    I do actually mean very flat rather than actually completely flat. About 1mm relief across the full length of the neck. I think it's actually the nut that needs sorting to get the action down to where I want it rather than just a case of lowering the saddles but I'd rather let a pro do that in case I make a mess of it. For now though i'm just happy to have it sounding good and once the set up is right it should just make it feel that much easier to play :)

    It's more this choking of the fretted notes that I was referring to. When I was chatting to our guitarist afterwards about the difference it had made I described it as being like dead frets across the whole neck (I have the neck set very flat so it was the same everywhere).

  3. Before last night's gig I decided to try lowering the action on my bass a little by dropping the saddle height by one full turn - a fairly subtle change in the action but it felt pretty good so off I went to my gig.
    When I started playing in the soundcheck though, I thought there was something wrong with my amp. No bottom end and the bass was completely lost in the mix even with the volume cranked way higher than I'd normally have it. After checking every connection and setting was where it should be with no joy, our lead guitarist asked if there was anything at all I'd changed since the last gig. With everything else I could think of eliminated as the cause, I wound the saddles up again to where they had been and BOOM! It was like an earthquake (I still had the volume cranked up on my amp).
    Has anyone else ever noticed a really drastic difference in tone from a small change to their set up?

  4. HUGE PRICE DROP FOR QUICK SALE - WAS £480, NOW JUST £380!

    I have for sale here my fantastic Cort Artisan A6 6 string active bass.

    This would need to be collection from Fakenham in Norfolk as I do not have a spare hardcase to send it in although delivery within a reasonable distance for cost of petrol could possibly be negotiated too.

    The build quality, playability and sound of this bass really are exceptional and it genuinely holds its own against other basses I have owned costing thousands of pounds.
    Recently though I have discovered the joy of passive P-basses and am looking to get some money together for a Squire VM Precision V but also need to raise some money to go towards the cost of my wedding later this year - in other words I need to keep my other half sweet too!

    As far as trades go I would need to see some cash coming my way but would obviously be interested ideally in a VM Precision 5 string (preferably sunburst or Olympic white) but would also consider a VM Jazz 5 string in Olly white - both with cash my way. Would also consider a Fender modern player Jazz 5 string with a little bit less cash my way. Anything else you have though doesn't hurt to ask.

    As you can see I have made some purely cosmetic and fully reversible changes using adhesive vinyl which I can easily remove for you when you collect if you would like it back to original (rosewood fingerboard, black plastic pickup covers and truss rod cover).
    Condition is basically very good but just a few things to mention. There are some spots on the top of the control knobs and there is a light wear mark on the body above the neck pickup where my thumb has rested (both pictured). There is also a little rust on a couple of the screws on the bridge.

    Specs:
    Neck thru construction - 5 piece maple and wenge with dual truss rods.
    Rosewood fingerboard with offset mother of pearl dot markers.
    Mahogany body wings with flamed maple top.
    Natural open pore finish.
    Satin finish Hipshot licenced bridge and ultra lightweight tuners.
    Bartolini Mk1 switchable 3 band active preamp and matching twin humbucking soapbar pickups.
    I do have a Warwick padded gigbag which I can also include depending on your offer.

    I've also included a stock photo of the bass to show it as it would appear again if the modifications were reversed.

  5. I recently listened to Cliff Burton's solo'd bass track from Master of Puppets on YouTube recently and it was full of clanks and clunks, fret Buzz and string scrapes none of which could be heard in the mix. Listened to Jason Newsted's part from Enter Sandman and same thing again.
    Both players which I think are generally fairly well thought of in their field (I know it's not motown by any means), but when I heard them out of the mix I thought the playing sounded really sloppy.
    In the mix though it sounds great and that's where the punters will hear you too so I wouldn't worry overly. Although practicing clean playing is obviously no bad thing either.

  6. I'm trying to upload some photos to an advert which I'm trying to put up in the for sale section but next to the uploader it says I've used 30.26MB of my 30MB global upload quota!
    How can I get some photos into my advert? looking for a quick fix as I've already gone through the long process of writing it up and really don't want to have to write it out again especially as I'm doing this on my smartphone!

    I learnt that:
    After nearly 20 years of saying I didn't like Precisions based on looks, feel or sound, P basses are in fact the perfect bass for me based on looks, feel and sound!
    You can get a genuinely decent giggable bass for under £100 new.
    I really like playing Sixers but not enough to stop me putting my Cort A6 up for sale on eBay to fund my GAS for a Squier VM P5.

    It is now sadly (although I do still quite like the look of the 2t). The current model has 4 knobs - VVT & 4 way selector - with the Jack socket moved to the side so I'd say this is the previous model.

    I'm quite interested in the modern player jazz mainly because of the versatility of the different pickup configurations. I really like the idea of covering the 3 main food groups (precision / jazz / stingray) with just a couple of basses. I have the p bass covered and I'm guessing this should do the standard jazz sound with both coils tapped but is it possible to get anywhere near at all to a stingray tone with the bridge humbucker solo'd?

    Pretty much spot on I'd say. Personally I prefer the versatility of 2 pickups on my toilet seats in any case so based on that I think I'll leave this to someone else.

    Well that's me sold on the Squire then. Just need to sell my Cort now.

    I must admit I can't understand how the HB was so cheap myself either. I remember when a mate of mine was looking for a bass about 18 years ago and the cheapest he could find new was a Rockwood for £130 and that was utter garbage!

    Very true and for what it's worth the balance is perfect. Not even a hint of neckdive and I was a bit concerned that there might be having played basses with smaller paddle headstocks previously.

  13. Funnily enough it was the VM P5 that I would have gone for if I'd had a few more pennies spare but given that a P bass was a complete u-turn on my thinking about basses over the last 19 years it was a bit of a gamble anyway.
    Having now played this at last night's gig through my Ampeg rig I have to say it's a gamble that's well and truly payed off. So much so that I'm now thinking of selling my Cort and buying the Squire (Mmmmm - Olly white, dark brown tort guard and maple board).
    What do you make of the VM P5 then?
