Hot Tub

I've been watching this thread with a mixture of incredulity and amazement, and a touch of bewilderment too. Twelve pages so far, mostly (not all) denegrating slap bass. Thing is, I'm guessing most, some, less, or more, people who have posted on this thread have been to a BassBash. The one I attended was a complete slapfest, and totally put me off going to another one. So, I wonder if the thread title should more accurately be, "God I hate..... slap bass. Unless it's me who's doing it." ???

Just an observation.

In my opinion (which is totally subjective and worth exactly what you paid for it! ), MarkBass doesn't really have "a sound" as such. Sure, there's a degree of flexibility with the VPL/VLF filters and eq., but with everything flat or off I find MarkBass to be as close to a perfectly pure sound as it's possible to get. So the problem is, if you go for "the Orange sound" or "the Ampeg sound" or whatever, you're effectively stuck with that. Maybe that's what you really want; fair enough, but I'd probably look at processing/modifying your signal to get the sound you want, because I think you'll regret selling the MarkBass unit very quickly!

I took the busted amp module from my lovely little [i]Perfect Ten[/i] combo into Ashdown's repair centre yesterday around mid-day. Just had a call from Guy to say it's all sorted, is being sent out today and should be with me tomorrow! 48hrs from taking it to getting it back. Very happy Hot Tub!

I play a few Purple songs, but not this one for some reason.... Roger Glover is yet another very melodic - and underrated - rock bass player.

Inspired by the "Bass Tabs" thread, why is it seemingly impossible to find bass lines in standard notation? I've picked up a few (four in total!) most of which were posted on here at some point. I know tab is used by a large number of players, but is it really laziness, or is it simply the fact that notation just isn't available for the majority of songs we want to play?

I managed to learn "Rythmn Stick" from notation which was posted on here. I think learning the bass parts for songs that we know from standard notation would be a great way to learn to read, but it just doesn't seem to be available. I've been desperately searching for "Oliver's Army", but can't find it anywhere. There are many others too.

I know there's books out there, but I don't what to by a book just for one or two songs. I'd end up with hundreds of books, and once something's learned and committed to memory, I don't need the hard copy anymore, hence the desire for an online resource of notation.

My little combo died on Monday night.

Removed the rear panel and found two fuses blown on the board - 1.6A and 3.15A. I've replaced them both, the 1.6 is fine but the 3.15 keeps blowing. I've checked the outputs from the transformer and they're spot on. The speaker always gave a significant "thump" when it's first switched on, but now that thump is a deep hum (not too loud) which lasts for 1/10th of a second or so before the fuse goes. Nothing on the board appears burned or melted, everything looks in tiptop condition, but clearly something's not right.

Is it worth trying to diagnose, or should I just look at replacing the board? Presumably I could buy one from Ashdown and just bolt it in?

It's a lovely little combo, and I'm missing it!

Well, after a few months and several cancellations, this folky open mic jam thingy finally went ahead last night. Based on the advice on this thread, I took my little Ashdown Perfect 10. Walked in, and there's a bl%$dy PA set up! It wasn't huge, and pretty basic, but I thought my little combo would seriously struggle. As it turned out, it wasn't that loud, and my combo produced a rather lovely sound. Very happy.

There were a dozen or so other musicians there, some playing originals, some playing covers, and an audience of about 30/40 people.

So, my mate and I get up towards the end of the first half and do three of his original songs. I didn't drop a note and we got a rapturous reception! Seriously, it was amazing! I was subsequently complimented on my playing, and my sound, by several of the people there. And the general consensus from the audience was that with the exception of one guy who was simply in a league of his own, we were the best performers by a significant margin. We're already booked in for next month's session, and have been asked if we can do more songs - possibly a 30/40min "set". Very, very happy! I believe that the best compliment a musician can get is one that comes from another musician. That's what happened and last night was a thoroughly enjoyable, roaring success. Apart from the last 10min....

At the end of the night, a couple of folks got up to do an impromptu blues jam and asked if I'd join in. I did, and it all went swimmingly, until my amp died! According to Mrs HT, this was immediately followed by a serious Spinal Tap moment, as I frantically checked plugs, cables, power supplies, switches, but to no avail. The little Ashdown box had been pushed to its limit and was thoroughly dead. Not happy. Anyhoo, opened it up this morning and found two blown fuses. One is the power supply to the board from the transformer, the other is speaker protection. Can't tell if they're anti-surge, slo-blow, bog standard, or sommat else, but will have a trawl online and see what I can find. Looks like no serious damage done.

Next month I'll be taking the MarkBass "Beast". I won't use a fraction of its potential, but at least I know it'll easily handle anything I can throw at it.

If you're going to consider 2nd hand I reckon you'll be spoiled for choice at that price range. As has been said here and elsewhere, if possible try as many as you can before parting with cash.

OK, to be fair, I probably wouldn't pay money for it!

But, it's an absolute joy! The idea of a family getting together and making music is - to me - completely wonderful!

This has made me quite happy.

Don't know where you should start, but listen also to Lazy and Pictures Of Home, both on Machine Head. Fantastic basslines. I think Mr Glover is a much overlooked and much underrated player.

This is correct. The Korg Pitchblack as a power output on the back of the pedal. You just need a little "jumper" lead with two plugs - one in the Korg, the other in your other pedal.

I wonder if people who own multiple instruments really want to amalgamate all of them into one perfect bass? Maybe they all have elements of that intangible "perfect" sound, but individually it's just not quite there?

I could probably trade/swap/sell my basses for something else, but deep down [i][sic][/i] I know it wouldn't make me any happier with "my sound", whatever that is. I only have three and they're all totally different (5-string, 4-string, and acoustic).

I would really like to own a top end "boutique" bass (50th birthday is coming up - you reading this Mrs HT? ), but purely because it is a thing of beauty. I'd certainly use it, probably every day, but it won't ever make me a better player.
