1. I don't play fretless but do have an L2 and I've tried all the strings you mention with the exception of the S500L. Mine are the S500M and they sure thud and thump on the L2

In my experience the Status black nylons are easy to play, not too tight and the strings add a certain round wound clarity to the black nylon charecter. What I didn't like was how they thinned out as you got to the G string. Both in sound and feel. This is from memory, it's a while since I tried them. The La Bella S660 are the complete opposite - big and chunky, rounded attack with quicker decay - that description sounds quite appealing but I felt it was a little sterile on the L2. In the end I preferred the normal S500M flats which have a more articulated attack and don't lose the depth.

And now I'm just trying some standard gauge rounds and realising I can get the action lower and it almost plays itself.

2. I played one of these Lakin P basses recently and was very impressed with tone, fit and finish. All USA hardware, bone nut and nothing wrong with the headstock IMO. It has it's own appeal. A big plus is you can get at the truss rod. All basses should have easy truss access. I see these as a modern, practical and in some ways improved version of a classic design.

3. I think this is a very cool amp for the home with the emphasis on classic looks, versatility and a clean (no wires) approach. I like the idea that you can stream bluetooth audio from a smartphone and just use it as a music system in bass downtime. Coupling that with wireless bass makes a very neat package IMO.

4. None of the above basses particularly interest me although if the AC had binding I would give it a second look and hope the signature is a bit scrawly so no one can tell who's it is :-). You are right about the random choice of some signature instruments. Why Herbie Flowers (with the SAME LPB Jazz bass for over 50 years !!) or JJ Burnel (Precision most of the way - and a trendsetter) haven't been acknowledged beats me. I think a 1959/60 LPB Jazz with U neck and stack knobs at a sensible price point would interest more people beyond the signature.

5. NOW SOLD...
A feeler as I need to fund some solar panels... offers welcome.

I have a Ampeg Heritage B15 from the first and only limited European run. There were only 100 of these made, all with numbered plate and only a few trickled into the UK. These are not the same as the B15N widely available today which has a black fascia, is PCB based (I think) and costs around £2800. This Heritage B15 fliptop is handwired in the USA and uses high-quality hand-selected tubes. The amp had a retail price of £4995 and a street price of at least £4000 (average seemed to be around £4400).

I currently have it boxed up so photos may take a few days. There are very light scuffs on the lid from shipping (annoying but it was like that when I got it). Depending on the light you may see these or not, they are not major at all and when the combo is in use they are of course on the underside of the lid which is no longer visble. It's really nothing at all but if you look closely they are there.

Anyway, the amp sounds fantastic, looks cool as heck with the black checked tolex and can switch between 1964 or 1966 valve preamps before running to the valve power stage.

It's totally tubelicious. It's got to be as close to the holy grail as it gets. It would be ideal for a recording studio.

Not looking for any trades at the moment, thanks.

6. Managed to take a few new shots of the Ken Smith Black Tiger. Yes, it is a lovely work of art. I couldn't find any dings or marks at all. As I say it has had very little use and has never been played out. Included with the sale is all the case candy, KS strap, tools, warranty etc.

Had lots of interest and trade possibilities... thanks for that.... would really prefer the cash as I'm not 100% on the direction I'm going basswise right now... although a Jazz will definately be coming into the family.

7. Price: £3000 firm.

I've had a couple of attempts at five string now and I have sadly come to the conclusion that I prefer playing four string. Hence I'm putting my Ken Smith Black Tiger 5 up for sale. Bass was bought new and imported by me last year from Bass Central in the USA and has pretty much sat in it's case since then apart from a few attempts at home of converting myself to five string.

Bass plays nice with low action. I attach the original photos as I don't recall the bass taking any knocks at all but I WILL have a real close look and update this post if necessary with fresh photos.

I would prefer a cash deal but I do have an interest in a Rob Allen MB2 or perhaps a Status 30th Anniversary Series II if a deal can be struck. Other passing interests COULD include a Spector NS2 or EuroLX, Warwick Streamer Stage 1, nice stack knob or binding and blocks Jazz or Ibanez Musician MC924 or MC940 DS with cash my way of course. Or even a Ken Smith Black Tiger 4 string !!

I recall the cost of the bass, shipping, tax and duties was over £4000 originally. It's a gorgeous instrument but I haven't felt comfortable with a five.

Figured Walnut Top/Figured Maple Core/Walnut Back, 5-Piece Maple/Bubinga Neck w/Ebony Fingerboard, Mother Of Pearl Top & Side Dots, Smith Humbucker Pickups & 3-Band 18v Preamp, Gold Hardware, Case. Serial #5TN626513. 10 LBS.

8. MC900 is the one Sting used with the front-facing (and more prone to damage) jack socket. I think the MC924 extended the frets from 22? to 24. Later revisions of the body shape had a larger contour around the edges and various types of pickups were used. There is a webpage with a lot of MC history but I can't locate it right now.
