Total Watts

1. The only time I've used glass fibre resin, it turned out pink. I'd try it on some scrap wood first to see what it looks like.
2. I'll learn the notes for a cover song, but play them with my own "feel". I've just learnt I Want You Back by the Jackson 5. The original bass part is fairly stacatto, but I play it with a bit more "flow" between the notes. As long as what you're doing suits the song, I don't think it matters if your own personality comes through. If it's for a tribute band though, I think it'd have to be spot on to the original as much as possible.
3.
Jazz fans will be wanting at least VVT controls. No pick-up selector switches.. Probably the main reason I've never bought any of them.
I'm not too fond of the selector switch either. If I had one I'd ditch the switch and put another volume pot in. I have a BB614 and use the blend pot quite a bit, it's useful if you can vary between the pickups.
4.
They used to do a cracking active Jazz Bass style instrument , the BB1500a , but it was discontinued a few years ago now . One of these :
Your link doesn't work for me, but found some pics on google. Looks quite nice that does. https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=BB1500a&safe=off&client=firefox-a&hs=WXy&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&channel=rcs&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=7SqRUdr-L4yb0AXHkYGIAg&ved=0CAoQ_AUoAQ&biw=1280&bih=626
5. Interesting replies, very informative thanks. Wonder if Yamaha will ever do a JJ version as well as the PJ configuration? It might win over some Jazz bass fans. Cheers Garry
6. What's the difference between the model ranges? The 2024 is twice the price of the 1024, which itself is twice the price of the 424. As far as I can tell they all have similar specs for materials, so apart from the 2024 being handmade what's the real difference between them? Cheers Garry
7. Thanks for the answers. I wasn't too sure about all the effects on the Roland as I'm basically a '70s thudder, but it might make me expand out a bit more soundwise. I've got a Roland/Boss micro BR recorder which is still going strong, so I'll go with the Roland when I get the tax refund through. Cheers Garry
8. I've been looking at various practise combos and have shortlisted Apeg BA108, Ashdown After Eight, and Roland Bass Cube 8". The Roland is quite a bit dearer than the other two, so what do you get for the extra money? Is it for all the various effects or is the build quality better as well? I don't mind paying extra for better quality, if that's the case. Cheers.
9. Made in the days when Peavey amps were nice to look at.
10. You're The One That I Want from Grease. It's only taken me 35 years to getting around to having a go at it!
11. Watts and Wyman - really tight together. I think Wyman's "muddy" sound suited The Stones better than something more upfront. Neil Smith and Dennis Dunaway from early '70s Alice Cooper. One of the few bands where I'd listen to each member individually. Chris Franz and Tina Weymouth from Talking Heads. Warning Sign's my favourite, one of their simpler songs. Plus any drum/bass pair that Bowie used in the '70s.
12. I'll be in Rugeley on Sunday morning, and can come over to pick it up then if that's convenient for you. Send me a message with some contact details if Sunday is ok for you. Cheers
13. Cheers Dannybouy, I've found an official Yamaha repair centre so I'll send them an email.
14. Does anyone know if the newer 5 piece laminated BB necks would fit on a 6 year old BB 614 ok? I'm toying with the idea of converting my current neck to fretless, and getting the new neck so I can change between them. I really like the look of the 5 piece neck anyway! Cheers
