It's definitely an excellent guitar. I sold them for a while too when I worked at a music shop. Gould doesn't have the same prestige as other brands, with good reason, but I can't fault the quality of this guitar. I had even forgotten that the pickup surround has an in-built Schaller tuner. Needs a battery, mind you, but... WOW! Don't see things like that on guitars 10 times the price.

I've been having a bit of a clear out, and I've found this set of ProSteels which are now surplus to requirements as I've sold my good bass... foolishly with a new set of Elixirs on it, so that guy definitely won't need strings for a while!

So here we have D'Addario ProSteels, 45-105 long scale. We all know these strings, I don't think they need much introduction. They're brand new, unopened, and you can even see the price I paid for them (£21.95), so you pay £7 less than I did. I can even post them, which might be £1-£2, but still a bargain at that price.

This beautiful swamp ash Jazz copy is delightful. With the clear lacquer with slight amber hue, it really does call back to the 70s jazz bass models that are so iconic. Standard jazz setup - Single coil pickups in bridge and neck positions, BBOT bridge, maple fretboard with MOP inlays, high gloss lacquer, nice low action with classic jazz neck profile. Unsure of nut material, guessing plastic. Nice machine heads with no stickiness, definitely holds its tune well! Skunk-stripe neck, 3-bolt neck plate. Never gigged, and in fantastic condition. Recently strung with Elixirs. A lovely instrument for the money. I've owned it since new, just a few years old. Very little use. Speaking to a friend that owns a music shop, the retail price of these has risen steadily over the last few years, owing to a number of factors, and they're now at the £220 new mark. Grab yourself one that's as good as new for a lot less!

This lovely Gould Les Paul copy mimics the classic by Gibson. With dual humbuckers in the bridge and neck positions, tone and volume controls for each pickup, and the famous treble switch. It features all chrome hardware, with glass black finish and "ivory" binding. It's currently strung with D'Addario chrome flat wound strings, which give a great classic sound with lots of depth. In pristine condition - never gigged. I've had this guitar from new and have only played it a handful of times and put the flats on it as an experiment - found out it sounded great with them!

Lovely Yamaha ERG 121C in black. This guitar features dual humbuckers, in the neck and bridge positions, with a single coil in the middle. Whammy bridge, but whammy bar is missing. I had this guitar set up 6-7 years ago, and it has seen very little use since. It's a lovely playing guitar, and would really suit a beginner due to its low action and easy playability, or somebody more experienced looking for a fast-playing guitar. In good condition, with a few chips in the paintwork.

I'm selling my Ashdown ABM400H head unit. This is a very early model from Ashdown's history, and was originally a rack mounted head, but the rack ears are now missing. I've had the amp for about 10 years, and I used it with a home-built bass cab, both of which I obtained from another forum user. It's a great little amp, I used it at many practices over a period of years, but unfortunately, much like the SWR, it has sat unused for a number of years now in the spare room.

It features a valve preamp, with post-preamp DI on the face, an effects loop on the back. Delivering 400 Watts of warm bass, middy-burbles, and clear highs. The EQ on the front really couldn't offer much more in the way of allowing you to dial in whatever sound you like, effectively having high and low pass filters, with the frequency-specific faders, and a 3-band EQ. Unfortunately I can't offer a demo for this one, but I'm more than happy to have the performance of the amp validated by a professional prior to completion of sale.

The case and carry strap will be included with the sale, however it seems the kettle lead is no longer in the box. I can seek to get one prior to completion of sale too at your request.

Hi all, I'm selling my SWR Silverado combo, with 4x8" speakers with tweeter. I've had this amp for about 7-8 years, and unfortunately it hasn't had the use it deserves, and for the last few years it has been in the spare room. I'm in the process of buying a house, and not only will I not have space for this, I would like to use the money to fund moving, so, unfortunately (or fortunately, from the amp's perspective?) it must find a better home.

This is a fantastic amp, and I used it around the house a few times before it went into the spare room. It has a great, tight delivery, with even response across the range, and no boominess. I intend to upload a demo and pictures in the next day or 2 and more information. In the meantime, this will be a placeholder, and any interested parties should respond here or send me a message with any questions.

Takes away the capital expenditure needed on high value, low margin, low turn goods, keeps people, like a lot of us, who just use the shops for strings and set-ups happy and takes advantage of the buoyant used market. It would also have the advantage of having a variety of different instruments coming through the door at any given time, which might encourage people through the door more regularly.

Yes, this does seem to be "the way", but I also agree with Dad that it's hard to scrape together a successful business let alone a comfortable earning from selling strings alone, but keeping the capital investment low and stock turnover high is certainly a better way to do business.

That's really weird! ProMark are distributed by D'Addario, so anywhere stocking D'Addario strings can easily get ProMark sticks in!

Having been in retail myself (newsagents) I really don't know how music shops make money, I suspect most of them are labours of love

I think a lot of shop owners barely scrape together a living. The margins are quite good, but nothing in a music shop is really FMCG. The fastest moving thing would be guitar strings, and some places might only sell a few a day or even a week!

That's why I said in my blog that it was important for all high street retail to compete in the online world, but back it up with real-world friendly faces.

I agree. Small shops in small towns generally cater for the entry-level musician mostly. A good shop should nurture and build those relationships so that when little Johnny tells mummy and daddy that he wants a cool electric guitar and a big amp, they'll come back to the small shop for their input.

True. It's difficult to cater to everyone, particularly at the higher end of the market. A shop can speculate on being able to sell high ticket items, but that ties up their cash in an item that could take years to shift.

There's been some talk about amps too. Hardest thing to sell in a music shop, for some reason. There's a small shop in Ballymoney, and they have a ton of high end amps. I would say "I don't know how they haven't gone out of business", but from what I can gather, music lessons are keeping the shop afloat.

The best approach for businesses and customers is to have a solid relationship, and whenever you need something, give them a call and get a price from them.

I agree...both the shops I mentioned had told me that they didn't have the item I was trying to buy in stock because "there is no demand" ...errr, why am I trying to buy it then? Maybe if they stocked what I wanted they might get more of my money...

Just because you want to buy something, that doesn't mean there is demand sufficient enough to hold a stock of that particular item.

I'm genuinely curious, because it's been mentioned a few times in this thread - Is depreciation really that big a factor in your decision to purchase a new bit of kit?

Typically the way I view something like a guitar or a bass is that it's a hobby of mine, and the market value of my gear through the years is largely irrelevant, as I'm probably not going to sell it, and I don't mind spending a bit of money on something that improves my quality of life. Of course, I could get it cheaper on the second hand market, but sometimes it's nice just to have something that's truly yours, no?

Am I just a neurotic fool? 😂

I've never considered the second hand value of equipment when purchasing it new.

Or, more kindly and to the point (I, too, am old..!), for now you have the choice. For an increasing number, here in the UK and Europe at least, that choice is fast dwindling, soon to vanish. Buy now, whilst you still can..!
