  1. I started a subscription at The Bass Show in Birmingham and have yet to receive a single copy either in print or digitally - I have messaged Dan Edwin a number of times and he says it will get sorted but still no magazines at all.

I paid on credit card so will hopefully get a refund but it is truly shocking customer service, never seen anything so bad.

  2. I bought this last year for a few shows that I needed it for.

Now surplus to requirement and ready for a new owner!

Amazing bass for the money, massive tone and lovely rolled edge neck too. The P5R has the newer pick ups in and sounds wonderful.

I do still have the box that it shipped in but would prefer collection from Cheltenham.

    NO TRADES PLEASE!

  3. I’ve decided to move on this wonderful jazz bass that I had built for me in 2017 via Danny at Bass Japan Direct.

Top notch bass built to an amazingly high standard which is why they are used by the likes of Jerry Barnes of Chic and Francis Hylton from Incognito - I’d say comparable to Sadowsky and better than Fender!

It comes with branded gig bag, all paperwork and the cleaning cloth.

As you can see from the build card it is spec’d with 70’s pick up spacing, the EQ-M preamp and 70’s wound pick ups. The only mod that I have made is to add a tone control for when the bass is in passive mode as for some reason they don’t have one when they build the basses which I think is a little odd. So controls are now, neck pick up vol, bridge pick up vol, stacked bass and treble and then passive tone control and this gives you the option for so many great tones.

18mm  string spacing and 9.8lbs in weight.

The bass has been gigged a lot but is in great condition as I look after my gear.

I’ve tried to catch the vibe of the bass with the pics and video

    NO TRADES PLEASE!

  4. Decided to put this wonderful cab up for sale as it is simply not getting enough use.

This is the 1200w, 4 Ohm version, super loud with a good natural clarity and massive bottom end. Also has the Vanerkley branded protective cover.

Collection from near Cheltenham in Glos preferred but I do travel nationwide for gigs and could also ship if needed to.

Bet you it's some imperial/freedom units size...

Since posting I have found out that it is 1/16" which converts to rought 1.5mm but a 1.5mm key doesn't fit (not sure why) a builder friend had a set of imperial sized keys and yes 1/16" fits absolutely perfectly.

Why they can't use a universal size for all bridges I don't understand!

  6. Hello,

I have a number of basses and thought I had allen keys to fit all of the bridges and adjust string height but I can't seem to find on that fits an American Professional Fender Precision can anyone help with correct size and link to buy from please?

Just bought a multi-one from Screwfix and none fit the Fender yet they fit other basses I have.

    Bloody annoying!

Thanks for sharing what you noticed about the condition. I’ll be keeping an eye out for when some of these instruments come back up for sale and having a general sense about the condition will be helpful.

Thanks also for sharing the final auction price. The curiosity got the better of me so I subscribed to the Price Guide. It’s seems that the final sale price for all seven of the Larkins were between £600-£750.

In my twenty years of searching for used instruments, those are some the biggest bargains I’ve ever seen. Whoever did manage to get one got an incredibly special instrument for a fraction of its actual value.

I notice that someone who bought the Larkin EUB at the auction for £700 is now listing it on eBay for £3500. I think that is a little optimistic but shows how undervalued these instruments were at auction!

No problem at all. I have to say I was blissfully ignorant about these basses otherwise I may well have tried to buy one of them.

I was amazed what that jazz bass went to which had a 70’s neck badly put on to it and also the Stingray - madness!

I’ve just come across this thread now. Always sad to learn about any passing.

Whilst some of the listings were over valued, some were significantly undervalued.

Del had a long relationship with the luthier Chris Larkin and five of Chris’ instruments were included in that auction, including some truly one off custom pieces made just for Del by Chris Larkin.

I would have valued those Chris Larkin instruments at £1k-£2k per item with the lower valuation being very very conservative.

The auction value was an average of £300-£500.

I think that’s a bit worrying for the family if the auction house was putting those kind of valuations on instruments of that quality.

Does anyone have access to the final selling price for the Chris Larkins? I may subscribe to the Price Guide just to find out but thought I’d ask here beforehand.

I really hope for the family that any of the Larkins went for at least £1k

I managed to find one of the Larkin basses as I must have been watching it. See image for hammer price.

I know the time has passed but do you recall seeing some of the Chris Larkin instruments and what the condition was? These would have been the most valuable instruments of the whole auction.

They were not in great condition - one of the basses only had 1 string on it!

Do you know what any of the lot numbers were for the Larkin stuff? As I bid on some items I can see what the final price was for them but need the relevant lot number to find out the sale price.

