That's lovely mate  - olly white with tort guard is my fave colour combo (aside from woods). Kids cute too!

    Yeah me too!

It’s actually a weird grey off-white which I’ve not seen before. I’ve got simple/boring tastes re colours (I like woods and white like yourself and at times black)

    Welcome to the fold....

Hopefully there's somebody here that's local to you who might give you some pointers.

Personally I'm a big fan of Scott's Bass lessons ( http://scottsbasslessons.com/) and Talkingbass https://www.talkingbass.net/) - both have free lessons pitched at all levels. They should keep you going for, ooh the next 20 years or so...

As a beginner, probably the best piece of advice I can give you is STAY AWAY FROM THE MARKETPLACE!!! When I joined I had three basses which seemed to cover the ground. Now, like many members here, I have significantly more. The marketplace will almost certainly give you uncontrollable GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome).

Ignore my advice at your peril!!😱😱

Beware those who tell you that "everything is nice...but more is better" (that's me usually)

I second every word of this post!

Scotts lessons are great and focus on your development and enjoyment over gear!!! :)

Welcome to the low end community 👊🏼🎶

  3. So this arrived today!

I ordered it from bass direct with the confidence in the fact that if I don’t get on with it I can return it within 7 days. It was originally a custom design for a member of a well known band according to Mark at bass direct (although he couldn’t recall the name). I’ve emailed Jon to see if he has any info/memory of when this was made and who for.

Sound: Fantastic basic tone. Nice and punchy but also soft with a lighter touch applied, and I’m blown away at the flexibility of this especially considering it’s an all passive design (Villex pickups. If you don’t know em look em up!). Between the pup positions, mid control and tone roll off I’ve enjoyed tweaking to many genres tonight on the cans 🎧 From warm, gooey vibes along to Jill Scott to thin, edgy punky tones to The Cure. Note: I was playing through a microbass III which gave me bass control which you obviously don’t get on board with this design but that’s something I adjust per track/style as opposed to mids which I like on the bass mid song so it’s great for me. I found the passive mid cut/boost to sound broader and more natural than most active circuits I’ve used. Very useful control to set how much you’re sitting in or poking through the track. Plus when completely off the somewhat scooped sound changes the whole nature of the basses tone IMO which adds to the flexibility. Good general balance with the B (can’t stand it when the B sticks out tonally: I end up avoiding it which defeats the object of the thing!) Great natural slap sound also with plenty of sustain.

Playability: Excellent. Came set up nicely from bass direct which helped. Very playable neck for my hands and the spacing feels just right. No dead spot issues.

Weight: Would like it to be a pound or two lighter in a dream world but hey can’t have it all all the time!

Looks: Really like the unusual off-white grey finish. Works well with the tort and maple IMO.

    Issues:

    - Slight neck dive. Nothing extreme but plan on putting Hipshot ultralights on there which should help it get to where I’d like it to be.

    - No dots on the knobs. Plan on replacing them so I can see where I am!

Summary: Inspired and excited my playing and very flexible in terms of styles. What more could you ask for (if not a touch lighter: but hey it’s a Jazz V and it’s not “heavy”) 😋

I can safely recommend Jon Shuker’s pieces very, very highly based on my experience with this!

The little funker gave the low B a solid note when I gave it to him in this shot. Proud 🙌🏼

    - A touch of grounding buzz when hands aren’t in contact with strings or hardware when tone pots all the way open. Hoping my luthier can sort this. Would be fine for live but it’s also for studio and I want to be able to cleanly record sparkly lines 😎 (without having to tape a cable from my arm to the hardware lol)

    - No dots on the knobs. Plan on replacing them so I can see where I am!

  5. Was on the hunt for a high quality, traditional body jazz 5er.

Just picked this light grey beaut up from bass direct. Can’t wait till it arrives to try it out. The passive Villex pickups with mid cut/boost and treble roll off seem perfect for me. Will update when it’s in my hands.

    My first Shuker :)

  6. Hey Mick,

Not adding anything new to this really. Just wanted to state that for me it’s a simple distinction: full-on originals band where shared ownership is official vs being employed to perform for someone’s solo project.

Too many times I’ve seen (and at times been involved with) something which resembles both and neither and it’s never made very clear.

If it’s the former then yes, discussions and suggestions on parts is a part of the process but ultimately what your playing is YOUR contribution.

The latter situation should entail the owner paying the other guys, even if an arrangements in place for some free rehearsals but paid to gig even if at the artists loss. In this situation, unless the artists wants your take on their songs then towing the line on their parts is part of the gig.

Put simpler: A front man isn’t a solo artist and vice versa IMO.

Don’t know the particulars re the above in your case but for me, if I wasn’t being paid then I’d expect to have the ultimate say in crafting my contribution. Otherwise where’s the fun/point of an originals gig?

  7. Just bought a Godin A4 from Frank.

A pleasure to meet and deal with. There was an issue with noise on one of the jack outputs and Frank jumped in the motor, bombed down to our local luthier, got it sorted and returned to me with it all sorted and told me if it goes again he will sort it out.

Cannot recommend dealing with Frank highly enough!

As honest, decent BCer as you’ll find 👍🏼

  8. SOLD

A rare thru neck ACG Headless Harlot 5

A1 Immiculate, as new condition. Not a single ding or scratch that I can find! This has been gigged by me twice and obmm once according to him when I collected it so a total of three nights played out. So a new ACG for half the price.

We’re talking exotic wood for days here: sycamore, Asian ebony, Wenge, flamed maple and swamp ash.

It has grub screws for use with normal strings if that’s what you want.

The unusual low pass filter amp per pickup that is spec’d in a lot of Alan’s custom builds. Really cool feature is the resonance control. And of course the high boost circuit that runs parallel to the low pass filter adding some tops back in. That along with the switchable pickup config makes it very versatile tonally.

I bought on here from the original owner obbm and I believe to commission it would cost in region of £3,000, although I’ve heard that Alan doesn’t now make thru necks.

Perfectly low action, blue fibre optic dots on the side of the neck (which I found a lot better for use on a dark stage than the brighter LEDs that are common) plays like a dream and has a very hi-if sound with plenty of punch.

The fretboard is zero radius and the neck is asymmetrical (slightly thinner on the G side and thicker at the E). Unorthodox but I’m never consciously aware of it and find it very comfy: the neck plays itself.

I strongly believe that it’s underpriced at £1500 but in BC spirit it’s what I paid for it.

It has double ball status strings that are mice and clean but have lost some of their ‘brand-new zing’ but still have some there which is great for some but if you want that super fresh string zing then you’ll want to grab some new ones. Haven’t used the grub screws before but got instructions on from Alan (the luthier) on how to use them to fit normal single ball strings.

The only wear I can see is the black has worn off a couple of the brigade pickup screws. (See in photos)

    34-inch scale
    Swamp Ash body core
    Asian Ebony top/veneer.
Thru 5 piece flame maple/wenge neck
Acrylic Flame Sycamore neck – no dots
    Dual Action trussrod
    Carbon neck rods
Blue LED via fiber-optic side dots
    Black hardware
    Hipshot Ultralite Tuners.
    Hipshot Type A bridge - 18mm spacing
    ACG String anchor
RFB humbucker bridge pick-up with coil switching
    RFB Single coil neck pick-up.

I had a 5er in the same finish - sold here if I recall correctly. No disrespect to your photographic skills but they don't convey the finish - you need to have a sunny day to get the best from the paint.

The quality you get for so little money with these is legendary....

    GLWTS

Yeah it’s got a really golden sparkle to it which catches the light 👍🏼
