1. FTR I have the same issue with my Stingray and the dimmers in my house. I'm pretty sure there's no earthing issue on the bass because it doesn't buzz anywhere but at home.

It's annoying though, because I can't record with the thing at home. :)

  2.
... but Andrew levy (brand new heavies) used them, also he had streamer 5 strings ...
Really? I never saw him playing anything but P basses.

Stefan Lessard from Dave Matthews Band also used to swing a Dolphin - it's all over their debut album.

  3. There aren't any "traditional"-style basses that look sensible as a five string IMHO - they either look naff and weird or they look modern as a consequence of the fatter neck. I would go with the suggestion above of the L2500, just because it's the most versatile bass you can buy. They're very dull-looking though.

  4. When I was growing up there were two guys in my town who owned Wal basses, and they were both fretless. I think - as a result - for the last 15 years I've always assumed that "Wal" means "fretless".

I've wanted one for about that long, too, but I can't bring myself to spend so much money on a bass. It would be a walnut-faced Mach I, though, if I ever did buy one.

  5.
im only 15 and play in a church band.....lol
Maybe look at an octave pedal, or a chorus, something that adds a bit of body to the bass rather than transforms it. Stamping on a Big Muff and drowning everybody else out with lush fuzzy harmonics probably wouldn't go down too well in the middle of worship. :)

  6. I would stay away from any bass with a twisted neck, unless you're planning to replace it. AFAIK Ernie Ball will sell you a replacement neck if you send them the knackered one, not sure if you can get any third-party necks for a Sterling but if a Stingray neck will fit it you could get a graphite replacement from Status for £300.

You asked how many of us play metal. I didn't want you to get the impression that we all do (or even would :)).

    ...

how would users link these in the chain ?
Personally:

    EHX octave multiplexer
    EHX bass micro synth
    qtron
    EHX black finger compressor
    Pickle Pie fuzz
    Wah
    Boss Bass EQ
    EHX stereo electric mistress
    Boss Bass chorus
    Line6 DL4 delay modeller

Again, not sure what I'd do with the EQ. Compressor before fuzz to avoid compressing fuzz, fuzz before wah but after q-tron so you've got envelope options both before and after the fuzz, octave-tracking devices at the start.

And I'd stick that BMS (at least) in a true-bypass loop if I were you.

  9.
It's a great octave, isn't it? especially with two octaves down! I bought an original one in the eighties, brand new as my first ever effects pedal and sold it a couple of years ago for well over £100. I'm glad to hear MI Audio are doing a clone, I might look at it (though I guess it's not cheap in itself)
One went on eBay yesterday for £50-ish. Was considering having it myself but fell asleep...

  10.
Amongst the "famous users" cited as having one of these is Hui-Chieh Chien ... wonderfully described as an Over Top Musican.

That's what I want to be when I grow up.
Fantastic!

Who wouldn't want that next to their name on the album credits.

  11. My main bass is a Thumb 4. It's a nice old one (91), I don't know if the newer ones are any different.

The neck profile is a bit... unconventional, I agree. But not in a bad way IMO. It has more depth to it, somewhere to put your thumb. Maybe they're better suited to players with longer fingers.

I had a Corvette Proline 6 a few years back, that was a bolt-on made in whatever year they started making them (guessing by the two-digit serial number), and I really liked the neck on that, too. It's still the only 6 I've played that felt immediately natural when I first picked it up, but to be fair I don't make a habit of picking up 6-string basses.

Horses for courses and all that, but I really like them. I was thinking about buying another one about an hour ago. :)

  12.
During the audition, check out the drummer.
If you click with the drummer the gig's probably yours. So if you want the gig, talk to the drummer a lot and really pay attention to him when you're playing - chances are nobody else in the band does, so he'll be keen to have you back. :)

  13.
John Turner is a very nice chap too. Helped me choose my Conklin 7 string way back when.

It's always nice to see the ERB bashing is alive and well :)
I'm not doubting that he's a nice guy, but if he'd spent a few grand on a really ostentatious hat I'd take the piss out of that, too. It just so happens that in this case it's a bass guitar.

Maybe it sounds nice, I don't know, I just don't like the look of it. I suppose when you pay for a bespoke guitar the chances are you're the only person who'll like the way it looks, unless you happen to have excellent taste.
