1. Ooops - error. I meant to post this as a reply to the "G&L Thread" topic, but got confused and ended up posting it as a new topic. Plonker. Mods - feel free to move it if you want. Steve
 2. I've recently acquired this black L2000 (USA) body + ASAT neck hybrid. ASAT maple neck is dated 1997. Rosewood fingerboard. Heavy USA body is solid swamp ash, deep visible grain and 3-bolt micro-tilt under replacement 6-bolt neckplate. Neckplate has code B000679 which dates it to 1979?? However, no visible date stamp in neck pocket. Tone? Blimey - Rich, deep and full, or what!? I'm getting old shoe leather and chocolate with hints of licorice and berry fruits. Needs careful playing because you only have to look at it and it rings out on its own. It needs careful string muting, and soft and precise fretting to prevent note overlap/muddiness. Sustains for ever. Tone = 9.5/10. Playability = 7/10 I also have a L2000 Tribute which has an altogether brighter tone which can cut through a mix a bit better than the richness of the ASAT/L2000 monster - depends on the venue/band mix. Lighter weight too. Steve
 3. Folks, My band is based in Rossendale, Lancashire. But I live in Stockport. We've been going down well in the North Manchester and Lancashire pubs and clubs and we're now looking for good pub and club venues in south and east Manchester. We play the usual mix of crowd-pleasers from U2, Queen, Pink, Fleetwood Mac, Keane etc. Before I get out there with my laptop, posters and website I'm just trying to find out what are the best-regarded venues so we don't end up in dives... All suggestions gratefully received, Steve
 4. Here you are: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1983-Westone-Raider-...=item3cb07c8e0a Good grief.
 5.
Yep - I'm getting some persistent humming. I'm off to the tech this morning to have a full set-up done, so I'll ask him to look into it. Thanks for your help, Steve
Guitar Tech reckoned that it may have been the copper shielding within the control cavity. Apparently, the seams of the copper sheets had come apart here and there and so were not grounding properly. Steve
 6.
If it's only this bass & you are using otherwise the same chain, then it's possibly(!) a poor connetion or loose earth wire in the internals of the bass. You'd need to open up the control space & have a look at the wiring & see if there's anything either obviously loose or maybe a dull (dry) solder joint. If you don't feel competent to do this then you'll need to take it to a tech. Do you get any other noise from this bass? Humming? Buzzing? G.
Yep - I'm getting some persistent humming. 7.
Usually a grounding issue. G.
What do I need to do to sort it out, please? It's intermittent - no voices this morning.
 8. When I switch my 1980 G&L L2000 to active, I get what sounds like a german radio coming out of the amp. It's actually quite loud and prevents me from using the bass in active (which isn't too much of a problem, to be fair.) Doesn't happen with my 2004 Tribute 2000. What's happening here folks? Steve
 9. I have a 2004 Tribute L2000 with 21st fret dot, and a 1997 ASAT-necked bass without the 21st fret dot.
 10. Seems like a bit of a bargain: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-G-L-L2000-TRIBUT...ents_Guitars_CV
 11. Ibanez ATK 300? There are 2 or 3 in the For Sale section for under £250. Also, G&L Tribute L2000. If you can stretch the budget a little, £350 should buy you a good used one: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/G-L-bass-guitar-L-20...=item41514e15a1 I have one and I use it in preference to my Fender USA P as my main gigging bass. 13. I emailed the seller asking for some more photos of the neck. His reply: "Hi I'm not taking anymore pics-sorry.I've had an overwhelming response to the ad and I'm currently in negotiations with someone to end the auction early, cheers" Steve
 14.
Right, I thought that might be the case. What is happening is when your bass is in passive mode, it is acting as a high impedance source. The following is from this source: Basically, the cable itself acts as a microphone, but only when connected to a high impedance at each end, ie your amp and passive bass. When your bass is in active mode, it effectively creates a low impedance at one end of the cable, thus reducing the effect to negligible levels -- hence why it only happens with your passive bass. As for why it only happens with that cable, it is entirely down to the construction of that cable. How old is the cable? Has it always done this?
Thank you for providing the explanation - and also for providing a translation of it! The faulty cable is now in the bin. I've ordered a new one. Steve
 15.
What length is the lead? S.P.
Both leads are 6m
 16.
Just tried making a "ghetto" version of this using a spare nylon strap in addition to the thick padded leather one I use normally- seems to be surprisingly effective, and my bass is a serious boat anchor. Thanks for the inspiration.
No problem! I like inspiring people!
 17.
Hi Steve, If no one else wants it, I would certainly appreciate it. I currently use 2 straps to get a similar result. Cheers, Steve.
Hi Steve, Looks like algmusic has bought a new strap. Pm sent to you. Steve
 18.
Do you use a passive bass?
It happens all the time with my passive Fender P (but only with the Van Damme/Neutrik lead). With my G&L, it only happens when the bass is switched to passive (again, only with the Van Damme/Neutrik lead). When the G&L is switched to active, I don't get the movement noise with either lead.
 19. I have one of these which I don't use: http://www.thomann.de/gb/planet_waves_50da...itarrengurt.htm It's not new and it does have 1 or 2 marks on it, but you're welcome to have it for the cost of postage. PM me if you're interested. Steve
 20. I have an expensive Van Damme cable + Neutrik connectors instrument lead. When I kick it out of the way during a song, you can hear the sound of its movement being amplified by the combo. My cheaper back-up lead is completely quiet in this respect. I'm puzzled - could somebody explain what's happening, please? Steve

 22.
How about a Roland D-bass combo: http://www.roland.com/products/en/D-BASS_115/ Light (22kgs), small (ish), powerful (330W), reliable, can easily extend with a D-bass 115x cabinet. I use one for all our small and medium pub and club gigs, only having to use the extension cab for audiences of more than 100 people. I was lucky - bought mine as an ex-demo model with warranty 2 years ago for £300, and they still do sell for this occasionally (Andertons, I think). On balance the tone seems to be a little more towards the bright rather than boomy end, (but that may be my playing style - I'm always told to turn up the bass tone no matter what guitar or amp I'm using). In any case, you just switch it to "Vintage" if you want boom-thud. If anybody wants to come round and try it out - just let me know. 24.
Wharfedale and db are also good shouts, I too would steer clear of the Class D stuff; it's probably fine for rehearsals and suchlike but the build quality isn't great and their reputation for reliability isn't very good. If you don't mind going secondhand, look at FBT, JBL Eons and maybe Studiomaster VPX / Studiospares Fortissimos as well (apparently the latter two are the same speaker with different badges).
Thanks for your advice. The band really wantes to buy new, and there's a pretty tight budget. So, I've ordered the Mackies.
 25.
we're using the mackie thumps and they seem okay so far
Aha! Mackie Thumps were also on our shortlist - can get a new pair including stands for £498. From people's comments about the Class D speakers, the Mackies are now right at the top of the shortlist.
