I'll let you have my pearl of wisdom here LOL... Personal experience: I have had a '78 pre-EB, an '88 and still have an '89 (a number of more recent 'Rays have come and gone in the meantime), all maple, and they were all very different beasts.
Pre-EB (epoxy-coated preamp) was the warmest, with a nearly "nasal" honk. The '89 (still 2-eq) is hard to tame: much more aggressive in terms of punch and attack (I put it down mainly to the top-load bridge instead of through-body). Even the preamp sounds very different, more extreme, with bass going to booming lows and treble that many could consider harsch if rolled beyond a certain limit. The '89 was a 3-eq, so it was somewhere in the middle for different reasons, not completely comparable (though still maple).
For fingerstyle, the pre-EB was definitely superior, while for slap I tended to prefer the slightly more modern (think Flea) '89. Moreover, because of the depth of the heel and the old bridge design, I could not reach a decent low action on the pre-EB, while on the '89 the strings are virtually sitting on the frets.
Having said that, I can still appreciate the warmth of the pre-EB. Current production of "standard" 'Rays is what I don't like, with the "unfinished" neck and a general "clickety-clackety" tone (to my ears). I also have a Classic (two actually, one of which for sale) which is probably as warm as the pre-EB, although slightly more scooped, like the '78 but with less mids (or with less hi-mids and more lo-mids). The construction quality of the Classic is just superb, and the neck is rounded and varnished like in the old days.

Now, that´s a great description!
I too find the new Stingrays very "clickety-clackety" sounding. Comparing your notes with mine I find my 83 to have a greater overall sound compared to my 88.
Very warm lows, and the highs aren´t as harsh (tought I never always back the treble a little bit o bothe basses when I play.)
In terms of action, is funny because I can put both basses with a really low action, tought fretboard on the 83 is thicker.
Ps You probably have already seen the pics, but both basses have rw boards-I was quite lucky, as most of the stingrays I see here in Portugal are maple-and that would sure keeo my away from buying one. -

Sorry, but I´m only interested in selling it.
Thanks for your interest
PS nice blog!! -
Hello
I need to trim down my personal collection to fund other projects (damn vintage cars...), so this one has to go,
This is a 1989 MIJ Fender Jazz Bass in Olimpic White.
I bought it as N.O.S a couple of months ago from a music store that was about to close its doors .
It´s in great condition and was never gigged. 100% original, and it comes with its Fender OHSC (it still has the tag and case key).
Hardly any scratches on the finish (just a couple of small dings on the lower bout). Also, for some reason, there´s a light yellow streak the runs from on end of the lower bout to the other, as if someone left only this part of the bass exposed to sunlight/smoke.
There´s also one small ding done by me on the headstock while taking pics...sorry
Great neck - straight without any issues!! I´ve also checked the truss-rod, and it works as it should!! No wear whatsoever on the frets, and no marks/dings on the finish!
The bass came with some Fender flatwound strings, but I put a new set of Warwick Red Label 40-100 SS strings. Probably because they´re light gauge strings now it buzzes a bit on the D/G string (12th/13h fret). Due to this, it may need a professional set-up (probably the first in 23 years )
Again, the bass is 100% original and never left my house.
Definitely a great bass!
550 pounds (shipping to Europe included!)
Thanks -
I had one of these - I bought it new at the Bass Center - for some reason it came without the 20th anniversary logo - . Beautiful bass

I didn´t know that. But let me tell you, compared to it my 88 EB just sounds relly lame (although the neck is just amazing!)

Its a very unusual setup, I wonder if its some kind of prototype EB bass from the very start of the EB takeover? the only thing missing is the body contours as the made in USA plate I think stayed for a while until stocks had dried up and there are a few with the old logo that have body contours which pre EB never did so we know they used some old necks right at the start, obviously the bridges went on for years. Also if it had come with the clear scratchplate from the factory that normally went with the trans red I could see it being easier to miss a screw, is it even possible it came with no pickguard at all as it will have the later style pickup cutout that follows the pickup shape unlike my pre EB's that just have big rectangles cut away. Hhmmmm interesting bass, could of been played by Sterling Ball himself

It really is a great bass! Who knows what´s the story behind it (actually, I know who the first owner was, but I haven´t seen him in years...) -
Still for sale! In case you´re wondering it´s 230v 50HZ for EUROPE/UK.

Hello
I´ve just cleaned my attic and found these old copies of BP magazine (when they were a good mag!)
They have some signs of wear (as you´d expect from used mags - but no torn pages!)

I just browsed through these amps manuals and it seems that the Ampeg and the Aguilar have a voltage switch.
I guess I have to contact GK to know about their amp. -
Mains voltage. Mains voltage. Mains voltage. What the above said: unless it has a switch on the back of the amp near where a modular power cord plugs in that will switch to European 220/240 vac, or an automatic internal switch, then it is a pain to either rewire the mains transformer, or switch out one for the higher voltage, or get a step down transformer.
You need three things to get an amplifier in the USA that will work in Europe with a minimum of hassle:
1) a power supply voltage switch on the back of the amp or automatic internal switching;
2) a modular jack on the back of the amp (think computer power input cord) so you can get a modular cord in Portugal that is compatible with the physical mains plug in; and
3) (this is most important, and has not been addressed) warranty. Many USA amplifiers have a limited warranty that will not be honored at different voltages or in different countries.
For example, here is a Class D bass amplifier that is advertised as "internal switching" from 120 vac 60 Hz for the USA market or 240 vac 50 Hz for the European market, and is good value-for-money:

Thanks for the tip!
But do you know if the Ampeg/Aguilar/Gk have a switch like you´ve mentioned?
I just wanted to avoid the $$$ of making some overseas calls. -
Thanks for the answers.
Since I still don´t know which amp I´m going to buy, I´ll try to get a hold of the manuals and see what they say about this.
