I think maybe I then bought this? Who knows if it's the same cab (he has three!), either way great comms, super quick delivery (cab packed great) and item exactly as described. I'm a very happy bass player, what a cab. Thanks Rob, another fab member of this great community of bass players.

I think this was the "@Merton cab", it been great, glad you like it. I'm upgrading to a pair of Super Compacts, bear with, I may be back to One10's, who knows!

  2. Fabulous sounding cab in good condition (a little tolex peel on the back as they do). Includes fitted cover.

I'll probably regret selling it at some point, this is my third one. But requirements at the moment are for different cabs.

Will ship at cost, Parcelforce Express 24 fully insured probably less than £20.

Then I am following in the footsteps of giants. How much time do you think I would get with £500 for a 59 Les Paul owned by Bonamassa? I'm happy to let him have it for a few weeks a year as he does have a few gigs arranged.

Not sure what he might say. I could probably ask him. Here's a pic from a few years ago, that's me at the back on the left sitting on the vintage Marshall playing a few licks on his '59 Les Paul "Carmelita", and Joe B himself playing rhythm for me on a '58 Les Paul previously owned by Mick Ralphs of Bad Company.

  4. Joint ownership is actually something people do. Joe Bonamassa and Charlie Daughtry buy guitars jointly and arrange periods of time when they reside with each of the two owners. It means they can buy really high end gear and enjoy it, but for half the price.

As an aside I saw @ossyrocks in The Out and Out Blues Band yesterday doing a warmup gig in Lancaster.

Really, really good. Two sets of blues, very tight band, no hesitation in recommending them to anybody who likes blues to go, watch and listen.

As I was watching and listening, I was thinking Alan Price, Eric Burden, a bit of Dr Feelgood. The driving Hammond and Leslie organ were great, the drummer and lead guitarist worked together well. If only the bassist was up to scratch :) Just joking. All of the band worked together well.  The mix was great, I could hear all the instruments really clearly, massive surprise as often the sound is garbage.

@ossyrocks and the drummer put down a great rthymn section, surprised to see @ossyrocks singing as well. He's very good, not saying that because he's on the board, he really is very good.

To be clear, the band are not a tribute band and had their own take on the songs. Two singers, one on harp, one on bass, a great keyboard player, drummer knew his stuff, hime and the bass were tight and a lead/rhythmn guitar who stayed out of the limelight and just got on with it without being flash. None of the band grandstanded, none of the band hogged the (very, very small) stage, the band were tight and loose :)

This may have been a warmup gig, but I thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Very few people there, so I had a table to myself and just watched and had a wonderful time.

    Thanks

I'm flattered Rob, thank you. Can I use your review ? You're the first reviewer we've ever had!

Ah, good job I asked. Still need to ask Zoe, but shes in York for the day.

    Will love to come though.

    Thanks

Don't sweat it, it's a warm up gig for The Ribble Valley Jazz & Blues Festival. We're playing twice on Sunday 5th. So that one would be a better "day out" for you.

Let me have a chat with Mission Control. Would love to come.

Is this at the old railway station on the sea front?

    Rob

No Rob, it's in Lancaster. Parking is limited at the club, but there's on street parking around and about.

Lancaster Railway Club, Morecambe Rd, Lancaster LA1 2RX.

Nearest pay and display would be Cable St - Cable St, Lancaster LA1 1HD

  8. Just back in from rehearsal before our gig tomorrow night. Tomorrow will be our first gig of two full sets for the new blues band.

All a bit last minute, but a few more tunes have been thrown my way on vocals this week, so I sang 4 tunes tonight which I have not sung before with the band, and we're gigging them tomorrow.

All went ok, so I'm fairly happy.

I am concerned that I was drafted into this band for my bass playing abilities alone, they had no idea I could sing, and slowly but surely. the band leader is giving me more and more of the lead vocal duties. I'm singing 10, the lead singer and harmonica player is singing 14 at the moment. I now have the last song of the second set, and the encore too. I'm concerned that the singer/harmonica player is going to get a bit fed up. He's a great guy, and we get on. I suppose we should just keep talking, like we have so far. I really want this band to work, it's exactly what I've been looking for for the last couple of years (except for the singing bit), and now it's a reality. Maybe I'm just being over sensitive.

  9. I have two J's at the moment, a vintage '73 and a 2003 '75 AVRI. They are quite different, the AVRI is natural/maple/black blocks, and the '73 is classic SB/Rosewood/Tort.

The AVRI is light, maybe 8 1/2 lbs, the '73 is about 9lbs 2oz. They sound very different, the '73 is mellow and deep, but can get honky on the back pickup if you need it. The AVRI is much more what you would expect a Jazz to sound like, and can get very funky on the back pickup. I've not had a MIJ, but I had a MIM Roadworn. It was nice to play and very light, but I did have to change the loom and the pickups. I have an '87 MIJ P bass which is a very well made instrument, but again, changed loom and pickup.

If it were me making the decision for you, and you could only buy one bass, I would be looking for a vintage one but at a reasonable weight.

    Good luck!

  10. I use a Phil Jones Bass Double Four. Ridiculously good sounding in the lounge for such a tiny thing. Aux In and Headphone outs too.

Ed Friedland actually gigs his on small intimate gigs, but he does run an Fdeck HPF to wring a little more power out of it.

Actually, whilst I have all you knowledgeable folk assembled, can I ask a follow up question?

I'm puzzled by the speaker outputs on the CTM 100. They look like 1/4 jacks to me, and that's what the Ashdown website says they are. However it says on the rear panel 'Use Neutrik touchproof connectors only'. This is confusing me. I know Neutrik usually equals Speakon, but these don't look like Speakon sockets. The CTM 300 says 'use Speakon connectors only' so I presume Ashdown are intentionally drawing a distinction, but I've googled 'Neutrik touchproof connectors' and not got much back.

It works with a standard 1/4 jack speaker cable, but I don't want to continue using that if it's liable to damage either me or the amp! I don't currently possess any Speakon cables, so I can't just try one out.

Can anyone advise what cable I should be using?

I run a vintage valve head into a modern speaker cab on occasion, in a very similar way to what you'll be doing. You just need a good quality mono 1/4" jack to speakon cable. I have these and they do the job. I always carry spares of everything, but that's just me. If you've got it, disaster never happens, when you don't, it does.

  12. I also have a '73 Jazz in which the bridge pickup died. Working one day, and not the next.

I searched around and talked to a few people and in the end I placed my trust in Ash at Oil City Pickups. He has a roll of the original wire used on these pickups, which he used on my restoration. We agreed a slight overwind too, to 7.6k. He completed the job by lacquering the pickup as it had been originally. He turned it round in less than a week including postage and charged me next to nothing relatively. Highly recommended. Oh, and the pickup sounds better than it did before.

I've got a couple, too. As mentioned, Sunday evening at the Rose and Crown with The Merkins and Monday about 4 at the Aspimall Arms with the Cheating Hearts. What rig will you be using at the RnC @ossyrocks? I'd be interested in hearing that SC. I'll be using the 610 and GK RB400 in all likelyhood.

Change of plan amp and cab wise. The SC is coming along with the recently acquired Tecamp Puma 900. I'm going to use the same rig for both bands.

The Berg is back in the classifieds here.
