I've had a few unlined fretlesses (a Godin thinline acoustic, a Warwick Corvette 6, a Fender USA Jazz and my first one was a cheap Tanglewood P-bass copy) and all of them had fret markers at the fret position. I think lined fretlesses don't do it, but unlined fretlesses (in my experience) always do.

Yeah, I just don't like the idea of ripping off skint musicians. I remember pre-internet it wasn't possible to do that without getting a reputation as a shyster, so everybody pretty much trusted everybody else. Maybe today it's not always as clear-cut but it is for me.

If you win it you win it, but don't expect me to explain it to your better half! Honestly I don't want to make any money out of this, I'm just trying to recoup what I can without shitting on anyone.

I've picked it up a couple of times again tonight, it could be worse. The dot markers are gobsmackingly stupid, and if it wasn't for them I think I could probably get used to it. Structurally it's fine, if the neck is a bit chunky. In terms of attention to detail though I'd like to meet whoever put this through QC and introduce him to the blunt end of my Warwick.

Is it really that bad? I suppose it's rather subjective. Maybe I'm being a bit harsh because I had such a bad experience with the seller, and I'd already decided I didn't want it before it arrived. But then all the things I've said about it in here are true - it's not a well made bass by any stretch of the imagination.

It would probably play alright if it was set up properly, if you liked the shape of the neck (I don't). The B string is the funny bit - it actually feels good and I usually hate low B strings. The bass seems to be sound in terms of the neck joint and so on, but nothing else is right. Every time I look at it I see something else that looks really careless and rushed. They don't affect the way it plays but they just confound me totally.

I intend to be perfectly honest about it in the listing anyway, see if anyone wants it. Like you said, maybe someone's after a dirt-cheap 6, or maybe someone wants to scavenge it for parts, who knows. The saddles are quite cool and the tuners look like the ones on my old Godin, so maybe someone will want them.

The raffle idea is pretty funny, but I don't think you'd find 25 people here who'd want it. I suppose it is a fiver...

Nah, still don't think you'd find 25 people, and they'd all have to trust me to be fair about randomly picking a winner - I don't really know any of you lot yet. Good idea though.

Well I'm going to stick it on eBay and list it honestly, see what it goes for. God only knows I don't want it.

OK it just turned up in the post... Well, [i]a bass[/i] turned up, but it's the one with humbuckers, not soapbars - after all that they sent me the wrong ****ing one!

First impressions: Not great. Seems there wasn't a single corner left un-cut in the making of this bass. Maybe it would set up OK but frankly I can't be bothered. The finish on the body has a few spotty imperfections and there are some pinhead-sized dings around the neck joint, looks like some of the drilling might've been done after the finish went on judging by the raw look of the jack socket. There's no finish on the back of the neck either - nothing at all. Feels like playing a fencepost. I'm not helping to sell this thing am I?

On the positive side, the B string's actually not bad. That's all I've managed to find on the positive side. Well, structurally it's fine, and it balances alright on a strap too.

Ah screw it none of you were going to buy it anyway.

In all honesty I only bought this bass because a friend of mine bought a cheap fretless 5, and I wanted to get a 6 for less money than he paid for his 5. That friend has asked "Have you got your bass yet?" almost every day for the last five months, so you could say the plan backfired a bit!

Bought from a twattish German seller on eBay last year. After five months, two dozen emails, complaints to eBay and PayPal and a brief investigation by the Polizei in Hannover, it's finally on its way to me. In the meantime I've bought a fretless Stingray from a fellow Basschatter, so I don't want or need this bass. Currently it is in BRAND NEW CONDITION!, but I will probably open it when it arrives out of curiosity.

It's due to arrive on Friday according to the UPS tracking gizmo, looking for offers in the region of £100 from anyone who can collect it from me here in sunny York. I could ship it but I don't know what the costs would be (according to UPS it weighs 8.9kgs packed). If nobody's interested I'll stick it back on eBay and thoroughly enjoy writing lots of nasty remarks about the original seller into my item description.

Here's some info straight from the eBay description. This bass has some fantastic features that you will not find ANYWHERE ELSE:

Two key features to note here: Endless sustain is promised - not a figuratively-speaking endless sustain but literally [b]sustain that they promise does not end![/b] Also the body is made from "bassood", which sounds pretty exotic. I saw another bass they made out of "Basswod" which also sounded interesting. I was waiting for them to make one from "Asswood" but sadly that never happened.

This bass is so good that nobody even gives a toss about basic grammar any more.

It's passive, has two volume and two tone pots, 24-fret neck, rosewood board, 34" scale, weighs 4.9kgs, and as far as I know it looks like this:

I definitely don't try to do "everything" - I've no intention of being one of those anorak virtuosos at all - but I do still strive to improve at what I do do. I think once you become complacent about what you're playing then it's probably time to pack it in.

FWIW if you look on eBay you'll find used LMB-3s usually sell for about £40, so if you didn't want it you wouldn't lose more than a few quid when you sell it on.

It's actually a pretty good pedal BTW. Doesn't do that "fattening" thing that compressors are known for but it does keep your peaks under control without trashing your sound. I've got one on my board to rein in any crazy stunts some of my other pedals might try to pull.

My advice would be: Keep your Squier.

If you like your Squier (you appear to) and you don't know if other basses are good or not, then why switch? You said you don't have a lot of money, and you'll probably make a net loss trading your current bass for a different one, and potentially end up with one that you don't like as much as the one you just sold. Doesn't seem to make much sense to me!

Hang on to it for the time being, and go out and play every other bass that catches your eye and is affordable. Also play a few you can't afford, just to see if there's anything magically special about them that you think justifies their value. If nothing else it will give you some perspective on the cheaper instruments you're considering. When you find something that you definitely feel is a worthwhile step up from your Squier, that's the time to sell it.

There is some discussion of bypassing it at the switch [url="http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=315187"]here[/url], although the instructions are not idiot-proof-looking enough for me to have tried it myself yet. I'd rather do this than bypass it with a looper pedal (which is what I'm doing now) because of the reasons you mentioned - I have giant EHX pedal footprints eating all of my board, and babysitting them with loopers just makes things worse.

As for the low output level - are you sure you've got the preamp trimpot tweaked correctly? It's a pain to adjust it but if you get it just-so I find the levels are alright if you have at least one slider maxed.

FTR I ordered a fretless 6 for £79, purely because a friend of mine found a fretless 5 for £89 and I wanted to get 1 more string for less money than he paid. It wasn't about quality at all, it was purely a willy-waving exercise.

Every time he calls me now the first thing he says is "Have you got your bass yet?". I hung up on him yesterday when he did it.

Try dropping out for a few bars, then coming back in. That's the easiest way to help people appreciate what the bass does. Plus you get time for a suck on your lemonade.

Ah yeah. No worries. I've got to visit someone who knows what he's doing to get some work done on another bass anyway so I'll bring this one along with me.
