1.
Don't know, but someone in the business has told me they had a body/voice double lined up to do the lion's share of the work during the now cancelled concerts. Fanciful? Maybe....
Interesting that. Cause I always thought that the guy they paraded at the O2 to announce the gig wasn't Jacko. He looked too big, solid, vital, energetic and most of all had too deep a voice. (and his hands were too builder like too!)
 2. Thanks to everyone for your interest in this gig - which has now been taken. Thanks again Dave
 3. Hello all. One of the Fringe venues at Colne Blues Festival have asked me to sort out a band for them. It's Sunday afternoon - 2PM - 5PMish slot. It would suit bands in a rocky R&B vein - particularly anyone doing other fringe venues over the weekend. PM me if you're interested. Cheers Dave
 4. Saw her at Montreux Jazz Festival about 7 years ago. She's certainly a dynamic performer. I mainly went to that gig because it was in the (Smoke on the Water) Casino and it was the last gig in there before it was being closed and gutted for refurb. The energy of the gig really pulled me in though and by the end I loved it. Incidentally Ms Badu became increasingly less dressed as the gig progressed as a result of repeated and extensive crowd surfing. Sadly, though, she never made it up on to the balcony!
 5.
Please do...Have a good one!
+1 to that - I bet working in that kind of environment is a great experience!
 6.
I'll be at the Hop. Would your fellow Roosters , only really know a couple of them , be horrified if I did a number with the Triumph? Give you a good laugh if nothing else!!
Dunno Dave - we can but see on the night! Here's an idea... When we do 'Walk on the wild side' I'll do the slidy 10th(?) thing and you can do the double bass part! See you Thursday.
 7.
And mine came 2 days after you - we did the DocB/Elim show there on Sunday. We were told the B W gig wasn't well attended - is that true? I didn't like to doubt the word of the punters at the Yardbirds because most of them were the size of Chile. Nice on-stage sound for us - very loud out front I think. it was a good venue to do because of the folk that work there and the facilities we were provided with. The corner stage is a little restrictive though. I saw Buddy with John Mayall about 3 years ago. I now know who ate all the pies!! The bassist at the time being Hank Van Sickle. Very solid , understated player. Has his own website and myspace if anyone wants to look him up.
Hi Dave Yep the turn out for BW wasn't bad - not packed by any means - maybe 250 people? I found a seat no bother (which is important at my age for a whole nights enjoyment!) You're right though - you wouldn't want to argue with any of the folk there would you! Harry's Bar with The Roosters tonight if you're out - and we're doing an unplugged at The Hop on Thursday (and I'll have my upright out for the first time in a long time (for a few tracks only though!)). Dave
 8.
One of my favourite bassists. If I could choose a bassist to sound like Pete Stroud would be it.
Yeah I thought exactly the same on Friday - but I never will be in a month of Sundays!
 9.
I met Pete when I bought so some gear off of him through this site. If its the bass Im thinking of, he made it himself - no a bitsa either!
Yep - it certainly sounded stunning! Is Pete a basschatter?
 10.
Is this him. very brief shot i know.
yep - that's him. It's odd - I've seen the Splinter Group a couple of times and he never really stood out then. But Buddy was certainly giving him the freedom to do his 'thang' last night. (If indeed you can do 'thangs' in Grimsby. Oh by the way - the Yardbird - great intimate little venue too. My first visit there.
 11. I went to see Buddy Whittington last night at Yardbirds in Grimsby. The bass player was Pete Stroud - formerly of Peter Green's Splinter Group. I really enjoyed hearing him play last night. Very relaxed, effortless but somehow busy style. He had MarkBass gear - but I've no idea what his fretless bass was. Help me out someone if you know - it sounded great. And there seems to be little about him on google.
 12. It's about 30 mins or so for The Welsh T Band (inc simple lights). Thankfully the singer spends most of this time smoking or it might be longer! 45mins probably for The Roosters as that's a bit more complicated a set-up. I've a little 6K PA rig that I sound engineer the occaisional folk festival with - van to set-up and room rung-out time for that is about 2hrs 30mins singlehanded - well I use both MY hands but there's only me doing it! And I always think that set-up time is way too long!
 13.
What a gig, Norman was spot on and man, he sweats buckets. I watched the sweat start from the first number, by the end his jacket was soaked through and his trousers down to almost his knees. he needs to try that Lynx stuff! I'm not convinced he was playing through the TE stack as I could not see any cone movement at all.......? Other interesting facts: I first saw John Turnbull on guitar with Bell and Arc in Newcastle City Hall in the very early 70's. Last night he was playing a £200 Peavey guitar...just goes to show! Here's a couple of photos from my phone of NWR with his Bass Collection Jazz as described in the new rather glossy (controversial?) BGM! P.S. Grabbed the setlist at the end, how sad!
Great gig wasn't it! I just kept thinking I hope I'm still playing with that level of committment and enthusiam (and half the ability would do too!) when I'm Norman's age - which for me is possibly not too far away! Glad you made it Yorks5stringer - and good to say hi on the way in too. Anyone else get there? David
 14.
Ok, saw them last night in Basildon. I am not a hard core fan, never have been really, but feared that they wouldn't be worth watching without Ian Dury. How wrong can I have been, they were brilliant. Norman Watt Roy - respect! He's rather good.
Great to hear that Paul! I saw Norman with Wilko Johnson a couple of decades ago (I'd guess) and even through a drunken haze he seemed 'special'! Looking forward to Friday even more now!
 15. Just a mid week bump - for the West Yorks bass players who aint giging on Friday... (Oh yes - that would be me then! But I'm looking forward to a Norman Watt Roy experience!) The Sex Patels support. Be there - or in fact be somewhere else.
