1. Ignore all these anti slappers matey,if you want to learn slap bass you will need to be into slappy music its as simple as that.Get hold of some brothers johnson and as much obscure funky 70s/80s soul /jazz/funk as you can, listen to anything thats makes you want to groove. However its pointless trying to master a technique if you are not into that type of music.Technique wise its best really to try and develop your own style,if you get into the habit of tapping your thumb and finger (like a bass and snare) on the table then transfer this over to the bass, slap and pop is a bit like playing drums on the bass, also try to keep your hands relaxed so you get a nice snapping action in your wrist, choose simple repetative patterns at first, you will soon be able to open up a barrage. Its worth learning and a brilliant party trick, plus you can blow away annoying lead guitarists,(drummers will love you aswell).

  2. I think a lot of people who slag off slap cant actually do it properly as the funk technique it is designed to be used as (ie larry graham/louis johnson). A lot of slap players i see tend to push the strings or play to many notes and forget about leaving space in there lines allowing the funk to breathe.Good danceble funk comes from the brain anticipating timed beats and pops.I love it and its a great knicker dropper at partys.I think claypool sounds and acts a bit like zappa but hes not as clever, however his bass lines are interesting and a break from the norm.

  3. i have seen michelle ndnedgsgsgsgceollo using one of those les paul basses befor,i dont think they look very funky though,Zender writes very good basslines i think there first album is the best music of the mind, and blow your mind were well fluffy.he also has the same birthday as me which i was quite pleased about.

  4. I was 3 when disco happened and feel like an unkool freaky outcast when i tell people im a disco junky,(how come so many people dance to it but pretend its crap?) surely disco had the best bass players technique wise,i love rock players (john paul jones) reggae (aston) and all the other boys but im starting to think 70s dance/disco gets a pretty snobby/raw deal response a lot of the time....anyone with me on this, whats wrong with music that makes people feel good.

  5.
I'm currently on a music tech course at college and i'd quite like a small setup at home just to play about with and to record/mix my band with, i know all the practice and stuff, but nobody really told us what we'd need and how to do it if we were to make our own little home studio.

I have a computer with cubase on it, if i bought a smallish mixer with a USB output on it, such as this maybe, would i be able to plug that straight into my computer and have it communicate with cubase, or would i need some sort of audio interface?

I'm also planning on getting a pair of cheapish active studio monitors, i'm assuming i can just plug them straight into the desk or something?

I'll get some mics for it later (anybody know if the shure sm48s or PG58s and 57s are any good as a cheap alternative to the SM58s and 57s?) as at the moment i can DI my bass amp, or borrow some mics off friends, but mainly at the moment i'll concentrate on mixing.

thanks in advance for any advice, and sorry if this is in the wrong place, feel free to move it.
My samson audio monitors were cheap and sound excellent, they are also built like tanks, they won an award in future music,i thing they sound better than my mates expensive tannoys.

  6.
Hmmm... I would've said that all modern (popular) music stems from Ragtime & Blues forms. The traditional dixieland jazz was directly descended from ragtime as well.
Scott joplin rules! didnt he do the music for bullseye as well.

  7. Why are so many Mark King bashers about, and why do people not realise what a fantastic decade the 80s was for bass guitar.I was still a stupid young kid in 1989,nostalgia aside does anybody agree with me?

  8. Its your preamp gain set to high, if you have a look in the control cavity there should be a thing that looks like a little box on top of the circuit board (sorry this is the best way i can describe the gain resistor to you)On top of the little box thingy look for a round screw type thing,if you can turn this with a screwdriver anti clockwise (carefully) it will turn down the gain on most pre amps. Hope this is some help and if you dont feel confident doing it take it to a guitar shop,or someone who knows a bit about electronics.Unfortunately i have never seen in the back of your bass but most pre amps are fairly similar.

  9. Hello folks i really need a marcus miller fender jazz so i am now reducing the price of my Warwick streamer stage 1 to 580 pounds minus postage. The bass is in excellent condition and has completely unworn gold hardware.I am also up for swaps. Please email if anyone is interested [email protected].

    Cheers Mark.

  10. make your own stuff! love listening and i think its very important to do this.Sometimes i listen to my favorite players with my bass next to me and any little sexy riffs or techniqes that happen on the record ill try and copy.the main thing is dont limit yourself just let your mind open onto the fretboard! anyhow it works for me just an opinion.

  11. name of the games a good bass line by gunnerson he used those hagstrom basses i think sweden is a pretty good country for funky experimental music, they seem to dig there own thing there, its expensive to visit though.

  12. yeah i know he played bc rich there a quality bass,i just dont like the really pointy ones,to be honest i think someone with that amount of natural rythm could make any bass sound half decent,i know john taylor inherited his stingray, what a nice thing to own a bass that started a whole new genre.I wander if he ever gets it out and plays we are family hahaahhahaa im a disco junky those session bass players in the 70s could really play, and freddy washington on forget me nots is just brilliant.

  13. That sound he had was amazing but im pretty sure that is down to his muting technique,i started trying to copy the way he drags lightly over then plucks hard on the end of his fingers, its such a smooth sound, nile rogers is a fantastic guitarist and they were both excellent producers.

  14. Can anyone give me any info about bernard edwards the guy who did all the disco stuff with chic.I think this guy is so underrated, his lines are just so fluid and tight,i can find little about him on the web no interviews or anything.Wikipedia doesnt really have much about him i know he used stingrays and spectors.
