  1. Out of the two OP options, I would definitely go for a MV. Despite my preference for nitro, big reverse tuners etc. Current Moollon prices combined with the wait times just launch this out of a reasonable P-bass land. I have no doubt they're great, but once a good seasoned wood has been nicely sprayed and screwed together skillfully, good pickup tidily soldered in with high quality pots and socket, cavities shielded, fretwork perfected, proper hardware bolted on etc, just how much better can a P bass get with additional £k's and/or years of waiting?

They look like they might be Limelight equivalents?

Not a pretty decal headstock decal is all....if they fixed that....

    Si

Might be - I've never seen a Limelight in person, but they look/sound nice here and on youtube. One difference is that Mateusz at RG will only use a Fender logo if it's a Fender being refinished (which he does a lot with MIJ). I do agree about the Buzz logo. Also, the sheer range of possible finish options is unmatched in a basically one-man operation (poly, nitro, paisley, sparkle, no upcharge relic jobs). Top class parts, shielding/soldering and fretwork. First ever new bass I didn't feel compelled to file the nut down anymore.

PS. I am in a honeymoon mind you

I especially liked the neck / pick at 1'43". But I would.

I also came across a demo of the SB-75 which started with a style conscientious youtube demos don't normally include:

That's the guy who built my P, and he respects those old Yamahas greatly. I think he has a BB VI in stock just now.

  4. This bass still surprises me a little bit every time I pick it up, how good it is. I've always been of an opinion that a P-bass is a P-bass is a P-bass, and I still am, but despite the somewhat understated looks, every little part on this is top quality, and then it's all put together really well.

The only option I would have liked was maybe a quarter-sawn, or flamed or roasted (or all at once) neck wood. Mateusz gets bodies and necks CNCd in bulk for him in Japan, and the choices are: P, PJ, '51P or J body in alder or Ash, and maple/maple or maple/rosewood with either dots or blocks/binding in either P or J nut width. I've had a 2010 MiM, 1990s mij, 2010 Am Std and most recently a 2013 Nate Mendel when it comes to precision, plus a few cheapie, out of which the red-is Vintage V4 pictured in the background above I've kept and love dearly; this Buzz is the best of the bunch and I didn't pay for it much more than I sold the Mendel for.

That's some nice-looking tortoiseshell - it's got some depth to it. Can I ask where you got the scratchplate from?

Thanks, it's called Montreux and my builder gets them from Japan I believe. It is indeed proper translucent celluloid with a bit of the 3D thing going on in good light. It was fairly direct evening light on the photos, in most conditions it looks much darker.

  6. I took a gamble recently with specifying a DiMarzio model P for a P-bass build, mostly based on looks, and so far I love it. It has a bit of a reputation for being dark, but I disagree. It may have a bit less super high freq chime, but it's plenty clear, very focused and somewhat aggressive. I've yet to try it with flats, but so far with rounds it's my fav.
