You've already got pretty dark arco strings, my advice is get your bass to a good luthier for a soundpost adjustment & work on your technique to get a darker sound. Evahs are good strings though, my preference is for the mediums, the weichs are too soft & spongey with the bow for me.

I'm pretty sure it's a factory fretless. Here's the 1984 catalogue pic... The only differences are the p style knobs, which were probably changed by a previous owner. [attachment=171850:v812.jpg]

This is a great instrument. I played it a while back when I went round to Nick's to check out one of his uprights. It's punchy as hell and is one of the easiest playing basses i've ever picked up. Whoever buys this won't be disappointed!

Wish all companies would just use a serial system that you could work out easily!
