You don't need a bass book. Go to a charity shop and get any book on music theory and then transfer the information to the bass. It'll cost you £1

Very true !
A major is the same played one a violin, xylophone or a bass.

I still own two Fenders that were each more expensive than an Alleva Coppolo and a Mike Lull added together.
Far more attractive investment than a bloody pension fund.
One was made in 1965:

And one was made in 1957:

wow i did not expect so many to agree!! ha-ha! Anyway why i thought post the tread was because i was recently in a shop bass direct, a fantastic shop, i went there to look at a mayones or whatever its called on sale at £1300.... but i also half kept looking at the fender usa p bass v deluxe at a great price (not made anymore with the Bill Lawrence P/u near the bridge) .... i seen it a few times on the site over 2 months and Wonder why on earth is that beut still for sale?? its says mint had a good price and was a 5 string ....perfect for me... so i made the trip from Essex, and looked at all the stunning eye candy (but not for long) and picked up the mayonees ... and then put the thing down again after about 2mins playing..it was a heavy bugger and looked like a gem of exotic-ness .. rather too much bordering on tacky even... then went to look at the fender.... that was that... this baby is mine had it a month now great bass... im guessing it did not get that much of a look in at the shop, but to me it was the best thing in there regardless of price tag.., after a jazz 1974 i had a while back, this is probably the best playing bass iv had..i did go to get one many years ago, but it was like £1500 then so i passed on it ....The guy in the shop Mark i think his name is said about my fender its a great bass but the pre amp is naff..and to swap it out... i thought ...what is he talking about? this bass sounds as sweet as a nut! why on earth would i wanna stick in a £300 pre amp .. its not he same fender anymore! with a slap sound out of this world, and punchy finger style why change it? ...ok i know its not the passive fender but hey i can say the same about them too, fantastic.. Reading through the posts on this tread, many have all been there high end basses, trying to squeeze out the sound imbedded in our head from years back... then as said above changing out p/u s n pre amps... (which i never did, i just got rid) only to end up selling the f***er and losing tons of dosh and swapping it back to a 2/3 knob passive bass.... haha.. It is merely my thoughts and experience over many years of playing different beasts... the 70-80s jap basses though like the arias and Yamaha they are very cool too.... they are superb. Do bear in mind its only my personal opinion after 30 years with as many and more, much more even basses i have owned in this time..

What the guy in the shop is talking about when he says to swap the preamp, is to spend more money with him for something you don't need, and is is way overpriced anyway.

You have to adopt a portfolio approach to work.
Playing gigs, teaching, writing, busking, sessions, running open mic's, producing, engineering, journalism.
It all helps, the key word is versatility.
If someone phones you and asks you to do a gig the following night then you need to be able to, this sort of thing is usually for sight-readers only, so learn to read music !
Cruise ship work is brilliant, you get paid to travel on a luxury ship to holiday places, again you need to be able to sight-read.
Get to know Logic and/or Protools. -
As the owner of 3 Fender basses, plus a Stingray 5 I do kind of agree with this.
I think most so called super jazzes or whatever are just essentially a jazz with a fancy facing wood, and boutique pickups and a preamp.
The aged ash body on my US Marcus Miller looks stunning, and I can get any sound I want from it.
How many threads do you see asking "I've got a (insert name) and don't like the preamp, or I don't like the pickups, can anyone recommend a new (very expensive) replacement.
Look on Bass direct's website and you'll see loads of ridiculously expensive basses, and even more ridiculously priced pre's and pickups, all boasting about how they'll improve your sound.
Then look on the internet and see how many 'name' players, and working pro's are playing these basses.
I think the thing people miss, is that you'll pretty much sound like you regardless. -

Fact - bowing is unfeasibly cool
I was watching Tony Levin bowing his NS CR4 with Peter Gabriel, and totally agree, it is very cool.

Youll need a few lessons anyway.
My first real bow was a carbon fiber French bow from yita music on ebay. I think it was £120 and i still have it. Very good bow for the price.
Hi,
Thanks, I'll look into one of those.
I didn't realise how expensive they could be !!!!!!!!
Lessons are in hand, hopefully one of my tutors at college. -

Depends on your budget !
Hi,
I don't want to pay a fortune for one, but I don't want to buy something and find that it's not very good.
I'm a music student so I do get a discount from some places.
I've never bowed a bass before, though I have played a double bass a bit in the past, I borrowed one for a couple of months a few years ago.
I'm hoping to maybe get some gigs with the EUB, but the bow is mainly (at the moment) for recording purposes. -
carbon fibre over any cheap bow... and get some lessons....
I was planning on lessons, there's a guy at uni who's predominantly a double bassist, I was gonna ask him.
Any suggestions on the carbon fibre bow please ? -
Bows are very personal things so best to try some out.
Whats your budget? French or German?
Is there enough room on a NS to bow? Just googled some pictures and the radius looks very flat and the space between body and fingerboard looks very small to et any real movement.
Hi,
Thanks for replying.
That's the thing, I thought a bow was a bow !
It's only today when I started looking I see there're French ones, German etc. I really have no idea what to go for.
I think people bow them.

