  1. Have you tried your bass in the boot, I had a couple of Octavia VRS saloons over the years and I could get two Precisions in gig bags immediately behind the rear lights (at the wide bit!) my 11 plate was slightly better than my 64 plate but even with the 64 plate the little plastic divider on the left can be removed to make it wider...not sure you would get a Thunderbird in there but anything Precision sized will fit in a gig bag

  2. I shifted a whole load of basses, amps and cabs through Bass Direct last year, I told them what I wanted back for them, they priced them accordingly and all but one (an ultra rare Bass Collection 801) sold quickly and I got back what I needed, I sold the 801 through a friend to his daughter in Brighton, she got a cracking bass for not a lot of money and I got back what it owed me, TBH it was completely hassle free!

I found the Digitech Drop pedal works well on 4 string bass in standard tuning.. not quite so well on the bottom of a 5 or an already down-tuned 4. It tracks a bit better if you can put a HPF in front of it, but it's not the end of the world if you don't have one. I found it good for up to 3 semitones down, beyond which the very slight chorus-ish thing that it introduces started to make me feel out of tune. I play by ear, though, so maybe you could go further down if you can play to the numbers and not let it put you off. It was great for live work to avoid swapping bass or retuning, but I wouldn't record with it - it's not that good.

I have the Digitech Drop, it is OK on bass, I used it for a full tone drop in the rock band I used to play in, it sounds OK but you can hear that it is a processed sound, it is more convincing on a guitar! If you can find one, grab one, they are an easy way to quickly change tuning as long as you are not dropping too far!

I don’t use compression live, have tried many times but just don’t like it.

However for home practice I like it. I wouldn’t say it covers up poor technique rather than really highlights it, and as such it improves technique as a result.

Totally agree Lozz, I find a setting I like on my Boss CS3 when practising at home then hate it as soon as I try it onstage, maybe that is the real truth about compression, it only sounds good at home!

I have quite a few spare MM pickguards and sadly none of them fit the current SUB series

  6. The Mission in Leeds this year, Mr Hussey was drunk and arrogant, the sound was really poor and the set felt totally flat...always loved the Mission but that was the last time I will be bothering to see them if the singer can't be bothered to put on a decent show, I had friends that went to Nottingham and London and all said it would be the last time they would bother going to see them!

  7. My wife and I went for dinner in a local restaurant and we noticed somewhere in the background was a lone guitarist playing an acoustic and singing gently along, nothing unusual until he launched into a fantastic rendition of Kraftwork's The Model...not a song I had ever considered as an acoustic guitar track!

  9. I've had quite a few, the Thunder 1a was one of the best starter basses available in the 80's, I did my first ever proper gig at High Hall in Birmingham in front of 2000 people playing a Thunder III fretless, sadly I find them a bit heavy nowadays so have progressed to lighter instruments, for some reason they always seemed to be seen as the poor cousin to the Aria Pro range of the same era although looking at some of the prices being asked for Westone's on eBay at the moment you would think they were rivalling the likes of Alembic and Wal!

  10. I haven't played the Dimension bass nor have I played a 5 string sub, however, there seems to be quite a lot of comments out there in regard of poor electrics in the cheap sub basses, I have a lovely cheap sub in black / maple and once I had swapped out both the pre-amp and pickup I finally had a bass that sounded as good as it looked, if you do go for the sub, budget another £250.00 or so to swap out the stock electrics.

I have struggled with 5 string basses over the years, I have never really got on with them, I currently have just 1 that I see as a keeper which is a Yamaha 735a it is a really well built, great sounding and great playing bass, and the black on black colour scheme looks awesome....if you can find a used one they are well worth the money, if you are ever up in the Northampton direction you are welcome to come and try mine

  11. I think it's tough, certainly in recent years, to find a poor Fender Precision bass, my personal favourite is my Mexican built 50's classic, however, some won't like the baseball bat like dimensions of the neck, I have never played a bad Mexican Precision much as I have never played a bad Japanese Precision or a USA Precision

Some of the 70's USA Precision's can be very heavy, however, they still tend to play really well, with current asking prices being where they are for these 70's basses you are very unlikely to find one in your price range anyway.

Don't discount Squier basses just because they are cheaper, some of them are fantastic basses and easily rival the build quality of their more expensive Fender badged brothers and nearly everything is interchangeable on a Precision so, if you like a certain neck profile with a certain colour and a certain pickup sound then you can customise to suit.

As others have suggested try and play as many as you can and get a feel for what you like neck wise and sound wise, if you are in the Northampton area I have a whole bunch you can play and see what appeals, just drop me a PM
