  3. Thanks for all the welcome messages. Yeah Fender is a bit of a standard, doesn't help the nearest shop is mostly Fender (Thame); haven't found anything in the 2nd market either so still on the look out. On the upside my Genz Benz contour 210 is on its way... just need something to plug into it.
  4. No problem with the comments 'hamfist' but I am not an expert on bass guitars and don't know the ins and outs of the older basses and smaller makes that have disappeared. So I don't mind these posts they give me something to look for. The only reason I mentioned the two I did was that I played them in my local shop. If I buy new I most likely buy from there if 2nd hand I will be looking on this forum.
  5. Ha Bert, Nee niet op het basgitaarforum.nl.... Ben al een tijdje weg uit NL dus dan kijk je ook niet naar de forums daar. Dus uit Rotjeknor, mijn eerste podium ervaring in Rotown..... Mazzel
  6. Been looking secondhand, bit picky. Not many precisions for sale. Only interested in passive. Lot's of out of budget stuff.... I will have another look tomorrow.
  7. Thanks for the info gents, I will have a think about removing the lacquer on a squier. I will also check out the Yamaha.
  8. Hi All, So here is the dilemma, I am looking for a new bass and I was initially going out to buy one of the Squier VM series. But the budget crept up a bit and I tried a Reverend Decision and that was great to play. One of the issues I had with the Squier was the thick lacquer on the neck, I cannot get on with it. It just sticks my fingers in place. Oh, what is hanging there a Fender American Special Pbass. Different sound but I was great to play. Problem > budget went from £350 to £650 for the decision and the Pbass is £845….. I am looking for a solid bass, I am not a slapping all out funk monster. Steady bass line, yes more my style.. Any other basses I should be looking at. 9. Hi All, Stumbled on your forum about a week ago so hello to all. Moved to the UK a while ago in 2006. Been away from bass guitar a while but missing it so going back to the old love. Used to play in a band 10+ yrs ago and have the urge to do so again. Must be a mid life crisis. Sold my gear ages ago, which I am not sad about my taste has changed. I never got on with the five string and the amp was a bit under-powered. At the moment no gear, I am ordering a Genz Benz Contour 210t once the shop gets back to me.. And still in deciding what bass to get, played a Reverend Decision and was impressed with that but also picked up an Fender Pbass American Special and that was lovely too. Will be checking out the used marked on the forum also. Cheers Dennis
