  1. Just reading through other people's experiences, looks like I've been luckier than most. Over the past five years, I've been in a number of false-starts which never went anywhere. Then a local bunch, who've all been in umpteen bands before and most recently were playing as an electro-acoustic trio + drum machine, advertised for a percussionist to fill out their sound once things kicked off again post-lockdown. Having found a suitable candidate, they then decided to go down the full rhythm section route so added a bass player they knew from a previous band. Sadly, said bass player fell seriously ill and passed away in a matter of weeks, but the drummer knew me from one of my previous false-starts so put my name forward, and the rest is history. So far we've managed a few rehearsals including a bit of recording, and things are going well. Unfortunately the festival at which we were scheduled to make our debut got cancelled, and the only gig we've got booked so far isn't until March 2022, but hey-ho. At least we're having fun getting a couple of sets of country-blues-rock covers together. Best bit is, the drummer has converted an old chicken shed into a tidy rehearsal studio, so we're fully self-contained and independent of any other facilities and the associated costs etc. Now, if we could just get the timing of the break-down in "Guitar Town" sorted...  🤪

  2. Reckon the original ad will be long gone now as it was back in 2008 when I first joined BC, but my persistent nightmare is the Fender Japan '65 Jazz Reissue, Oly White with matching headstock, tort guard, dot and bound neck, which IIRC was being sold by somebody in Scotland, asking price £450. I really should have bought it, and to this day regret not doing so... 😭

That throw is a keeper too. Getting a Fabulous Thunderbirds vibe off the pair of them 👍

Haha, sadly the Keith Ferguson Tribute Throw went to the Great Home Furnisher in The Sky a few years ago...  😞

Wow, 1916 is one of my favourite albums. The title track  is just amazing.

Yeah, can't explain why, but it just didn't do it for me. 🤷‍♂️ Might have to revisit it I guess...

The Three Amigos were the only Motorhead lineup for me. I saw them 3 or 4 times from 1980 up to and including Iron Fist. Think I saw them twice at Leeds. Fantastic every time, loved them so much back then. Can’t believe none of them are with us any more, seems impossible.

I'm one of those weirdos who actually likes "Another Perfect Day" (saw the Robbo line-up just the once, at Preston Guildhall), and ultimately stuck with 'em through every album and tour up to "Rock 'n Roll". "1916" just didn't do it for me ("Going To Brazil" aside), and that was the end of my Motorhead obsession. But yeah, hard to believe the "Originals" are all gone (plus Wurzel, of course).

That’s the first time I’ve seen a recording featuring Dragster. They played at the Motorheadbangers party (Iron Fist release?) at the Ritz in Manchester - anyone remember the date? Loudest band I ever saw, and that includes Motorhead (several times). Bass player played a TBird - ‘60s IIRC - fingerstyle I think through I think an Orange head. He sounded immense.

A lot of the other bands used to play at the Norbreck Nightspot back in the day.

My distinct memories of the Norbreck include Def Leppard, Saxon, Iron Maiden (with Di'Anno), Samson, Angelwitch, Witchfynde, Vardis, Magnum, Tygers of Pan Tang, Girlschool, White Spirit, Praying Mantis, Mythra, and Law (aka Blizzard of Ozz's not-so-secret warm-up gig), but I'm sure there must have been umpteen more whose names are now lost in the mists of time and my memory. I somehow missed seeing Budgie, Diamond Head and Limelight there, though did see Limelight at JR's (supported by local band Stallion IIRC).

    Happy days...

  7. As far as I'm aware, the Sonic Blue + white scratchplate version of the Classic Vibe 60s Precision appeared first, and had the bridge cover fitted as standard. This was followed by the Fiesta Red + tort version, which didn't come with a bridge cover. I really fancied a Sonic Blue one, but by the time I'd decided to get one, none were available new, and everybody who had one wasn't selling them - I eventually picked up a 2010 Fiesta Red one on here, not my first choice of colour admittedly but with the added bonus of a Wizard Thumper pickup, which had been completely unmentioned in the ad! 😁

The original Sonic Blue and Fiesta Red models were both made in China - I believe the later Oly White and 3TS versions were made in Indonesia rather than China, no idea how they match up against the "originals".

  8. May be of interest to any Spacemen3 / Spiritualized / Spectrum / Brian Jonestown Massacre / Dead Skeletons (and many more) fans, or people who like Gibson Thunderbirds.

Will Carruthers has (finally) decided to sell the 1976 Thunderbird he used recording and touring with the above. Further details here...

Technicians of Spaceship Hawkwind. Followers of Dr. Technical! (one of Brock's many aliases).

