I've now got a Ibanez GSR200 which is about to be defretted by my luthier but I need to decide on strings. Apparently my options are flatwound, tapewound or half round... but I am totally clueless with fretless strings as this'll be my first! Any assistance would be appreciated

Difficult as I can see it from both sides of the fence....

Maybe have an open honest chat with them about you concerns re the comments etc and go from there?

I've got a GK backline 600. I LOVE it, the sound is amazing and it handles my low B brilliantly combined with a hartke hydrive 1x15. Trouble is the loudness! I've yet to get it past the 2nd notch!! lol

I've got a Hartke Hydrive 1x15. I get so much bottom end I actually can't play it after about 8 at night as I'll upset the neighbours and my children who would be trying to sleep as it booms right through the house (and across the street!) even at low volume!
I love my cab. Got it from Pete Academy's shop. Can't recommend hartke enough!!

I've got Fender's on mine at the mo. Have also used Ernie Ball slinky's without a problem.

I love the initial 'new bass' feeling but it takes me a bit of playing before I properly fall in love with a bass.

My guitard boyfriend does this. He picks up my bass and plays it for 5 mins before moaning that his fingers are hurting.

This is why I have (currently) 1 bass. My 5er. However I *like* to have one for every job, so am about to get a 4 string fretless, and in the future am planning on getting a 4 string for slap, as although I can (kind of lol) slap on my 5, the string spacing is very narrow so it's hard going.

Ibanza? Is that an 'off the back of a lorry' ibanez?

I don't mind 4 or 5 string really. I think for a starter a 4 string would be better then once I've got the grasp of that would go on to a fretless 5...

Got my RGT grade 4 exam soon. Apparently they give 2-3 weeks notice and it's 'sometime in june/july' so not long now

Budget is cheap as possible as I'm saving for a new car!! lol

I was looking at those actually.. they any good?

After speaking to my luthier and mentioning my GAS for a fretless he's recommended getting an Ibanez (fretted) as the build quality is decent, and taking it to him to be fretted as it'd work out a fraction of the cost, plus the choice of fretless basses out there is more limited. I've been eyeing up ibanez basses for a while so him saying that has only compounded my GAS.
My question is can anyone recommend one? Would the SRs be ok to defret? I've no experience of defretting myself so not sure if there's anything in particular you need to be aware of...

Would be so tempted if you weren't so far away
