I was at a professional jazz gig last night, superb bass player beset by a boomy acoustic.  I think it was because the room was a bit echoey and they'd put him  and his coda combo in a corner, those codas sound great but are deliberately omnidirectional.   Room placement seems critical.

I'm surprised you get affected by PA speakers, aren't they usually out front firing forwards?  I don't like them either from an audience pov because the sounds no longer come from the individual instruments, but it's never bothered me when standing at the back.  I only really hear the sound from my amp (it's a pjb flight case which has a couple of upfiring speakers) and feel the vibrations from the bass itself.

That pjb sounds interesting. I didn't know they had speakers facing up. Now I have more GAS

    Is this it? https://philjonesbass.net/cms/index.php/product_bg-800/

The PA systems I play through, albeit not that often it has to be said, are usually small and pretty close to the band. I can usually hear the sound from the PA which seems to suck all the life out of my setup. More volume and a better angle into my ear is the solution but not always possible.

One thing I have found is that when I place my cab on top of another cab, it doesn't lose as much low end as a stand or chair. I have considered taking a second cab just for use as a stand. (sounds crazy I know)

Hi Adrian I don't know if Chard is too far deep into Somerset for you but we have been wondering if our 110T might be useful to upright players, and I might have other solutions for you too. I've been looking for someone to try our cabs with DB so if you fancied driving across you'd be welcome to try the BC cab, I could probably get one of our BC 12's up here too.

You'd be helping me too, amplifying DB poses a number of technical and musical challenges so talking through things with a proper bassist would be a great way to spend an hour or two :)

Hi, that sounds interesting. Yes I could pop over sometime, although busy in the near future. I'll pm you, thanks

The airy woody overtones that distinguish the DB are easily messed up by destructive interference from dual cabs. They also don't come back from the front PA to you nearly as well as the low bass. You'd be a candidate for IEM.

Otherwise you definitely need to point your one cab directly at your head.

Thanks, I suspected as much. Every time I hook up a second cab, the sound gets worse, and every time I hook up to a PA it is even worse again, sometimes impossible to hear myself. I don't want to over complicate my setup with IEM but it would certainly solve the issue, I agree.

  4. Hi Basstone

thanks for replying. much appreciated When I use the ea combo it is with a matched ea cab. It just sounds overblown and lacks the clarity of a single cab. Sounds awesome with electric though

i am looking at getting a 1x12 but would really like an extreme tilt up if possible but never figure out how to do that. I had some success just putting my old gk combo on its back

most gigs have a lack of space for good position of amp

the issue I have with a pa is that I cannot deal with hearing my sound coming out from somewhere that my bass is not, if that makes sense

to be fair I am a happy bass player. Just putting some thoughts out there really

  5. I am interested to hear your experience.

I play db through an EA micro head through an EA 1x10 with Rev solo pu. Jazz gigs mainly. I also have an EA combo and a gk combo and both sound great

I prefer playing through a single 10 inch cab. When I add a second cab to gain volume it sounds worse to my ears. I owned a 2x10 cab once and hated it

I can’t stand being connected to a PA system of any kind as I hear the sound from the PA and not my cab or bass. Only good if the sound engineer gives me a good monitor mix.

if I can’t hear the acoustic character of my bass then I play worse and feel detached from the music being played. This happens in around 30% of the gigs I play. This leads to GAS

i have to keep my cab on the floor to get a sound. Tried it on chairs or stands and lacks bass. Amp position is usually near my feet so works in quite venues but not in loud ones  I have tried adding small wedge monitor but this makes it sound worse

there ends my little therapy session for the day

  6. I purchased the stentor bag and am very pleased with it. Slightly too big around the shoulders but great quality and lots of useful handles

I have found that if I keep a Velcro cable tie on the bottom handle, I can roll the bag up for easy stashing behind the drummer 😀👍

  7. I had a play in the bass this morning and fitted an old obligato g string as the thomastik was too bright. It has been a while since this bass has been played so I was happy to see it still sounds good and plays easily. Nice bright sound with some bite. Even tone and great fingerboard.

