  1. I seem to remember Terence Trent D'Arby's bassist had a pink one way, way back, it always stuck in my mind.

Seeing Cass Lewis's pink bass turned me on to the Thumb body shape too - wasn't his actually a Spector though?

still, I was temped with it when it came up on eBay a while back.

  2. my NT 1990 thumb 5 has been my main bass for 15/16 years now - quite simply, no bass I've ever played comes close to the comfort, playability and sound variations of this bass - I can get pretty much any tone I want from a flat amp - beautiful bass. (and I've had a Ray, 59 P bass, Rick 4001 - still own a 64 P bass and a jazz V deluxe)
I have a de-fretted 1988 NT thumb 4 string too - with EMGs - very pokey and gets that pino growl and twang.

I wouldn't swap my NT 5 for any other bass - still GAS after an old Ray and a Wal - though I know I'lll always go back to the Thumb!

agree with NT v bolt on body shape, the bolt on isn't as nice to look at - plus the woods dont seem as figured.

you'll never regret having a Thumb - just get on a Fender after and wonder how you get at the post 15th frets!!!

  3. "Is there a data base to date the bass from the serial number?"

try on here for a rough guide:

nice looking bass and only 25 miles away - very tempting!!
    any part ex/trades?

  4. here goes:
    Avon ebo copy - 1st bass....rubbish!!
1959 Fender Precision - wish I'd kept this...
    1970s Rickenbacker 4001
    Columbus fretless Precision
    Hohner B2A fretless
    Hohner Jack Pro
Hohner Jack 5 string (which had jazz EMGs, not like the EMG select humbuckers on the 4 string - not as good.)
    Hartke bass
    MM Stingray
    Vintage ES96 MM copy

    current lot as in signature.

GASing for WAL 4 or 5 string, early pre EB MM Stingray, Stingray 5 string.

Does this bass have Suhr EQ/Pickups? Is it pretty much all original from when it was first bought?
By the way, I am in Worthing.

this looks identical to my 1996 5 string - which has the suhr PUs - they are single pole and are stacked humbuckers not single coils. great sounding bass.

  6. from my previous research (I have an identical twin of this bass):"1996 Fender American Deluxe V Jazz Bass Deluxe. Firstly, the double cutaway body is alder. 1995 - 1998 USA Deluxe Jazz Basses are the only ones to ever have the Ash - Alder - Ash sandwich body. this was augmented with gorgeous ash veneer on both the top and the back
Another fine feature is the fingerboard, only the Five String Deluxe has Pau Ferro wood.
The neck itself is maple with graphite reinforcement. The Five String Deluxe is stock with Gotoh tuners.

Another feature from this period is the John Suhr designed pickups that were only featured on Jazz Basses from 1995 to 1998. If I’m not mistaken I also believe Surh had a hand in designing the preamp in this Bass. It’s a 9volt, multi-band EQ with stacked knobs. All USA Fenders made during 1996 bore a Fender 50th anniversary emblem on the back of the headstock."

hope this answers some questions - awesome bass, I really like mine. Powerful sound.
    cheers,
    Mike

  7. really nice.

i was told - when hunting for mine circa 1992 - best ones were pre 1996/97.

I wouldn't trade my 1991 NT 5 Thumb for anything - my 1988 defretted NT4 has EMGs and it's hotter than the 5 string but the 5 is still THE one.

    I'd love another NT5 string from 1990/91/92.

    dont do it!!!

  8. unfashionable though they may be (at the moment) and having owned a Ray, a 1959 P-bass and still own a 1964 P-bass, my 1990 NT 5 string Thumb blows them all away -
I can get any tone I want from it and it'll never leave me whilst I draw breath - prob same goes for my 1988 NT 4 string -
dont bother with new ones (anything after 2003) go for a 80s/90s Thumb.
    nothing compares!!

PS: I dont do metal, Nu or anyway!!