I watched this auction when it popped up on my auction watch on iBidder. A few things looked interesting and I considered the PJB but it Al rushed off to more than I wanted to pay, particularly bearing in mind the additions for buyers fees.

I was amazed what price some the things went for!

A man who was in a very enviable position. It was a real shame when he passed. I wonder if they sold that bass that Kate was holding in the famous photo.

    I expect so.

It's always hard to tell from these things whether at the end he had bugger all left - you can also never tell what money he personally made from the Kate Bush stuff - if she had all the song writing credits then I suspect not much at all.

I remember him selling certainly one, possibly two, of his basses via Bass Direct. If I could remember exactly when it was I might be able to find the material on the WayBackMachine; it doesn't feel like too long ago, but it could have been about 4 years; time seems to fly by... There was a photo of him holding the bass, and a signed declaration of his ownership. The one bass that I defintiely remember was a Gibson used on many Kate Bush recordings. I can't remember the exact asking price, but I'm sure that it was a pretty tidy amount.

That would make a lot of sense, I’ll ask Mark and see if he remembers. The Bass Gallery has quite a few John Giblin basses for sale at the moment. Some nice basses from an amazing player but they aren’t cheap!

  13. As I play in a Kate Bush tribute band I was naturally very interested in this auction. I went to the viewing last week and was very surprised at the state of some of this equipment to be honest and I do think that as someone else has stated anything of real value has been kept to one side.

I did express concern to one of the auctioneer directors that the lot descriptions were misleading. It was not obvious in the listing that the Stingray was a Sub, you had to look very closely in the pics to see that. Also the cream Fender jazz was a 2012 body with a 70’s neck badly put on to it. Again that was not clear and someone bid over £1k for it!

Lastly there was a Wilcox Lightwave Sabre fretless that had a few issues and that went for £1,740 plus fees which seemed a huge amount for a fairly nasty instrument but I guess it has some heritage!

It’s amazing what some folk will spend on.

My Radial Tonebone preamp pedal (not using backline) sends a DI to PA/FOH, with the preamp pedal main out to 'Inst in' on Rolls.  I get an Aux send from the PA back to the 'Line in' which I have the rest of the band (no bass as I have control of that on the 'Inst in').  The 'Mic in' is for use as an ambient mic feed but this isn't always needed or is likely sacrificed if it is a bish/bosh turn around.

I use a Radial TB too, but would still have to run backline as rest of the band are not on IEM’s yet. So, if I use DI from amp head to FOH and DI from TB into my Porter & Davies board/amp could I run the main jack output from the TB into the jack input of the Rolls and then take the jack  output from the Rolls to the jack input on my amp?

Exactly how I have it set up (+/- ambient mic as needed).  Some might consider it an unnecessary link in the chain but it gives 'me' absolute control of what I hear without being tied to what the rest of the band want/get from an Aux feed from PA/engineer.  I did a gig recently where (despite sending a tech spec) I turned up to find the PA/engineer couldn't give me the feed I needed in the time constraints; with the PM351 I at least had a work around.  I can either take a cable to my IE (I use a thin phono type lead on a 5m run) or plug my Lekato wireless into the headphone output: as the Rolls is on my pedalboard it is literally at my feet so no worries with signal over distance/obstacles etc.

Makes total sense to me. We use the ME-1 in one band and that is brilliant and I have nothing but great things to say about it but in the other band we are playing different venues with different soundcrew all the time and the wedge mix can be with excellent or terrible. I'd prefer to try and control a bit more myself. Do you just run DI out from amp or pedalboard into one input, FOH mix into another and then ambient mic into the 3rd?

The guitarist who does sound in our band has never understood why I take one feed straight from my preamp pedal into my Rolls PM351 and take an Aux from the desk for the rest of the band... it hasn't happened yet but on the day my feed from the desk goes shonky, I'll still have a nice bass signal.  :)

I've been looking at the Rolls PM351 for a while and thinking that it would make a very easy IEM system. Your own bass signal in one channel, rest of the band on another channel and then a mic to pic up ambient noise which you can dial up and down as needed like I do when I can use my ME-1 with one of my bands. Does it work well like this?

  17. I owned an MTD Kingston Z fretless - https://www.bassdirect.co.uk/product/mtd-kingston-z5-maple-board-natural-gloss/

and had the preamp changed out for Bartolini and the pickups upgraded to Aguilar DCB D2’s.

I sold the bass a while ago and still have these in my cupboard and no use for them. If anyone wants them and can use them then they can have them - all I’d like is the postage costs to be covered.
