1.
Im not familiar with g&l basses :)
I think the wording in the ad (for the Tribute, not this one! :) ) is deliberately trying to mislead the unwary into thinking it's USA-made by talking about the factory like that. Call the Trade Descriptions people!!!

  2. In all sincerity I think you'd be hard pressed to find a nicer chap on here than Lawrence (and that said knowing there are a LOT of really nice people on here!). I've just bought a very special Spector off him and he has been immensely helpful, considerate, communicative, and a joy to deal with throughout. I wouldn't hesitate to deal with him again - not least to have the opportunity for some more good long friendly chats! An absolutely A1 bloke.

ps edit... Having now seen Lawrence's reply below, re. the problem referred to, it really wasn't that big an issue (a slightly dodgy pot, that's all) but he was the perfect seller throughout, had the Bass Centre investigate the problem, procured a replacement part, and payed for fitting, throughout being always fully communicative and quite unnecessarily apologetic! I entirely stand by all I said above - indeed the way in which he dealt with this little glitch would give me even MORE confidence in buying from him again (if that's possible!).

... and btw he's not paying me for this! :) Seriously, really, really great guy.

  3. WAAAHHHH!!!

Thanks all, the comments have really clarified things for me, cemented by my mentor's comments (offline) who thought the reason for its homelessness was that the preamp might be a bit "harsh" and he'd swap it for a Bartolini... Which makes me think I might really like it :)

Unfortunately my bank manager wouldn't

Why can you never find a dead relative with an inheritance for you when you need one... !

  4. My biggest piece of advice would be - try before you buy. You can get a cracker of a budget bass or a duff "good'un". You need something which is set up and comfortable for you and makes the sounds you want, never mind what it is.

That said I'd echo two things from above - buy secondhand (especially at this price band) and definitely check out the Spector Classic. Cracking bass and you should be able to get a beaut well within budget.

You got up to *12* that way? !!!

... you wouldn't be interested in a wife trade would you? :)

  6. Yeah come on give us the news... I bet you had a great time!

I had 30-odd years off (and changed instrument - used to be a drummer) and loved it from the moment I got back onstage! Mind you I wasn't quite as enthusiastic as you re. numbers (we started with an open mic night locally so only had to do 5! :) ) although we did 35 at gig 3 (and I managed without documentary help!)

    Keep it up!
