  2. Thanks for all the help ladies and gentlemen. You have total NOT helped (too many good suggestions). :dash1:
I think i hanker for the good old days when there was a choise of 2.

As part of my plan i've just shown my (Much) better half 3 basses.

    1. Wal mk3 5 string
    2. Fodera Emperor 5
    3. ACG Uber Recuve 5

The bass she liked best was...... the ACG (tried to make sure they all looked similar) and she did remind me we are not rolling in it....

I know this shows I'm tight, but it would bug me to buy a bass for a treat for my 50th, in the full knowledge that as I walk through the door it's value drops about 50%. For that reason I'd probably look out for a used bass I've always wanted.

Each to their own. Some get a kick out of the smell of new paint I guess.

Yep good point, means the risk of not liking the bass wouldn't cost lots of £££.

Have you played a WAL? Back then I wanted an Alembic so much.......than I got to play two and didn't like them......I bought a WAL mk1. Just saying, the bass you admire so much might not be so good when you play it, always check it out. Good luck with your search.

Very good point, especially after waiting so long

A pre-CBS precision is my holy grail. My friend's refinished '64 is the finest bass I've ever laid hands on. Maybe a Celinder P given the 2nd best bass I ever played was a Celinder Jazz (the Skarbee Celinder that was owned by a few guys on here over the years but has gone into hiding more recently).

Having owned a Wal (and played a few more) I'd suggest you speak to Alan at ACG... Much more flexible in terms of available options and, to me at least, a much more pleasing end result.

I have though about and ACG, i had a Finn 5 for a while and loved it. The purpose of the post was to test my resolve and i must admit that an Über ART Recurve 5 could topple the Wal. I think i would feel awkward sending Alan a picture of a Wal saying build me your version of this. Are there any basschatters who own both, what is your view on the ACG over a Wal?

  6. 50th Birthday arriving this summer, so i've decided to get get myself another bass.

Way back in 1989 i was in a music shop in Glasgow with only £500 and wished i had enough for a Wal selling for £800ish. That's an itch that hasn't gone away.
Well it's now 29 years later and i think that's enough dilly dallying . With that in mind i thought i would test my resolve by asking the gentlemen of this parish two things

    1. What would you buy yourself for a 50th birthday prezzy?
    2. What bass has always called out to you, but could never afford it?

    For me it's a 5 string Wal

  7. Well after a lot of sanding and cleaning i've decided to leave the bass with it's warwick finish.

I first cleaned the bass with Liberon wax remover then used 400 grit sandpaper, then wiped down the bass with Acetone. Then a round of 800 grit followed by 1200 wet and dry. After all that i decided just to re wax the bass. The bass looks and feels great. Thanks for all the advice.

From work in wood finishing; when we wanted to re-finish oiled wood with lacquer, both of the above are right.

I've always used white spirit to wash the wood with to remove as much of the oil as possible, then sand it down.

If anyone has ever used silicone spray polish then give up on day one. You won't ever be able to get rid of that successfuly.

Before starting though, what is the advantage of satin nitro that you want?

The benefit of oil finish is that any scratch or ding can be easily removed and repaired by sweating the dent out and sanding. Lacquer finish is far harder to repair.

The disadvantage of oil is dirty sweaty hands can stain the wood. I guess the choice is yours.

    I was thinking of a satin nitro for 2 reasons;

    1. Provide a harder outer shell, the maple neck is susceptible to small dings i thought that the niro may provide a harder skin making it a bit more resistant.
    2. Its long lasting.

I think i'll follow your recommendations, i'll get some liberion wax remover, use it and white spirits and a fair amount of elbow grease and make an assessment once that's finished.

I have to say that 2 local (professional) luthiers close to me both refused to refinish a Warwick that I had (SSI waxed) as there was no guarantee you could leech all of the oil/wax out and if you didn't then it could react badly with the paint causing flaking etc.

If you are prepared to sand/strip back several mm of wood from the front and back it may work but they indicated that the wax/oil if applied regularly penetrates quite deep, especially on an old bass.

One final question is your bass a wax finish from new or possibly one of the coated ones which some people mistakenly wax?

    Good luck either way.

Its a 5 string 2010 LTD corvette, so it was a wax finish.

  10. Any advice from you luthiers out there would be great.

I picked up a Warwick bass on Gumtree  a few months ago that i'd like to refinish, last guy used oil to seal then wax on top. I'd like to refinish with a satin nitro. Any advice on chemicals to use to get rid of oil and wax.

Elbow grease and sanding would be first stage, then i though Acetone might lift any residual oil.

Hi - well on mine (which is the earlier 100W tweeter version rather than the current 300W tweeter version). If I switch it on, with nothing plugged in, I can hear the fan and a clear hiss from the tweeter. Neither of which (I guess as expected!) are impacted by dialling the volume and EQ right down. The cab is pretty much the 121H on this model so what I'm getting is in line with your 121H.

I think @molan also has one, but I suspect it may be the earlier version too.

    Hope that helps.

With the same setting as you (vol, eq =0), i can hear no hiss just the fan. Damn.

  12. I have a question i hope someone can answer, i've just bought a new Markbass Combo 121 Lite and i'm surprised at NO hiss coming from the tweeter. If fact i'm not sure i can hear anything coming from the tweeter.

I have a CMD 121H which has an obvious hiss, so i suspected this amp would have some. So the question is to anyone out there with this amp, is there any hiss from the tweeter?
