Trace head was a v4 & the mutron was a q-tron. Would love a mutron but they'm very expensive! ;-)
Jimrs2k's genz, fearful & status set up was full of grunt & worth a mention too.
double Bass was such a surprising challenge, it hurts! Might have to have a serious go though.

Knew I'd get those Heads and things wrong!

2. Lovely old Vintage Dual Compressor in great condition, still in original box and with 18v PSU. No issues, this is the second generation one which is the more sought after. Great review below:

Trace Elliot SMX: This old, long out of production pedal has a cult following among bassists. It is a dual-band comp, which was very rare at the time it was produced.

Unusual features include: separate knobs to control the amount of compression for the high and low sides of the crossover; a "tilting" EQ knob that emphasizes either the highs or the lows; and a second footswitch to bypass only the high band of the compression (meaning only the lows would get compressed).

The center frequency of the crossover is 350Hz, but it has a shallow slope so the upper and lower bands actually overlap between 225Hz and 900Hz. The compression attack is not adjustable, but they preset a fast attack for the high band and a slow attack for the low band, which seems like a good setup. The noise level is fairly low--not the quietest, but acceptable. It does roll off a bit of both the lows and highs. The overall tone and action are quite smooth and musical, clean and punchy, at most comp settings; only at the highest settings it can sound a bit "artificial". At high ratios there can be a noticeable "pop" or "tic" artifact when the threshold is crossed. The maximum ratio is 8:1, so even at the highest settings it does not act as a limiter on the strongest peaks.

This pedal is not quite up to the same audio standards and capabilities as the Rane or FEA dual-band comps, but it does sound quite good, and the differences would be less apparent while playing live on stage. Dual-band compression in general can allow much more finger-articulation sound and less "swallowing of the highs" than a single-band system, so the Trace SMX is a worthy contender if those qualities are important to you, and if you find one at a fair price.

It runs on 18V DC, which means either using two batteries, or finding an 18V adapter with a 2.5 mm barrel plug, because the "normal" 2.1 mm Boss-type plug does not fit. Finding an appropriate AC adapter is critical, and if one of these pedals is sold with the adapter then it is worth paying more for. If you have an isolated-outlet multiple power supply (like the Voodoo Labs PPII+) you can have Voodoo Labs custom-make you a series Y cable for 18 V, with the appropriate 2.5 mm plug. The construction of the pedal is very heavy-duty. It's a bit over twice the width of a Boss pedal. There is no LED or other meter to indicate signal over the threshold. The footswitches are not "true bypass", but the bypassed tone is fairly clean.

Price in USD: $75-$175 used, no longer available new.

3. Attendees

Yorks5stringer, Dominsomerset ,Mojoke ,Thor, DorsetBlue, GrahamT, Woodinblack+1,Stevie,Jimrs2k,Norm,The Rev,James Budden, Ben Crowe.

As no-one took any photos, I'll try and do it from memory: Graham T brought his Hohner B Bass V, Mojoke had a Lakeland amongst 2 others, Dominsomerset brought a cheap and cheerful but nice Westfield Jazz along with a fretless pbass with Jazz pickups, Thor had a very nice 69 Jazz, Norm had a MM Stingray, The Rev brought his Double Bass, Woodinblack had a Squier VI and an Iby SGR, Jinrs2k brought his Status Kingbass. Doubtless missed some out including my own KBass V ( superjazz), the HB P/Jazz 5 string as mentioned elsewhere, and my Warwick Star Bass which everyone seemed to like. Mind as I organised the event it would have been rude not to....
Heads included GB Shuttle, MarkBass combos and cabs, my RJ TTE head and cab, Trace V5 and Barefaced Vintage Cab, Phil Jones briefcases, an EI head and some Fishman goodies with the Rev. Norm brought a shed load of pedals including a Mutron I seem to remember.

Guest speaker was Ben Crowe from Crimson Guitars who talked us through how one could use his tools to work on a Bass prior to and after setup. He brought along his prototype Perspex Bass for Charlie Jones which surprisingly was not too heavy due to nice carving and sculpting of the body. Should enough people be interested he is happy to run a Bass setup workshop where participants would learn all the tricks of the trade. We had a very entertaining hour plus with Ben and those present brought out their problem Basses and he explained how to resolve their issues! Ben also showed us some of the files and tools he makes, these can be seen in his online shop:http://crimsonguitars.com/shop/ There are also loads of online videos that anyone interested can access too on his site.