 16. Oh... by the way. If you're on Facebookers you can also pass this round... http://www.facebook.com/home.php?ref=home#...eid=87288407779 Ta
 17.
Finally an excuse to go back to Wakefield! Where is this place - Smythe Street? Is it in the old Unity House or something? Must go attempt to round up old mates... Just to be absolutely clear: This is The Blockheads, not "The Blackheads" or or "The Smackheads" or some other band pretending to be The Blockheads?
Hi thisnameistaken Yep it's the Blockheads. Check this... http://www.theblockheads.com/live.php You're in the right direction with Unity House (now that would be great venue again if it was re-furbed!) DNE is just down the hill from the front entrance of Unity House. Dave
 18. The Blockheads play the new DNE Venue in Wakefield this coming Friday. Tickets are advertised at an eye-watering £18 but the owner announced from the stage last Friday that everyone will get in for free. So if Norman Watt Roy's your thing (a proper bassplayer's bassplayer I think!) it's an opportunity not to be missed! The venue's worth a look too, close to Wakefield Westgate rail station, it's a great space with good PA and lighting system. Should develop into a great asset for the areas music scene. Check with the venue if you're travelling far. http://www.dne-music.com/ Dave
 19.
'The Hop' tonight isn't it? Saw your poster while I was warming the punters up for you last night!!
Cheers Dave! Good to see you tonight - yep it's been a busy weekend really with Blues Bar Friday, Pudsey yesterday, Blues Bar this aft with The Roosters and Hop tonight. The old one's worked well this weekend (although I do know why I wanted the E model - the old one always was more 'rock'n'roll' but it's a bit muddy soundwise)
Dad;'s a mechanic. you need somewhere that does TIG welding for aluminium. Stands for tungsten inert gas, basically you spray an inert gas over the tungsten welding tip, other than that its similar to arc welding.
Thanks for that bit of info Mr Foxen - I'll know I'm looking for now. Strangely I e-mailed GK last week to see what they suggested but haven't had a reply as yet. Odd for an American company really. I'll give 'em another day or two I think. Dave
 20.
John Illsley the bass player from Dire Straits was on Bob Harris last night talking about his new band. He's formed a band with a guy who was playing in a covers band - with a fabulous voice .... There's hope for us yet! Nice to see him back even it he was playing acoustic guitar ...
I heard them do Romeo and Juliet on the way home from last nights gig. You're right - a great voice indeed.
 21.
hey I just knew that was a Michael Jackson look-alike selling out 40 dates at the 02 Arena this week ....
Sorry for veering off topic, but... talking of M. Jackson... It's not him is it? [ (I can't believe I'm going to say this!) It doesn't look like Michael Jackson - he seems too well built and healthy to be Michael Jackson. And where did the high squeaky voice go? Whoever it was that did that press conference last week had a deep voice.
 22.
I had exactly the same problem. The repair shop couldn't weld it as they needed special equipment, so they closed the gap by using an L-shaped bracket
Hi Secret It is starting to look like a common problem - isn't it. Did yours repair up OK? - no rattles or vibrations after?
 23.
Just wondering , Dave - did this happen with your older microbass kit? I presume your talking about the Mk4 stuff you bought. Fixing - is it a weld? Folk buy small electric welding gear for DIY jobs so I can't imagine it's that expensive to have something welded (The MOT garage next to Kirkgate station welded a broken bracket off my boat engine for a fiver) and there's a fabricators place behind Trad Music. I suppose the issue might be that the heat would bubble the paint finish - not sure. I think that type of finish is called powder coating and I know you can get that done too - that salvager bloke off the cable channels had it done at a scrappers for a few quid. Whitwood Tec - 'project' for the students??
Hi Dave Yep it's the MB150E I got three years ago or so (its a mark iii version). And I got the extention cab that's gone at the same time - although I got another extention cab to replace. The older 'S' one I've got - which I'll be using again this weekend! - is contructed a bit more solidly (i.e. it's built like a tank!) - accountants at work I think between the two models! I seem to remember it was a bit more 'Rock&Roll' than the 'E') Yeah - I think it'll be a welding job - there's a car body shop just down the road from me who I might talk to about it. To be honest I don't care how it looks so long as the weld sorts it out!
I believe this is a know problem with the MB150 combo or extention cab. I've certainly seen ads for these where the seller had bought a replacement casings and was including the old one, which he had had welded. I used to own one myself and never had a problem
Hi Platypus. Yeah I have enjoyed using the GK stuff myself for about the last 10 years - great that gear so small can compete with a loud band - and it's attracted plenty of good comments about how my Warwick Thumbs sound through it. (Together with disbelief from lots of people that the sound was coming from such a compact set-up! But gear's got to work! (And upwards of 5 times a week for me!) I think I might have some fun e-mailing GK if it's a known problem with the gear - see what they'll do to help me out. Incidentally, I tried out a MarkBass Mini CMD 121P at Electro yesterday - similar in size to the GK. (If anyone's got one out there I'd love a report on its use in a band setting.) That might be where I junp to if the GKs don't repair successfully. Cheers Dave
 24. The welded/sealed metal speaker cabinets keep splitting on the seams! First it was the extention cab which I just replaced - but now the speaker enclosure in the amp/combo has split. And it just 'farts' endlessley now when I use it. Has any one else had this experience with Microbass gear? And does anyone know anywhere in the West Yorks area that would be able to repair this problem? And perhaps more to the point - van anyone suggest a different set up of about the same dimensions I could try (that'll compete with a couple of loud R&B bands!) Thanks for any help guys and gals David
 25.
+1 Met him when I was a sallow youth
Yep - me too! Just when I was starting playing - Blue Mink at the Batley Variety Club!
Poor bu553r. Still "Granddad" probably keeps him in Horlicks ...
Wasn't Herbie involved with the Tellytubbies too?
