  1. Are you looking for a portable bass? As stated these smaller ones will have less volume than a standard size double bass.

If you are wanting portability the Chadwick Folding bass is a winner. Lots of reviews and accolades.

Put it this way, its not perfect, but its definitely a step up from my previous heads. I

I don't remember if you had used a GK MB800 with the F112 (the setup I use). Seems a good match. I nearly went for a Quilter from all the hype but have stuck with the GK. Glad there is another alternative out there to use with the F112.

Subjectively, I feel more relaxed when playing through this cab. I play in a fairly loud band with the kick drum through the PA but have never felt that I’ve pushed it close to its limits.

This is how I felt too when I started using a Fearless F112. You're not stuck with the sound of the cab, you can make it sound like just about anything you like. Using a HX Stomp with the F112 is like heaven :)

Berg CN212 vs Fearless F112 (brief shootout comparison)

The Fearless seems to be jumping through home use hurdles fairly effortlessly. Given its quality in terms of mid punch range, I can't see it being anything other than excellent in a band mix - will report back once I've had a chance to put it through its paces with a full rock band.

I played a gig last night and didn't "need" to bring my rig (F112/GBMB800/HXStomp) Using their Ampeg SVT PR4/HLF410, it was instant regret not having my setup. The Ampeg was so mucky and booming sounding on stage, with no end of twiddling, and I couldn't hear myself all night until I asked the sound man to put some bass in my monitor...lol. If I had my rig it would have been full, clear bass all night.

  6. I used my 1025 for it's first recording session today. The engineer was remarking on how modern it sounded and it wasn't until I heard the first track played back that I understood what he meant. Even just using the P,  it had a less vintage quality to it than I thought. I played a track with an old Tokai P with cruddy dead strings which sounded more old school. I still preferred the Yammy for playability and tone though.

I gig with it, with a compressor and its excellent. Used to use a Cali76 but sold it once I had run this a few times. Great bit of kit

I set up some patches that have compression at the beginning and again at the end and then use the foot switches for cabs or effects. The compressors seem quite good. Here is an example of what I use. The foot switches turn on cabs for old school colour and a eq boosts. It's easy to hit 6 blocks though.

  8. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that a HPF does affect the sound more than you might think. I have a Thumpinator and I get different results with it in the signal chain from passive and active instruments, and I think it's  more a phase issue than any thing else? My bass with EMG pickups loves the Thumpinator more than  my passive instruments. I practice with headphones most of the time and notice quite a tone difference with and without the HPF. I also have a HX Stomp and notice similar tone differences when I employ an HPF with the eq blocks. When I run a pedal board with the HPF into a GK MB800 and Fearless F112, I can also hear a difference. So although a HPF should just cut the stuff we can't hear, I think it can affect the tone more than we realise. So much so that I've taken the Thumpinator out of the chain.

I'd be interested to hear other's experiences with HPF's in their chain, both through amps and headphones.

  9. Like BigRedX, I've sculpted a sound from a pedal board that I want to be heard. The stage rig is usually 1 Fearless F112 into the power section of an amp. I've had compliments from both stage and PA tone so I know it works well for both. Sound men are pleased because it's very little work on their side as I even use my own DI.

  10. Harry kindly sold me his HX Stomp and delivered it locally. It was great to meet face to face, have a coffee and a good chat about bass and music. Very easy to deal with and a great chap. Thanks again.

Good explanation. As a jazzer I’d certainly like to get down to Eb, not too bothered about the lower notes. I wonder whether those extensions are more prone to damage with regular gigs.

One further thought: my perception is that extensions are favoured in UK orchestras while in Europe (whoops) five stringers are the norm. I could be wrong.

Hipshot makes a drop D thingy for double bass @bassace. Looks cool.

  12. I pulled this info from a talkbass thread about making these. I'l be constructing one soon too. :)

    The 2 x 8s are 21 1/4", the 2 x 10s are 10 5/16" with a 38 degree bevel ripped on most of the inside face and the 2 x 4 is 10 5/16" with a 1 1/2" hole in the centre.
The end pieces were propped up on the other 2 x 8 to raise them 1 1/2" while I screwed the front on. The 2 x 4 endpin holder was likewise raised 1 1/2".

For the dowel stand, The 1"x8"'s are 2' long and the 4 pieces of closet hanger dowel are 1' long.