Back in the early 80s the audience was split roughly into three, leather, labcoats and afghans 🙂

Sadly my afghan got attacked by rats and my labcoat is no more, so when I went to see Hawkwind for the first time in over 25 years last November I bought a NOS one from the 80s and used special fabric crayons to draw the cover of Warrior on the back.

To my amazement I was the only person in a thousand or more wearing a labcoat!

Ah, thanks for the explanation - the only time I saw Hawkwind live was sometime in the early 80s (Preston Guildhall), and to be honest the only things I can remember are the lights and the labcoats, but never understood the latter!!! Just for the record, I'd probably have fit more in the leather (and denim) camp... 😎

I think the grounding strip is particular to the '62 reissue basses but not 100% on that.  Over the years I've had three Japanese jazzes and all have been excellent.  Currently (selfishly) playing a couple of Japan Geddy Lee jazzes both excellent but at some point will need to let one go.

These are probably my favourite of the various offerings, one is CIJ and one MIJ.  From different manufacturers in Japan I beleive but you'd be hard pressed to spot a difference bewteen them.

    A couple of 62RIs

Shortly after I joined Basschat in 2008, somebody was offering a white 65RI like that for sale.

To this day, I'm still kicking myself for not buying it... 😢

I still haven't got over that time when I threw you a birthday party, hired a petting Zoo, got a clown, hired a juggler AND a balloon artist as well as a caricature artist, a harp player and an ice cream van, and you didn't even show up... last time I do ANYTHING for you!!!

    That late, huh... 😳

Angelwitch, along with a Girlschool et al, were one of the many bands I saw at the aforementioned Norbreck Nightspot. And apparently one of the bassists that I beat out when I joined my London-based metal band, back in the day, was Kevin Riddles, or so I was told. No idea whether it was true.
One other surreal moment from that venue and era was a friend and myself chatting briefly with a very drunk, very much less famous but understandably pretty made-up Neil Finn, at the time I Got You hit big. I had to ask my friend last year whether this actually happened, but he has an incredible memory and he assured me it did. 😂

Sounds like we were at all the same gigs!!! And even after seeing Motorhead umpteen times (at least once on every tour from 1979 to 1984, plus odd gigs since), I still reckon Magnum at the Norbreck was the loudest gig I've ever attended... 🤯

A recently formed and as yet unknown Blizzard of Ozz played a couple of warm up gigs in 1980. One was at the Norbreck Castle down the road from me. Myself and a friend went down in the afternoon, trying to blag a way in to the soundcheck. The venue itself was kind of tacked on to the hotel, sticking out into the car park. We stood outside talking to a guy who said he’d already met Ozzy; after a while he disappeared into the venue. Shortly after a door at the back of the venue opened and 2 guys walked out. I went over and asked them if they’d seen our acquaintance. One of them said he might be inside and gestured towards the door, so we went in. We found him inside and asked where Ozzy was. He gestured to the door and said “he went out there”. Turned out the guy I’d asked was Ozzy. As a huge Sabs fan at the time I’d expected some great big larger than life bloke, but he was quite small and almost unrecognisable; he’d had his hair cut a lot shorter and was dressed nothing like I expected. Long story short,  we stayed to watch an entire afternoon’s sound check, met and chatted with all the band, including a then unknown Randy Rhoads, Bob Dailey and Lee Kerslake (as a huge Heep fan too I was very impressed by this). Bob Dailey was absolutely deafening, shaking the whole venue, which Randy tried to point out and which Bob was having none of. 😂 Ozzy spent much of the afternoon swearing at roadies or soundmen, but all the band were very pleasant to us. I still have a promo copy of Crazy Train, loads of which were handed out after the gig, and a signed copy of Sabs Vol 4, which I took along.

Also saw a lot of the NWoBHM bands at the same venue. In fact I recently found out that in certain quarters 2 of my earliest bands were considered part of it, which made me laugh.

Saw Lem and the boys a few times on the Ace of Spades tour, when they first really hit the big time. Met them too. Lem was a gent.

Roadied for Grand Prix once at one gig; anyone remember them?

Hah, I was just going to post about the Blizzard of Ozz warm-up at the Norbreck, but then saw you'd beaten me to it! Ditto the NWoBHM bands we saw there who then went on to bigger things (Iron Maiden with Di'Anno, Def Leppard, Saxon), and the ones who didn't quite make it but are still going, or have been and gone and come back again (eg Angel Witch, Vardis and Witchfynde). Oh, and Hanoi Rocks at the Bierkeller on the Prom. Happy, heady days... 😎
