Mmm, not sure about this- just tried it out with this week in 1968 and (by my reckoning obvs) there are a fair few cracking singles in the top 30 , 19 in my view. Most of these by famous bands or artists, the word 'famous'  depending on your age though of course. Of the remaining 11 there are 9 fillers and 2 novelty maybe. To many people on here they are probably songs that are relatively unknown but nevertheless were big tunes then. Just saying....🙂

Yeah but it would be the same if you did it in another 50 years. They'd be big songs now, but would probably be relatively unknown in 2069.

  2. I've not done a lot of gigging, just a few pub gigs really. I'm very introverted, but I never minded playing in front of people - as the bassist I felt fairly 'hidden' in a way (even though the music we played had fairly prominent bass parts). I just find I don't have the energy for it now, I'm usually in bed before you might even start playing at a gig!

Writing and recording is definitely the part of being in a band I enjoyed the most.

Sick of hearing rappers whinge constantly. Just like I'm sick of hearing "young people" whinge. If you don't like it here sod off to somewhere else and whinge there otherwise deal with it.

I'm sure we'd never catch you whinging about anything...

  4. I'm a lefty. I originally started with a right handed guitar, and found it very slow to get anywhere. I got a left handed guitar after a while, and it felt much more comfortable, and I learnt a lot quicker. I do almost everything left handed, except using a mouse, and I think I use a knife and fork the right handed way. My brother writes left handed, but does a lot of stuff (including playing guitar/bass) right handed. Unfortunately I don't seem to have got the creative aspect of being left handed, despite how dominant my left hand is. I can play a right handed bass upside down pretty well though (well, not a lot worse than I can play a left handed bass, which isn't much above average). It's a bit of a 'party trick'.

The biggest barrier I have to getting on with Muse is that I've noticed Matt Bellamy's audible gasps for breath before every single line that he sings. Once you've noticed it, it's impossible not to notice it on EVERY SINGLE MUSE SONG.

    There.

I've just ruined Muse for the rest of you now as well.

I like Muse quite a bit (although not as much as I used to), and every now and then I sort of focus in on the gasping and it's all I can focus on.

A decent bass wah that works at a number of switchable frequencies, with a range of sweeps etc comparable to the best envelope followers including auto and manual at the same time. And with no annoying mechanical/electrical crackles that develop over time!

That does sound suitably difficult/high level! I'll have a look at that!

  7. Honestly, I don't mind. In terms of hardware I was thinking things like the b-blender or hipshot d tuner, but obviously I'd have to improve them somehow or make something new. Electrical wise could be pickups or stuff like that. The only thing I don't have any clue about is digital stuff and programming and things.

  8. Hello,

For my engineering apprenticeship HNC I have to do a project where I design and possibly make something and then present it at the end of the year. I was thinking of doing something music related, possibly a synth or effects pedal or something, but I'm not sure it really solves a problem like a lot of other peoples seem to. Are there any ideas people have, or problems they have, I could look into? Could be electrical or more mechanical/hardware related. Just any ideas at this point would be good.

  9. What's your favourite use of bass effects in existing songs? I could find a huge list of mine, but I think number one for me has to be Colin Greenwoods fuzz bass line in Exit Music. It's only in the last third of so of the song but it's a fantastic, stupidly fuzzy tone.
