  1. Hi, if you want a new D gut string in the unexplainable colour red, a true piece of American bass string history from nineteen-oatcakes...this is it... never fitted, never played, unvarnished real gut. A special and specialist string for sure.
  2. In fact, I’ll close this thread and open one just for the Artone red, which is easier.
  3. These are the Gerold Genssler Sonores boutique strings from I think 2016 (?). As you may know, a set of Gensslers is around €600, but that is for the wrapped gut version, whilst these are the synthetic wrapped. I bought them on this forum, apparently they were only on the original owner’s bass for a week and then changed because the owner had a C extension added to his bass. I have had them on my bass for a week (5 days of which I was actually abroad!!), so they are still brand new. I bought them for £180. Sound wise they have their own vibe: more responsive than gut and less sustaining than steel, with lower tension and the ability to make the bass sing with its own voice. Personally, after switching back from guts to steel, I wanted to try such a renowned string at a much lower price (I think even these were around €350 from the manufacturer). They sound amazing but for someone who never bows, I may as well stick to Spiro, which are easy to replace. There is no damage to the strings apart from slight fraying around the top silks (see Photos). any question please ask.
  4. All sold apart from the Artone red gut: nobody fancying a little piece of history? Make me an offer...
  5. Yes you can, pm me and it’s done. Thank you very much
  6. Gamut’s, Dlugolecki and Oliv are now SOLD PENDING PAYMENT. The brand new Chordas and the Artone red are still available, as are the Spiros
  7. Ok, I finally succumbed to my ethical dilemma in using gut strings and I am putting my collection for sale. so here goes Damian Dlugolecki G varnished - 4 months use - £50 (it’s the pure gut without the packet in the photos below) SOLD Gamut Lyon G - brand new - £80 SOLD Pirastro Chorda G - brand new - £70 SOLD Pirastro Oliv D - 4 months use - £50 (it’s the steel wrapped gut without packet in the photos below) SOLD Gamut Pistoy D - apparently days of use only (but never on my bass) - £60 SOLD Pirastro Chorda D - brand new - £80 SOLD Artone Red Gut D - this one is new-old-stock - unused but very old and a rarity indeed - a pure gut treated to be red (don’t ask me why) - £50
  8. Years ago I toured all over the U.K. with my bass in a Fiat Panda. All that close proximity and intimacy, with her neck resting on my shoulder whilst negotiating motorways and B roads made me develop a certain intimacy with my instrument. I’m not sure it resulted in me being a better player though, so I blamed her for it, said things I wish I didn’t say on a journey back from a remote Festival...so we split up after that, and I sold her.... get a bigger car, both you and your bass deserve some space!
  9. Hi Pete, I’ve always had guts, the Spiros were a short phase, but yes you very much would have to widen nut and bridge grooves and probably raise the action. It’s just a little bit of a bass and technique adjustment but if that’s your tone, I reckon it’s worth it. Very very subjective though. Some try guts and find them too dark/floppy/undefined/troublesome, etc... I see their point entirely, but they do it for me.
  10. Hi mate, ok here’s my impression: although technically the Stark E has more tension than the medium counterpart, when I swapped them, I didn’t feel much difference. Here’s my take on it: we tend to play the E string harder and less frequently, which is why it is common to find it “wimpy”. So, when I put the Stark E on, I just felt more volume, growl and responsiveness and no real tension difference. Great presence to hammer out a low F, F# or G and let it growl like a bear: awesome powerful feeling! Folk stand to attention (well, almost), However lately, my work is in quiet duos and trios, so I’ve been looking at going back to a softer sound on the E, still with the Spiro long life, so I put back on an ancient medium E I had lying around. The other strings remain Spiro medium A, Oliv D and Dlugolecki G at the moment. The one I used is sold, I have 2 brand new ones left. Hope this helps.
  11. The used one is now sold, so only the 2 new ones. I can’t change the price in the main listing sorry.
  12. Is your E string wimpy? These help a lot. Thomastik Spirocore need no introduction, but the “Stark” (heavy) tension version of the Spiros are rare to see. It helped my bass enormously to balance a weak sounding E string in my brief foray into steels (whilst the setup was already optimal). Now I am back to using my good old guts, a regular Spiro E is more balanced and I no longer need these heavy ones. I still have 1 x E strings brand new, £50 posted.
  13. I’ve had a couple of plys in the past with the same thing. One carved Wilfer also had it. The word from the luthier at the time I asked was not to worry about it, but you may want to double check for piece of mind.
  14. I’m not sure but I use almond oil for my guts, so it’s probably the same thing (maybe). For the low steels I just let the funk grow free...🤢
  15. Location added, sorry I had forgotten.
  16. A wonderfully ready for action plywood right here! Hofner is a quality brand of course. Still, this is a modern plywood: don’t expect royal philharmonic tones, but a truly delightful, sturdy professional instrument; perfectly at home in all the pub/club/village hall/festival/tour van gigs on the planet. That is exactly how I used it anyway. If I’m correct, and please double check, Thomann sells thes for £1900. However, the neck was not so good...and it required a luthier job worth £880!!! Now, it plays perfectly well indeed. I realise the Zappa & The Fonz stickers are not everyone’s cup of tea, but they come off; I have a special remover which leaves no mark on the varnish. at the price, I shall leave the bow quiver on. If you want I will throw in a beginner’s bow. I will also be happy to discuss a special price for the padded bag (worth £180), a fairly new set of Spirocore strings (currently £135) and a Realist copperhead pickup (around £170). This bass has been played and it has been played with some really great and well known musicians. Granted they were not double bass connoisseurs, but every time they and the audience have commented on the deep warm sound of this bass. I’m not trying to fool you into thinking this is a top class bass: I’m just saying it’s a damn fine sounding gigging plywood, which you can take out and enjoy without worrying about putting a scratch mark on it. I'm in Scotland. Not far from the Gla/Edi line, so I can meet you there if easier.
  17. Autumn here in Perthshire is amazing. Bit breezy but amazing... if you come here, drop some dosh off the price and buy a spare student plywood off me, it’s a deal!
  18. Thankfully for my bank balance you live so far away... Great players’ bass I bet!
