1. A lot of slappers can't pull it off when you say "try it in F"...that shows how limited their technique is.
Slap is ok when it fuels the song but you cannot force a technique into every song.
I play a lot of slap but mainly in my living room, I cannot use it in most of the bands I play in.
I try it in various keys and avoid the clichés like the octave etc..it's not easy to make it interesting but it can be done (check Kai Eckhard-Karpeh who uses nice chordal work)

2. Recently I bought another fretless so I have around four fretless basses which is just a bit too much..
After thinking this through I decided that one of two of my Lefay basses can be sold..
Lefay basses are just too good to live without so luckily I still have the five string left.
This one is a dream to play, has an amazing sustain and a powerful output although it is passive. The neck feels slim and is very fast and of all the fretless basses I have owned this one generates the most compliments whenever played by fellow bass-players. The action is very low without buzz and this makes playing and sliding effortless.
The stainless steel-neck sounds really warm in contrast with its looks..
These basses cost around 4000 euros new and this one is for sale for 2500 euros (with a gigbag).
Price is firm and luckily I don't really need the money but I'm trying to cut down on basses and I have enough options.
Can be picked up or can be shipped.
Feel free to contact me for any questions. No trades please, I have more than enough basses for the moment.
Thanks
Geert

There is a youtube thing which Reiner was so kind to put on this own Lefay-site which features me playing the Remington steele 5-string (sound is similar to the 4-string) for a sound impression.

3. That Alembic looks a lot like the one I just bought a couple of weeks ago...did you sell it to a Belgian bassplayer ?
I'm pretty sure it's the same :-)
Great collection, by the way !

This is mine and I think was yours...

4. When I watched PSP on Youtube I wasn't that enthousiastic (it sounded a bit too much "look how complicated music can be"). However I went to see their show last Saturday here in Belgium and I was stunned.
It was energetic, it sounded fresh and the compositions were inspired.
The combination Philips-Palladino was great...they played with taste and the lack of a guitarplayer gave a lot of space for Pino. Odd measures, groovy funky tunes with some of the best bassplaying I've ever heard.
I saw Palladino a couple of times live (with Paul Young, Tony O'Malley (afterwards I talked to Pino for an hour)) and since I'm not a big fan of his John Mayer/D'Angelo-side I didn't have high hopes.
I was again struck like in the "old" days.
He played quite a bit of fretless (a five and four-string Musicman), even played two bass-solos and his mastership of groove and taste on top of this fusion-music was overwhelming. He played quite busy but it never took the groove away and he was there to support any bass-drum by Simon Philips (who was excellent and very musical).
They did "Blue rondo a la Turk" and when that fretless kicked it....wow !
Pino is still one of the most inspiring bass-voices in the world. I realised how good he is in àny style : latin, jazzy tunes, R n B, blues, Motown stuff, rock...he can cover it all and the most amazing thing is that he is still very recognisable no matter what he plays.
It was extremely hot during the concert and I gasped for air when I went outside but PSP was absolutely worth it.. The sort of concert you need to see every now and then to know what music and adventure is all about.

5. They had used the chord sequence of "message in a bottle" to announce a Belgian cook ("cock" Rodman joked) earlier in the show (he wrote a book about cooking "SOS Cooking") so they only new the verse.
They were surprised since the soundmix normally is a bit better and they would have known the structure better (I know the musicians too so I'm pretty sure)

6. Yesterday, Sting was a guest in a Belgian tv-show to talk about this new album.
It wasn't rehearsed but Sting went to the stage to sing "Message in a bottle" with the completely surprised house-band.
Thought I'd share this with you...

7.
The next one is quite unusual as it is a medium scale Spoiler with the shape of a Series I, but it has a solid body like the signature series. It was made in 1987 and I got it from a nice bass player in Paris who already owns two other Alembic basses (Elan and Essence). It was one of the few basses played by Mark King in 1988 on a Deutsche TV program (the famous bass challenge) at 4:35 mn : Here
This bass looks a lot like the one I used to own for a brief moment. I sold it about two-three years ago (not sure since time flies) to a very kind bassplayer from Paris (he played upright too). He came all the way to the station in Brussels to pick up this bass. He was around 50 years old but can't remember his name. Might be my old bass...:-)

8. I bought this a year ago but I haven't been using it a lot so this one is for sale again.
It is a Sound Of Sweden bass designed by Jonas Hellborg (bassplayer for Mahavishnu amongst others) and this model he used for a while during his career.
There is not much to be found on the internet about these basses.
A lot of different sounds are available through different switches from P-bass to dark mids. It is a versatile bass and easy to play.
27(!) fret fingerboard.
Shadow humbucking pick ups with
3-position switches for selecting humbucking - single coil - out of phase.
I'm asking 350 euros (I can include a gigbag), bass can be picked up (I live near Brussels) or can be send.

for an idea of the sound, if you check Jonas Hellborg bass solo on youtube, there are plenty of things to be found with this type of bass.
If you want more pictures just send me an email
Thanks,
Geert

9. I was at the casino of Ostend for a tv-show. I noticed that Toots Thielemans was there too and I just went up to him, shook his hand and thanked him for the great music he had made. He accepted my gesture with kindness although he didn't know who I was.
Later on he came up to me, sat beside me and we talked about music and I mentioned his work with Jaco Pastorius. He talked about that time and I said that "Three views of a secret" was one of my favourite pieces of music ever and that I loved his playing on it.
He took his harmonica out of his pocket and played the theme for me and improvised. I was speechless and it was one of the most beautiful moments in my life. I thanked him, he stood up and I went to a dressing room where I started crying. It was magic.
