Sorry - I couldn't leave this one languishing in the Recordings forum - this is rather funky even if I say so myself - a live cut from my gig at the Spice Of Life in Soho a couple of weeks ago with my funk band Groove Digger and very fine alto sax man Simon Willescroft of Duran Duran/Incognito fame - hope you enjoy:

    GREAT alto player man!

  2. Hey Ben,

I've had 4 EBS heads in my time playing & two of them were Fafners.

The reason people who want that really bright sound use EBS is because it does superbly, but that doesn't mean that's all it does in anyway.

Lee Pomeroy (Take That's bassist) was using the new Fafner & Reidmar last time i checked & he doesn't have the really bright tone.

The valve preamp in it can bring some great warmth and character to your sound.

If you get chance or find one locally, go try it out and make up your own mind.

It's definitely one of/if not my favourite EBS head & i'd still have one if i had a car.

I think it's this point that's rattling round my brain. I work hard at keeping my equipment simple. The guitarist (and, increasingly the singers) seem to enjoy using effects for the hell of it, and then get into time-consuming trouble with equipment problems. "Why don't you use some effects, Steve?" Because I don't feel I need to, I don't like the complexity they bring, I don't understand them and they seem to distract you guys a lot of the time. I'm not going to change my approach that much and neither are the rest of the band. So, I guess it's time for me to think about whether it's the right band for me.

This morning, I can't stop playing this: Love the stripped-down, less-is-more vibe. It's so different from the loud, two over-driven effects-laden guitars, women singers using effects to sound like men (why?), can't hear yourself think, all-instruments-should-be-miced, let's play this no matter whether the audience might like it, approach I've been battling with recently.

Wow, thanks man, glad you enjoy it! :)

With regards to pedals, if they all get used & YOU want to use them and they make a difference in sounds to you, forget what anyone else says.

Personally on my board i have a tuner, an EBS micro bass, Thumpinator, a volume pedal & a stereo di for my synth.

If i didn't play keyboards as well i'd probably have a much bigger board with synths & octave pedals on it but i don't need them.

I played a cover of Man In The Mirror last month & i'm sorry Pietruszka but playing that song without a synth sound be it on bass or on keyboards, people would notice.

Subtle dirt on bass does make a difference to the whole tonality and texture of a piece if that is what's required for it. You don't need to have conversations about it to make it be deemed important.

  4. Picked up a mini Polytune yesterday and it's fantastic!! The size is amazing, the tracking is so much quicker than my previous DT10 and it looks as cool as you can get. At £65 i think its by far the best tuner out there at the moment for price.

I don't believe Peterson tuners are worth the hefty price tag, a mixture of a standard tuner and your ear are equally as good IMO.

Of course if you make a living setting up basses and need the maximum accuracy for intonation or record in the studio every day i'd go for the polytune.

Sounds like bollocks to me. Poor planning and execution. I'm sorry but if you want to make a business of social media, you better get your sh*t together and offer some advantages and interaction. You can't engage then disengage because you're a bit busy, you'll lose your audience and trust so quickly.

Don't shoot the messenger guys. I was just mentioning that i've made him aware of the questions being said and he will be coming back to answer them.

  6. I spoke to Nick today guys and he's going to come back and look over this thread. He's been really busy and mentioned that he'd like users to email iBass directly about any queries or upsets as he doesn't log into this site every week like a lot of us.

I'm struggling a bit and hoping someone can describe this a bit better for me.

We play a few tunes where the guitarists won't play the correct chord voicings. In most cases they've downloaded something from ultimate tab or wherever and aren't using their ears and comparing the tab go the original tune.

I know that Bb/D is just the first inversion and can explain that to them but any ideas how to get them not to play the bottom Bb on a Bb/C. Is there a better musical term other than Bb with a C bass.

Should I just break their fingers everytime they play the wrong chord?
This really depends on your band set up & whether the guitars playing by itself or your playing at the same time.

If your both playing, you're in charge of the inversions, so they don't have to worry too much about the inversion.

There's other ways of explaining them if you know your theory and know the a different name of a chord for the notes in question. (that makes sense in my head but might not come across clearly)

Theres no simpler way then saying as its written though, Bb over D will be simplest by saying Bb with a D in the bass, unless they're clued up on their theory. But i guess they're not otherwise you wouldn't be in this situation.

Great line. Always easier to read than you think because, once you get the pattern down, there is a lot repetition and the fills tend to be 'a la mode'. Great fun.

Yeah it's great fun to play, I'm having to do it for a final recital in uni.

Here's the head if anyone wants it.

can you use the forscore app if you aren't connected to the internet (3g or wireless)?
Yeah, you drag & drop you pdf's into the app when connected to iTunes.

I've never used it for anything online?

Been to Jam sessions where guitarists have used charts on i-phones....!
It's a lot different using a chord chart on an iPhone and trying the read sheet music on one.