I'm getting an NS NXT 5 string EUB is couple of weeks or so.
Can anyone recommend a decent bow to go with it please ? -

I think there should be one rule on this thread.. which is, don't post a link to your 'Soundcloud' unless you've listened to and posted a message about the previous posters offering (?) .. just an idea? this may have been done somewhere else before??
Anyway, I got lucky.. because Ian's sound/genre is right up my street (ambient/chill-out).. and I'm now a 'follower' - not in any weird kind of way you understand..
If I was being hyper critical, I would like to hear more 'Bass playing'.. but that's it.. all good!
So.. here's mine.. https://soundcloud.com/simon-edward

Hi Simon,
Thanks !
I love your retro-harmonics song, nice man !
I only have fretted basses, and they don't really suit what I'm doing, but I'm getting an electric upright bass in a few weeks, so hopefully there'll be some 'real' bass soon. I'd like a fretless too sometime in the near future. -

I keep coming and looking at this advert, I've also just spent the best part of an hour and a half reading through 30 odd pages of the Talkbass NXT mega-thread !
Question - do you need anything else with it ? I kept reading that it's best to use it with a preamp, I've got a Markbass LM2 that has a balanced input.
It's really for recording that I'm intrigued by it, I'm doing a lot of writing and recording at the moment, and using DB samples in Logic played on a keyboard. My music's very Peter Gabriel'ish. -
The only lead I've ever had fail on me was a Planet Waves one. Tiny sample size, not very scientific but enough to make me never want one again. OBBM 4 LIFE.
It hasn't failed, it's actually quite a well made cable.
It's the tip that's the problem. It's as long from the black ring to the tip as the other lead, but the waist bit (don't know what to call it), is longer and narrower, so the spring bit inside the jack socket isn't making contact properly.
-
Yep.
Although the diameter of the shaft is pretty much standardised, the tip shape varies across different manufacturers plugs.
I've used 'posh' cables in the past but they've nearly always caused problems - only cables I use now have Neutrik connectors as standard because I've found they always work.
I'm ordering one with Neutrik connectors.
I gotta say, I thought a jack was a jack was a jack.

I've got 7 basses and I'm planning on buying 2 more this summer, so I vote keep them all
.
I have fond memories of basses that I've sold and wish that I hadn't.
A pre EB Stingray is close to top of my list of 'some day I will own' basses, together with a '77 Jazz and a '60's Precision. -
Well what a load of rubbish !
Here's a thread I posted earlier -
http://basschat.co.u...ass-input-jack/
I went to all the bother of changing the barrel jack socket on my beloved TRB6P, only to encounter the same problem.
I've noticed on some of my other basses that a slight movement of the jack plug causes the signal to drop out.
Tonight out of desperation I thought, well I'll try a different cable and it was fine, only problem is that cable is only 1.5 metres long.
Sorry about the poor photos, but you can maybe make out the different shapes of the tips of the two cables ? The guitar cable is the one on the right hand side.

The guitar cable's tip is narrower and shorter at the end, probably explaining the poor contact with the inside of the jack socket. -
Ignore this
and see my other thread !
-
Thanks
, it's definitely just the input jack though. I've read that it's a common problem with this type of socket.
The jack socket is attached to the preamp by wires, so I don't think moving the jack plug from side to side would have any effect on the preamp. -
My 22 year old much loved TRB6-P bass developed a problem with the input jack.
I bought a new Neutrik one and my brother who's a whiz with a soldering iron fitted it for me. I've got the same problem though, it cuts out when you wiggle the jack plug about.
If you hold it in one place it's fine, but the weight of the lead causes it to move, and cut out.
They have a long barrel type socket.
How easy is it to fit a regular jack socket ?
Is it really a job for a luthier to do ? -
Schack ?
Looks very similar to this one -

I remember going to Winchester a few years ago. The cathedral wanted some ridiculous amount of money to go in, £15 or something each. Consequently people were stood in the doorway taking photos looking down the aisle, an empty cathedral.
Last time I went it was free, and the place was packed.

You dont have to be able to read and write in order to speak and communicate with people. A child learns to say "da da" and "ma ma" etc., long before it learns the alphabet. He does it by listening closely and then copying.
But the child learns what the words he's copying mean. You wouldn't get very far speaking words that you know know the meaning off.
I'm at music college, having a 'good ear' and a thorough knowledge of theory and harmony, and being able to sight read are given equal importance.
Planet waves cables.

Just out of interest, what make barrel socket did you buy?

Hi,
It was a Neutrik.