Norm enjoyed an impromptu Double Bass lesson courtesy of TheRev and James Budden (its all in the wrist/posture Norm!)

So all in all, we had a pretty decent afternoon, good job I brought an electric fire as the Skittle Alley was not warm and despite the Landlords protestations, the radiators never came on!

Apologies if I've missed out anyone who attended or missed mentioning their Bass/Head/Cab that they brought along, and onwards to the LBS this weekend!

Thanks to all who attended and Dave from Probass (ElectrovibeBasses) had to send his last minute apologies. However any Basschatter can obtain a £20 discount off any Bass on his website by mentioning the Bash ( and paying by direct bank transfer).http://www.probass.co.uk/Home.html

5. There are one or two on here who I'd say qualify: no names, no pack drill!

I tend to have a one in, one out policy, so out went two and one has come in! However did change all my rig too! I'll always keep the Kbass I made as I was given a bequest towards most of the cost.

My current settings (in clock format) are

Gain 12.00
Compressor 9.00
Bass 2.00
Mid 12.00
Treble 1.00
Colour - off or up to 9.00 depending on what I'm playing. Any more than that and I find it too mushy

It doesn't have the full-on dirty grind of the TB500 gain, but I like that. I want 'chunky' not 'dirty'
Ta, I'll give it a spin.

I've got to detour via Glastonbury so I won't make the 12 o'clock start, but should be there by 1pm if that's OK?
I'm bringing my ply double bass, a BigE MAS45 cab and the EA Doubler amp. Will also bring my Eminence EUB if I can fit it in on top of the baby's pram...
No probs, Ben Crowe from Crimson Guitars can't get to us till 2.00 pm, so you'll only miss people setting up and tyre kicking....! :P Oh, and did I mention the initiation ceremony....?

I've had one for a few weeks now, replacing an Orange TB500, and I love it. It's taken a lot of playing around with the gain/compressor/colour settings to find 'my' tone, but it sounds so much 'fatter' than the TB

Certainly sounds good through a BF Super 12T - and no shortage of bottom end <_<

It really did sound good with a Precision I had recently

Can't quite see all your settings, could you list them on here please? I tend to favour a smooth sound so do not have the gain above 9' o clock.

I got mine brand new from Thomann, with a 3 year warranty, for not much more than some used ones on here

And as a bonus, the little orange LED's inside it add to the valve glow so it looks super-cool as well
Could you list your settings please, can't quite see them all! I tend to go for a smooth sound so gain is at 9'oclock.

How do you find the 15? I have a 4x10 and am sick of having a sore back but I like the 4ohm ness of it. I see the 15 is 8 Ohms..... bit concerned about having to buy two cabs to get the full 500w.

More than adequate for smaller venues, we played a social club last Sat night with it just as backline and then on the Sunday played the West of England Showground DI'd through the PA- huge large hall full of cars. I think Walman was using this rig with 2 of these cabs at one stage, you could ask him if he really needed them for a decent sound?

10. I've just got a TTE after a MB LMII and LMIII. Its bigger than my LM's but more old school in sound. Don't find it deficient in the bottom end but have only the LM's to compare to. Also running it through a RJ NYC151 cab as opposed to my old T102 cab ( both MB).

@York5Stringer - any chance that you can record something DI'd tone wide open from the HB? I'd really like to hear the tone. EDIT: Or, you could tell me if this youtube video matches the sound of yours. Particularly the neck pickup and both pickups on this sounds good to me. Perhaps the B string could be a touch louder though.

@Kev - which wooden neck Status do you mean? I remember in the ebay forum we had a discussion where a Status bass was on for what seemed to be a very cheap price to me. People pointed out that it was wooden necked, and not as fancied (and if I recall correctly, not as good) as the carbon necked Statuses.

@momats - I haven't played a TRBX just yet. One of my local shops has one on the wall, but I haven't tried it out yet. The SGC Nanyo basses seem to go for bargain prices. There was a SB310 that went for about £115 near to me. And it might have gone for less if I hadn't bid on it as I was the second highest bidder. Here's a SGC Nanyo BC, said to be in excellent condition, that went for £99. Bet the buyer was pleased. Seller, probably not so much.

Off to find the Alpher on tour thread.

Sounds very accurate to me although I reckon mine has less fret noise! Did I mention the fret edges are smooth as a proverbial as well?

Nice to see the letters in CDO in alphabetical order as they should be :)

Yes, I can't stand it when people say they have OCD...can't they see the letters are in the wrong order?
