And it looks like I am a TI jazz flats fan, I got some Labella low tension flats, fitted them and they sounded immediately broken in, like most flats sound like after a few months but I missed the clarity of the TI's, they sound like flats but they sing in the high mids instead of being a dull thump like a lot of flats, the TI's are back on, it was a pricey experiment but if you don't try then you never know

I'd hate to think what I've spent on strings over the years. Always comes back to TI flats though.

Never tried Cobalts but I wouldn't say my TI flats are "brighter and closer tonally to rounds".  The GHS Brite Flats I tried a while back are nearer what Linus27 is after but I seem to recall they were high-ish tension.  I don't think 'bright' and 'low tension' go together.

Well it's a sliding scale isn't it. TI flats are brighter and more punchy than the majority of flatwounds.  They're certainly closer to rounds than something like Labella Deep Talking flats or Olympias.

TI flats are lower tension than something like Labella Low Tension flats and they're more roundwound-like as well. You can't expect that roundwound zing from them but they're a great string.

I have a gorgeous Fender Precision which has a maple high gloss fretless neck. So to not chew up the neck, my string choices are pretty limited. I'm currently using Rotosound 77 Jazz Flatwounds which I do like as they are low tension like rounds, feel nice to play and sound very good, I wound say warm and round.

However I would like to try something different. Are there any string that are low tension like rounds or my Rotosound flats, brighter and closer tonally to rounds but still smooth like flats as to not chew up my maple gloss fretless neck?

TI flats or Ernie Ball Cobalt Flatwounds

What’s everybody’s best guess at AJ’s string choice? A lot of his bass lines sound like flats to me.

I've done a bit of research into this over the last few days. This was the clearest image I could find.

Red silks at the ball end of the string and black silks at the head. Sounds like flats (going off recent performances) but the two different string colours is puzzling.

    Labellas maybe?

  5. I went from using a Diamond BCP1 (couldn't really tell what it was doing) to using the onboard Ashdown compressor and I gotta say I'm a fan. Nice little bit of smoothing out and with the FS-4 I can switch it off on the fly for the more rocky numbers.

Using the onboard comp means it's another pedal that I don't have to worry about really.

  6. Damn, an underrated bassist and a big influence on me as an early player. I spent many a night as a young teen trying to play along to my Dad's 'Best of Budgie' CD. In For The Kill, Parents and Breadfan kicked my derriere and really helped me with my pick playing.

    RIP.

oh - I thought the ABM's were made in the UK.

They used to be. EVO ii and Klystron (EVO iii) were made in the UK I believe. There's no doubt that the current models are quality though.

I've toyed with buying a dual VU / rack mounted Evo IV and I just don't see the point.

Hi Ian - I can recommend Howard Smith over in Clarendon Park Road area. Nice chap and knows his way around most stringed instruments.

I'm sure it won't be long before you are setting your own up however. Plenty of great advice and support on here 👍

Further to this I can recommend Tom from https://www.dontfretguitarworks.com/

He's based in Countesthorpe and did a great job on my P bass. Howard passed me on to him when he was too busy / on holiday. Howard taught Tom apparently. Think it cost me £40.
