1. Hi Paul, I play a Gibson EBO which is a short scale. I use D'Addario EPS170S Prosteels Roundwound strings which are .045-.100 gauge. They give me a great sound with my covers band. Hope that helps. Cheers, Leigh.
2. Hello and welcome! I'm from Aberdeenshire, but originally from Airdrie.
3. Ok, after much deliberating and trawling through the forums, looks like I have narrowed it down to Genz Benz shuttle 6.0, GK MB500 or EA Iamp Micro 550. I like the idea of the EA Micro with the dual channels, so I can have 2 different set ups for bass guitar and EUB. Otherwise I can use a Boss LS2 to switch between the two instruments if I go for the Genz or the GK. Does anyone have any of the above with a Barefaced Compact? Do they give a good sound with both EUB and bass guitar? I'm after a good clean sound, but still nice and punchy. Problem is I'm a long way from decent music shops where I can try 'em out.
4. Good stuff! Genz benz sounds like the way to go, although I must say I'm still tempted with the EA Iamp Micro 550. Anyone use one of these with a Compact, and also use both bass guitar and EUB lke I do?
5. Does the Genz Benz Shuttle 6.0 have a nice clean tone? Plenty of volume? I'm considering getting one to match up with a Barefaced Compact. Cheers, Leigh
6. Thanks Steve. I've already had a look at your thread, some good stuff in there. Let me know how you get on with your new cab and whichever amp you get. Leigh.
7. Thanks Mark, Looks like a trip to Glasgow or Edinburgh is on the cards, as the music shops up here don't have much choice of bass amps. Thanks for all the advice so far, it is very much appreciated! Leigh.
8. Thanks guys, I appreciate the input. I'll keep doing my research til I find something I like. Cheers! Leigh.
9. Is the Acoustic Image Clarus good for switching between electric bass guitar and EUB? I see from the website its dual channel, which interests me. I also had a look at the EA Doubler and Markbass LMK online, both of which are dual channel. Anyone got any of these? Keep the suggestions going ! Leigh.
10.
I recommend an Acoustic image Clarus head: http://www.acoustici.../#/clarus_s4/lp
Looks interesting. I like the look of that! Thanks Michael.
11.
Sure, However the point I was attempting to make was that 130W from your current combo is likely to be rather less loud than 450 W into your compact.... Unless you're desperate to lug an amp around that weighs more than your cab I would bite the entire bullet and check out the usual class D lightweight amp suspects.... But volume is just not about the amp.. 100W into a 97 db/1w/1m cab sounds as loud as 50W into a 100db/1w/1m cab... CHeers Mark
Thanks Mark. I understand your point fully. I intend to look into the class D amps as well, trouble is I'm not that well up on the latest gear. I assume you mean stuff like Genz Benz, Aguilar, and the like? Cheers, Leigh.
12. Thanks xgsjx, I have to try out some Markbass amps soon. Thanks for the advice. Leigh.
13.
Oops It's a Tour 700. I generally work on the principle that it's far better to underdrive a large amp than it is to overdrive a small one.
Agreed. My concern is I have read the Tour 450 can be a bit underpowered. If that is the case I would prefer the 700, to give more headroom.
Is the peavey combo loud enough? If it is with 130W then I suspect 130W into a compact will be just as loud... Worth having a chat with Alex at Barefaced?
The problem with the Peavey Combo is the weight. I'm looking for a lighter set up. I did check with Alex at Barefaced and he reckons the Tour 450 would be ok, but I was wanting to see if anyone here actually has a set up of either Tour 450 or 700 with a Barefaced Compact, to let me know what it is like.
14. Thanks for the replies. I'll take a look at Markbass amps. icastle, is the the Tour 450 or 700 you have? Don't think there is a 750? I have read the octaver is a waste of time. The problem I have is making sure I make the right choice. I don't want to get the 450 then wish I had got the 700! Although I'm still open to any suggestions of other makes. Thanks!
15. After 30+ years of sterling service I have finally decided to retire my Peavey MK3 130W combo and go down the Barefaced lightweight cab route to save my poor back. Decided to get a Compact. Trouble is I am unsure which amp head to go for. I fancy a Peavey Tour 450 but having trawled through the forums, some people reckon its a bit underpowered. I play in a weddings band doing covers and scottish ceilidh music, but with 2 guitarists and a drummer I want to make sure I am making the right choice. Would a Tour 700 be better? I prefer 2 inputs as I use both bass guitar and EUB. Any got a Peavey Tour 450/700 and Barefaced Compact set up that can advise? Cheers, Leigh
16. Hola Diego, and welcome. A Happy New Year to you! Leigh.
17. Just catching up again- thanks for all the welcomes! Acebassmusic- yep, I'm definitely considering going down the Barefaced route! And yes, an Aberdeen bass bash sounds a great idea!
18. Hi Davie, Well its a combination of needing more volume and helping my poor back. That peavey combo is pretty heavy! Cheers, Leigh.
19. Hi Acebassmusic, Thanks for the welcome. Good to know there are plenty of North East folk here. I see from your gear list you are using a Barefaced cabinet. I'm thinking of going down the Barefaced route. Would you recommend?
20.
Haha that's us! I am in a handful of bands though none who have done much really! Though i've performed around the northeast on Bass Trombone, just not bass guitar haha! Hopefully be doing more soon though. Mostly heavier music for me, hard rock, metal etc
Ah well, its still a bass forum! Lol!
21. Just remembered. I forgot to add a link to our band page. Here it is. http://www.furrybootsband.com
22. A happy New Year to you too, Hairyhaw! Leigh
23. Hi Adam, Thanks for the welcome! Good to know there are other North East loons on here! Are you in a band yourself? Cheers, Leigh
24. Hello, I've been looking at this forum for a while now, and finally decided to take the plunge and join. I'm Leigh from Inverurie, Aberdeenshire, 52, male, and been playing since I was 15. Been in various original and covers bands. Currently playing in a weddings and functions band doing covers and scottish ceilidh music. Took a 20 year break from playing while the family grew up, but absolutely loving being back playing again. I play a beautiful 1963 cherry red Gibson EB0 that has been customised with an extra Dimarzio pickup. Also play a Stagg electric upright. Both of those go through a Peavey Mk3 130W BW combo that I have owned for over 30 years, and it has never let me down once. (touch wood!) Having said that I'm looking to change to a head and cabinet, as the weight of the Peavey is getting a bit much these days. Looking towards a Peavey head - either Tour 450 or 700 and a Barefaced cab. Probably either a Compact or a Super 12. Anyway, hello, and a Happy new Year to all! Leigh.