The E is a spiro mittel. Feels ok but not as bright as other strings . I have some old velvet strings that could sound awesome on this bass so I may try them soon

the g string is noticeably lower than the others but still good to play. I would happily take this out on a gig if I didn’t have another bass.

photos include close up of the crack in the back. Visible but glued and not rattling. I recorded a video to but only on my phone so it isn’t the best quality

  8. Thanks for your input Maude.

I just searched reviews on the Stentor bag and found that I posted something here about buying a cheap bag way back in 2012. Totally forgot

Just shows how bad my memory is and how little I need a decent bag I guess. My one could even last another few years with gaffer tape 🙂

  9. Hi

My cheap bass bag has come to the end of it's life, so I am looking for another one. I really need something that will protect well enough but will also be easy to roll up and pack behind a drummer. I shift my own bass from car to venue and have never felt the need to have a 'proper' top quality heavy bass bag. It would be good to have side and front handles and zip from the side too.

Here are my options so far

    https://www.bassbags.co.uk/product/hidersine-double-bass-case/

    https://www.bassbags.co.uk/product/bass-bags-value-double-bass-case/

    https://www.bassbags.co.uk/product/stentor-padded-double-bass-cover/

I am drawn towards the Stentor despite the 12mm padding and higher cost. It just looks more like the bag I already have. I realise that you get what you pay for, but I really only need a lightweight case for now.

    many thanks

    Adrian

  10. Some additional information about the bass that I gained from a guy on Talkbass around 12 years ago

Melodiya, Menges, Sloveniya, tovarna, glasbenih, instrumentov.

Inscription means 'Melody, Slovenia, Factory, Musical Instruments'.

    (Tovarna=Factory, Glasbenih=Musical, Instrumentov=Instruments)

"These were made in Slovenia from 50s onwards as far as I know. I don't know about DBs, but their guitars, basses etc were considered low-cost, entry-level instruments, similiar to Chech 'Jolana'. However, you should keep in mind that the quality of woods in that part of the world is quite high, that labour costs at that time were very low, and designs usually copied from outside."

    ______

Also worth noting that the valuation I gained was for insurance and reflected the amount I would need to spend to get a similar quality bass

I purchased a Stentor bass about 8 years ago and found that it was easier to play and more suited to me. This may very well be down to personal preference. On balance though I have also briefly played an orchestral bass that I found very difficult to play, despite the owner playing it with amazing dexterity

  11. I am definitely wanting to sell, so no problems there. I have had the bass for so long that I think I am just a bit attached, but I haven't played it for a while now. Here are some measurements

    Flatback

    nut width 4.5cm

fingerboard width at widest point 9cm

    Nut to bridge length 106cm

    Bridge to tailpiece 19cm

    Body length 108cm

    depth 20cm

    Body width lower 76cm

    body width top 53cm

Height from top to bottom of body 184cm

    endpin extends 29cm

    action E 9mm A 9mm D 9mm G 6mm

  12. You will need to come and have a look and play. I am in two minds about selling this as it is my first bass and I have spent a lot on it. I have another bass and simply can’t play two at the same time

    large 3/4 size

not German but valued by Caswells in Bristol as being as good build quality as a German bass. Insured for 3k

    all wood

    no laminate

gigged a fair bit and likely to have been a School bass in a previous life

    Decent soft padded case included

    Pros

    new ebony fingerboard

    neck reset

    new end ping and tailpiece

setup for jazz, low action and good strings

looks lovely if you like the aged look

    nice sound

    cons

Pins all around the top, but nothing to affect structural. Not worth taking out

    lots of scratches and marks

bridge is good but you may want the replace if you want to bow

    Small split in side, fixed

large size and seems heavy compared to my other badd, this may suit you

if you like it them I am open to sensible offers
