1. Hi guys,

Looking for some advice and opinions! Just bought a pair of old Peavey Pro 15s as part of a band PA upgrade project. On getting them home I tried playing a CD through them at household volumes and they sounded fine (if a bit boomy, but they were on the floor!). However when finally getting a chance to turn up and see what they could do, I heard a fairly nasty buzzy farty noise on the low notes (again off a commercial CD) at at levels well below what I thought they should be capable of turning out. A little closer review showed that it was just one speaker which was doing this from moderate volumes, and the other was fine at considerably higher levels. I tried swapping the channels and it is definitely the speaker.

Question is - I presume it is damaged in some way, but how should I approach the chap I just got them from? He seemed a straightforward chap (fortunately quite local) and said they'd come from a church PA, never been strongly driven, but had been stored in a garage for some months. I paid £150 for the pair. I'm a numpty with anything technical, but should I be looking to hand them back, get a partial refund and repair, or what? And what is the most likely cause and cost to fix, do you reckon?

Any advice gratefully received before he comes over to have a review...

    Andy

  2. I have a small Teac micro hifi which is just gathering dust - model MC-03, with radio, cassette, CD, speakers, remote control - I think it's 15w RMS/channel but couldn't swear to this. It has a nifty front pop-up CD loader which lights up in neon blue :) It's nothing special but ideal for kids or kitchen (which is where we had it till upgrading).

If anyone would like it I'd be happy to swap it for a couple of speakon-speakon leads.

    Anyone?

ps I'm in London (Northolt, UB5) and could deliver by motorcycle if not too far.

  3. HI all,

Some time ago I acquired a bargain PA through Ebay consisting of a Stagemix 300 powered mixer and a pair of Fender cabinets. I'm now looking to change some gear around but would like to reuse the cabinets if possible - the trouble is I have no idea of their model numbers or specs!

They are wedge shaped with top hat mounts and a single grab handle on the upper rear, have no identifying markings whatsoever except for red Fender logo plates on the front and serial numbers on the back - FE125953 and FE125936. The serial numbers are on the bottom edge of the jack plates, which have two sockets. They have a 15" cone with two circular ports in the bottom front corners, and a horn at the top centre which has a dividing strip in the middle. They have black wire mesh fronts and black carpet covers with metal corner plates and rubber feet on the bottom (top hat end) only. I've scanned google images and can't see anything exactly liike them - these look similar (same badge, basic shape and horn but no ports and different grille) and are supposed to be 115-ELCs.

Anyone got any ideas what these are or what specification they might have (impedance and power handling), or how I might find out?

    Ta :)

  4. Stuck a little jam my band did up on FB, a funkier variation on one of our normal numbers:

Not a bad recording, methinks, for a living room on a Boss MicroBR using the internal mic! Apologies for the odd cockup btw, our singer said she wanted a "busy bass" so it was all on the fly...

A question, though: just having a logo for a vid is soo boring, any tips for a quick way to make a more active montage using Windows MM or somesuch? Can you just throw some pics at it and let it ramdomly rotate through them with effects?

Hmmm, i think you might have a job without buying something. I thing VLC media player has a built in eq you can play with for playback but for editting what you got you may be better off recording the sound a little better in the first place (not that what your daughter did wasn't good for a quick video); the mics in cameras are not the best. You might want to think about getting a laptop with cubase or logic or something similar and mic-ing up a rough mix. We generally record all our rehearsals with a couple of sm58's into a desktop with cubase running stereo. If you got the gear it's always a great way of listening back to where your going wrong when playing. It's proved very valuable to us over the years.

Thanks for the helpful advice. All I have at the moment to record rehearsals is a Boss Micro BR with its built-in mic, which works surprisingly well but is of course still pretty limited. I have been considering trying to record direct to PC so I shall give it a go! Cheers :)

When your playing live or in the video?

In the video. If I'd realised at the time I'd have turned up - plenty under the hood! - but didn't want to dominate! You may notice I did tweak it up a tad early on as I was having trouble hearing myself clearly.

Nice little vid, in what sense do you mean boosting the bass?
In the sense that I can't hear it very clearly! :)

And thanks for the kind comments - my littlun will be pleased !
