John gave me the relative body widths when I ordered my GA24;

Series 1 Mark King - 15 1/4 inches
GA24 - 14 1/2 inches
Series 2 & 3 Mark King 14 1/4 inches

He also offered to scale any bass down to suit at no extra charge. Wottaguy!!

Here's a side-by-side comparison between the Series I 'Classic' and GA24, just out of interest....

I don't use this any more but it's a fantastic pice of kit, as endorsed by Will Lee, Billy Sheehan etc.

Allows switching between 2 basses with pre-shape facility on one channel and bass/mid/treble shapingon the other. There's also a boost switch for the effects loop or for making those blistering solos stand out...

It's very similar but there are differences, like the neck is rock maple rather than figured, the sratchplate is single-ply and it has the standard elephant-ear tuners that GB's seem to have rather than Schaller type ones.

I bought it from the Bass Centre at the same time I bought the Warwick Streamer V - a very expensive afternoon! The guys were doing the px and paperwork on the Warwick so I went off for a play...and found the GB in a corner. Plugged it in and the rest, as they say, is history!

I only realised it was close to MK's bass after my mate, who worked for Yamaha at the time, had been to some rehearsal studio in North London several months later to deliver a few bits 'n bobs to a band there. Turned out that the band was L42 (the stuff was for Lyndon Connah) and MK was playing his blue GB!!

According to Bernie, it was one of a very small handful of basses that he produced for retail at that time. I suppose to get the GB name out there at the time MK started using them and boost custom orders.

I tried the AG500 at the same time I bought the DB750 and it was a very close call, other than on price and weight!!

I use a GBIV through my DB750 for nearly every gig and can vouch for the fact that GB and Aguilar do sound great together, if that's any help to you.

However, I'm not really into this thing of certain basses sounding better with certain amps. It's all down to personal taste, string choice and EQ settings at the end of the day. And, as someone else has already said, it's your rig so go with whatever you like!

Hey, I wonder if John could make a mini scaled-down Starchild for my little boy?!! Although he's only 2 it would be a great way of getting him into bass from an early age! (spot the over-zealous parent!)

Totally agree with your comments Nick. The sound of the GA24 is more 'modern' in a way and seems much tighter...well to my ears anyway (hmmm, that reminds me, must pop down to Boots and get some wax removal stuff before the weekend's gig onslaught...). Although you can still get some RRRAAAWWW sounds off the bridge pick up on it's own. Lavverly!!

What mods are you thinking of apart from the neck length? I might just let you blag my custom's headstock shape if you're a good boy!!!

LJ's bass work is always great and Dance With Me is a great slappy line but IMHO the best bassline on the album is Bobby Watson's masterpiece on Rock With You. Sheer class!

It got a full transcription a few months back in Bass Player mag. It's not quite as easy as it sounds!

Same here! But hey, it's what the people want more often than not. And they pay the wages too, let's not forget.

Anyway, why don't they just ask the chosen band NOT to play it? Any band can choose NOT to play a song in their set list!

My main gigging basses for the last 9 years have been a GB IV and Warwick Streamer Stage I 5 string.

I primarily play in a functions band doing 60's, 70's and 80's stuff and every tone I've ever needed can be got from these two basses. So. a big +1 for GB!

Try one if you can. They're fantastic all-round instruments, great range of sounds, beautifully built and have excellent weight/balance. The IV (or Spitfire as they're now called) looks great too for any genre of music - a contemporary modern take on the Jazz bass design.

I hadn't thought that it might be partly mental too, you know the come-down after a gig. Hmmm.

I have got a damn heavy rig (DB750 plus 2 Aggie cabs) which probably doesn't help...but me likes the sound too much!

Maybe I just have to suffer for my art...

I don't know if it's just my age (I'm only 41 and not unfit...) but over the last couple of years I've started suffering quite badly after gigs.

Symptoms are hangover-like - muzzy, sickly headache, general lethargy and aches (no puking though!). I put it all down to the late nights, physical strains from rigging and de-rigging, concentrating on the drive home etc. (not booze...) but I never used to suffer like this until a few yers ago.

I have a routine of drinking plenty of water and stretching out my back, neck and shoulders when I get home. This also stops me going straight to bed whilst my brain is still buzzing from the gig and driving. Despite this though, after most gigs I feel pretty crappy the next morning!

Anyone else out there suffer like this too? Or am I all alone???

Any tried and tested remedies to share with fellow suffering Basschatters?

I'm hoping to make it down, Guildford's not too far from me and I ain't gigging that Saturday (for a change!).

If so, I'll bring my GA24 Custom, GBIV and maybe lug my Aguilar DB750 down, in case the venue fancies putting in some new windows!

I'm only thinking of selling 'cos I really doesn't get used. It is a great bass, not too heavy and I've always loved the 'Ray sound.

What I really fancy some old-school P bass low-end thump! Been listening to a lot of Rufus etc. lately and just lurve the sound of Bobby Watson's bass ('74 P I think?). How's about the nice little bass line he did on Wacko's Rock With You also? It's THAT sound I want!!!

I bought it brand-spanking new from the Bass Centre in Birmingham in mid-2001.

A shipment of 5 new 'Rays had literally just come in to the shop before I got there and all were still in their cardboard packaging. Had a great time with the sales chap unpacking them all to find one I liked - just like Christmas!

No mutes Kev but a piece of sponge or rolled up hanky does just fine!

I've seen used 'Ray prices mentioned a couple of other threads so had this price range in mind. Hadn't settled on a price as I wanted to test the market first.

I'll post some pics if there's genuine interest but we all know what a Stringray looks like (I hope!). It's absolutely mint, even though it has been used for gigging, and comes with the original ABS flightcase.

Reason for sale - I just don't play it much anymore! And, I fancy one of those Sadowsky hybrid P-J thingies (UV Factor 50, or whatever they're called... ) or an old 70's P or J Bass .
