Love it Phil! Nicely put indeed.
This really is a lovely instrument. Not so many L2s seem to appear in this condition these days - so a great opportunity for someone to own a piece of history.

Lovely bass GLWTS

boomerang and plug-in leg-rest (far superior to the XL2's hinged thing).

Never had the slightest issue with the XL's hinged leg rest - so I'm genuinely intrigued to understand how far is far? :-)

Bump.
Still holding out for a poly finish Wal, a midnight blue 4003 or a Roland Jupiter 8.
:-)

We'll need a standard doc added to the the team I guess. Man this is becoming a big project :-)

PS: Bump :-) -
I'd be interested - even with this neck - but (as per our PM) with headstock and back of neck painted and lacquered black to match the body. Together with a silver Fender Tele Bass Special" logo. Although given my name, perhaps Fender Overcaster Bass might be more appropriate :-)

Wonder how easy it would be to find a luthier to refinish this neck in black/lacquer with a nice silver Fender Tele Bass Special logo. Hmm. I think I'm based too far North for that.
CB -
Hi there former owner! How much was taken off which parts of the neck? Was the profile significantly altered?
CB -
Here's an offer for you...
- source a full width neck with rosewood board and tele head
- have your luthier resist the urge to reshape
- and have him instead paint the rear and headstock black, apply a silver logo, and then lacquer
I'll give you a good price for this Duff McDirnt Cloudburst Tele Bass Special. You can even keep the tort plate and sell to someone else :-)
CB -
I'd have taken this off your hands had it not been for the neck reshaping. Very nice. And has given me some ideas.

Sorry. Thanks for the offer, but not my thing.
I'm not that bothered about selling the XL. More interested that it flushes out something in my trade list.

...only a P bass sounds good with new and old strings.

This is waaay too much of a generalisation. :-)

Don't you guys using the really, really old strings notice that the bass doesn't intonate properly anymore?
I quite like the sound of old strings but after a while they just won't play in tune.
Strangely I checked the intonation on my Jazz last night. Have a look up the thread and you'll see just how old it and the strings are :-) Anyways - it is absolutely perfect - the most accurate intonation all over the neck of any of my basses.

I love my Fender Jazz Bass with old strings.
I'd need to! - since they are the same strings that have been on it since it was bought for me, new, by my dad in 1974.

My "travel-practice" kit is finally complete - and boy does it rock!
I really think this is a great "compact" practice setup for when you want to travel really light and un-bulky.
All other combinations I tried have been short on sound but this really couldn't sound better. Looked for over a year to find my SFX Micro-H and I'm glad I persevered.
I've removed the iPhone in order to take the photo, but you get the message.
I'm a happy camper. Literally. I'd thoroughly recommend the SFX Micro-H and I assume the current H1 is just as good or better.

Wow. Who'd have predicted that anyone would have the wit and imagination to post a picture like this?
How on earth did you manage to find such an appropriate picture so quickly?
CB -
Anyways, I'm putting this one on my watch list :-)

My dad got fed up and bought me my jazz bass as he said I wasn't able to tell the time with any kind of precision.

Well - it is the second hand forum after all. :-)

Oh please, no clock puns. I'm ticked off already.

This bass would suit a metal band. :-)

When you took that thing home, did you only have the built-in sounds, or connect it to MIDI equipment?
I actually just had the built in sounds. Not good at all. But it was enough of a spark to relight an old unfulfilled ambition, so I'm happy about that. :-)

So how easy are these things to make tuneful sound come out of? I understand midi very well in terms of synths, but I don't understand these things at all. What do you do, in terms of blowing, and in terms of making it play notes that are in tune? And do they work with any midi sound source? Or do you need a special synth/software/sound-producing device at the other end?
They are easy to make a tuneful sound out of. However, if your sound generator is not capable of dealing with breath control and doesn't have appropriate patches that are suited to breath control and a load of other aspects such as modelling of transitions between blown notes, then you will have no dynamics and no expression. In that case pushing a key on the wind controller is the same as thinking about what key you're about to press on a keyboard and blowing into the wind controller (in any way at all, doesn't matter how) is nothing more than the equivalent of pressing your chosen key on the keyboard.
However, if you have the right sound generator loaded with the right patches, then you have an instrument that's pretty much as expressive as a real sax, with a range of 7 octaves and with a range of sounds - realistic or synthetic.
