I did the neck on my last build with Tru oil and really like the feel - sort of organic somehow without being sticky - nice to hear that the body came out good.  I think a little texture is a good thing!

Well, actually as it turns out, the only part of the neck which remains as being 'raw' Tru-Oil is the back of the neck.

I had done the full fingerboard, neck and headstock with Tru-Oil, but to be honest, the more coats I added to the fingerboard, there was a 'guminess' to it at the frets, it looked messy, had a build of fibres from the cloth I had used (novice mistake, I didn't invest in 100% lint free!) so I ended up sanding it down and coating using a clear Nitro.

Similar with the headstock, the Rothko and Frost decal I bought for it, the instructions specifically stated that they don't work with Tru-Oil, so I then had to Nitro both the front and rear of the headstock to apply it.

There's a line literally behind the nut on the rear of the neck where the Nitro stops and the Tru-Oil remains...would need CSI to find it though if you didn't know it was there!!

Sweet build!  How does the Tru oil feel on the body?

It's sooooo smooth, like glass almost.

When I hold it up to the light, you can see that the grain hasn't 100% filled, but I'd honestly say we're talking higher than 95% filled though, as in that you can see the faintest of grain still showing, it is there ever so slightly, but you certainly can't feel it as it's so polished and smooth...so chuffed with it.

Played it for a full rehearsal last night and honestly the sound coming from that Lindy Fralin split single coil just makes me smile so much, was cutting through effortlessly...I thought my 2011 US P had warm, punchy pick-ups, but this is next level.

Making a minor tweak already, about to buy a Hipshot Bass Xtender to allow me to drop to D more easily, couple of we've only started doing since I starting this build that I need it for.

  3. A day late with this, but we had an absolute belter of an afternoon on Saturday playing at The Spree festival in Paisley in the Spielgeltent to over 400 people...we played the last slot between 4.00pm and 5.00pm when everyone was suitably watered, so it got a bit lively and dancey...!

Set list was: "I Can't Explain"; "Substitute"; "The Kids Are Alright"; "I Can See For Miles"; "Baba O'Riley"; "5:15"; "Amazing Journey"; "Sparks"; "Pinball Wizard"; "See Me, Feel Me"; "Behind Blue Eyes"; "Won't Get Fooled Again"; and "My Generation".

  4. New (build) bass day.

So I finally finished my build, so its happy new bass day to me. I wanted a modern take on a 1954 Precision, a la Mike Lull's 54P...so I made one at less than half the price.

Tried it out last night at rehearsal and that Lindy Fralin pup is dynamite.

There's a thread in the build diaries forum if anyone's interested in reading more.

    The spec was:

    • Allparts Replacement neck for Tele-Bass - sold maple - no finish
    • Lindy Fralin '51 P Bass, Split Single Coil
    • Stellertone, Tonestyler Bass Ten
    • Hipshot Ultralite Y Tuners, Shiny Chrome, 1/2" / 13mm
    • Hipshot B-Style Bridge, Aluminium, Chrome, 19mm spacing – FM2 American Deluxe String Thru

    • Hipshot String Tree, Chrome

  5. Finished...thumb rest and string tree now in position...👍...

Very, very, very happy with it...only teeny, tiny gripe is that I would think more about the positioning of the decal in future, try set it parallel to the string line...

Had use a nickel jack socket plate as the chrome one I had was too small, so may change that over too at some point...

Ran through a few songs at rehearsal last night, man that Lindy Fralin pup is HOT...

  6. Nearly there...

Just picked up from Strung Out Guitars in Glasgow, who have fitted the neck, new bone nut, shielded the cavities and wired up all the electrics...

Minor buzz on the E string above the 12th fret which they reckon might dissapate once the neck settles, if not it might need some additional fret redressing later...

Still to fit the string tree and thumb rest, which I'm going for the functional option of above the E string along the line of the neck, rather than the aesthetically more common / traditional placement...

Sounds great running through the shops wee practice amp, full run through at rehearsal tonight...👍😎👍

Mine should be here any day now. It was ready at the beginning of August but Mark accidently put a lined board on it :laugh1: So I'm just waiting for it to have the unlined neck fitted. Hopefully any day now. This is the picture of it with the wrong neck on,

Pardon me if I'm being a muppet asking this, but what is with the holes between the neck pick up and the bridge?

I had tucked the idea of bronze tuners away for my eventual build in a few years. I'll have forgotten by then, so it doesn't matter either way 😁

Get on it, I've really enjoyed putting this together...I can't really call it a self 'build' as such, more a self 'finish and fit', but I've had fun doing it and the learning process itself for things like the tru-oil sanding, placing and finishing the decal etc., has been worth it...I'm certainly not rushing into it, but I wouldn't discount another being done within the next year or so...👍

  9. That's all hardware drilled and fitted now...I'm leaving the thumb rest off for now until I get it playable and I'll look to fit in a comfortable position then.

I decided though, I know it's supposed to be a self-build, but I neither have the tools, knowledge, nor confidence to tackle both the alignment and fitting of the neck and the electrics without making a complete balls-up of it, so I'm taking it into Strung Out Guitars in Glasgow this week to get that done professionally...oh, a new bone nut fitted too.

I just figured, I've investeda lot of time and money getting to this point, it really would be pretty foolish to try something myself I'm not entirely comfortable with and take a high risk I'd totally pink torpedo it up...!!

  10. Ohhh, very sparkly...and very blue...don't see these around much...but very coincidentally just after reading this thread, I then go onto Strung Out Guitars website and see there's once for sale there too...I've never actually seen one in the flesh, but I have a need to visit Strung Out later this week, so hope to have a wee gander...

  11. I'm 45 and I've got to a stage in my life where I feel like I own (1,500+ Cd's, not vinyl, sorry!) and know all the music I need to see myself happy for the rest of my days. Well...I did...until I read posts on Basschat recommending new tunes.

We might all agree, or more likely disagree, on here but the one thing I think we probably all take away is a knowledge of new music.

Basschat makes me want to (a) listen to music I love and have otherwise forgotten about; and (b) seek out new music to check out from other posters suggestions, comments and Recommendations.

Please fire away with your current selections...👍

  12. It's the 25th Anniversary of Monster this year...I love that album.

Regurgitating the thread slightly and appreciate where the OP is coming from, however, I would argue Leaving New York is a great album...drastically different to those before very morose, and I'd suggest the band themselves probably realised they'd peaked and reached their shelf life.

But their later albums would still wipe the floor with half the stinky poo coming out today.

My favourite R.E.M. song of all time has to be Country Feedback.

  13. So...after a FIVE month wait on Bass Direct to get my order to me...it eventually arrived on Thursday...!!

    Time for a mock-up...

The pup is a bit tight for the routing as is, might need to try file the tiniest wee bit away from the pup base, but shouldn't interfere with the fixing holes...

Very happy with it the way it looks...however, my playing style, I generally play tight to the neck most of the time, I rest my thumb just on the thickness of the pickguard...so I'm thinking, do I go with head over heart and reposition the thumb rest to be practical rather than aesthetically pleasing...?! 🤔
