1. I've made one last change to the bass. The standard Pickup is replaced by a DiMarzio Model P in cream colour. Bought it for 50€ second hand, and it BLOWS! Had another bass on the workbank as well, a London City body and neck (Precision style), with a hole with could fit a ChiSonic pickup. I've put a OLP-humbucker in it, and it gives a low-end I can only dream of. Pictures will follow soon,
2. Well, I went to my mate, to work on the neck, to get it fit snuggly. At the end of the day, we did literally everything, except for installing the stringtree (which I didn't bring with me ) and intonate the guitar, which I'll do tomorrow. As far as we can see, that's all. But we found out, the single-coil is humming and cracking like an old lady, so I'll replace that one I think by an SD SPB-1 Photos: Fender MiM neck: Body, new pots, capacitor, knobs, bridge and everything else. 3.
Someone told me that the MIM necks weren't such a good fit in the Chinese Squier and USA P basses - maybe I'm dreaming it though. Had a similar problem when I put a Squier neck in my old Sue Ryder P copy. Needed to dowel the screw holes in the neck and redrill to get the optimal fit - would this work for you? Alternatively sell the MIM neck and get a Mighty Mite - these fit spot on.
Well, today I'm going to a mate who can drill the holes and fill the old ones up.
4. Thanks for your reaction Conan! My very first upgrade are D'Addario flatwounds, the P played much better after that upgrade, but I thought it could be better. Yes, the only original part is the body, which is black and will maintain it's colour. The neck is replaced by a Fender MiM P-bass neck, but it seems like that neck won't fit snuggly in the neckpocket. The position of the screwholes on the neck is a bit too far towards the fretboard, which gives this result: Though, this neck looks much, much better than the original neck, as you can see: New neck is on the body, the old neck lies above it, How much I spent (in €'s): Original bass: €15,- Schaller bridge: €40,- Bridge Cover: €20,- Pickguard: €20,- CTS Pots: €11,50,- New Tuners: €30,- Fender MiM P-bass neck: €120,- New Capacitor: €25,- Total: €281,50 (which is 233 pounds.)But, I honestly think it will play a new Affintiy P bass out of the damn water , (besides, a new affinity P costs €250 over here, so I "lose" just 30€ )
5. Bought new capacitor, €25.. but very good one, as was said to me.Also bought new tuners, Mighty Mikes, these seem to work better then the standard tuners already.. .
6. Really interesting to follow, since I'm doing exactly the same stuff! - Next week, the original neck will be replaced by an MiM Fender Precision neck. - New Gotoh tuners are ordered. - New Schaller bridge installed - New OD capacitor - bridge cover installed. Refin is a good option as well..
7. Really nice bass, looks awesome!
8. Okay, well, I can buy them for €30,- without shipping, so I'll go for that I think. Going to order them today, as well as an Orange Drop capacitor. More things to order? Don't know actually, maybe new flats for my Squier Jazz Bass, but that's not an issue for the Precision.
9. Thank you for your reaction! Do you know if the Wilkinson tuners are available in The Netherlands, where I live?
10. Little update: We found out the London City neck won't fit, so I've been looking at something else. A MiM Fender P neck for 100€! (which is 70 Pounds I believe). I will get her in at the end of the month, when the current owner will recieve his new neck. I'm happy! So, a lot of budget goes to the neck, but on the upside, there are just a few minor things to get, such as the Orange Drop and new tuners. I'm considering a Pickup-upgrade as well, but that can wait I think.
11.
Dunno, but the Affinity is standard Fender fit....any licensed neck should do. The Mighty Mite in mine was very slightly thinner and shallower but no problem in fitting.
Okay, I'm interested in a London City neck (which is, quite surprising considering the name, a Dutch brand), which should be better than the standard Affinity neck. The owner of the LC neck is checking whether the neck could/should fit, so we'll see
12. Is 96mm length and 62mm width normal for a neckpocket?
13. How does the Badass II Bridge play? I've installed a Schaller bridge, which plays a lot better and is much more chunky then the standard bridge.
14. Thanks for your reply, Martthebass! Do you have a link to a topic about your project, or some pictures, so I can have a idea of what it looks like. Sounds really good! The neck will be completely replaced by a London City neck (as far as I know as good as or better, in comparision with the current neck.) Can buy it for 60€, which is 30 pounds I believe. (Can't find the pound sign on my keyboard... )
15. Guys, I'm thinking as well of new Pickups, such as the Seymour Duncan SPB-1. I really like the P-bass tone, but I would like to have it a bit like Steve Harris, who uses the SD SPB-1 I thought? But, can you use that pickup with the normal standard P sound as well?
16. @JerryB: Such kit, does it come with a Pickguard as well? @KiOgon: I know, but I just did the Laundry, so...
17. Hi guys! I'm working on a little project to upgrade my Squier Affinity P-bass, which I bought 2 years ago. When I got it, it looked like sh*t, but it plays well. I've been doing a lot of modifications through the times, but the big things (electronics a.o.) will be done in a few weeks. This is what she looked like when I bought her.: At first, I changed her appearence by putting a new Fender strap on her, and removing the black and white gaffertape on her knobs. Then, she looked like this: (The amplifier you see is an old gee-tar amp, which is replaced by an Ampeg BA-108 last August. After a while, I decided to upgrade her totally, but on a bit of a budget, I want the total cost not to be higher then the amount of money you'd pay for a new Squier Affinity P-bass. At first, she got new D'Addario Flats, which I really like, I seem to play much faster Now, she looks like this: You see, she has a different Pickguard (lime-green), a bridgecover, a new strap (brown suited my Jazz Bass more... ), and the rosewood has been treathend with lemonoil. She now also has a new Schaller bridge, which looks awesome, it's a lot thicker and bigger then the standard bridge, which looks like it's going to fall apart anytime To-Do list: - New black knobs - Installing CTS potmeters - New black tuners - New jack And that's about it I know, it's not the most entertaining upgrade you can think of, but I find it exciting Greets from The Netherlands, Maarten
18.
Hehe, een bekende naam
Haha, VanderVeen zit hier ook al
19.
Welcome to the forum. Are you playing in a band at the moment?
Thanks for the welcome! No, I don't play in a band, I'm just practicing by listening to the music I like, and play along with the bassline. Also, I watch some covers from others to learn by myself and to learn some techniques, but I think I'm too bad to play in a band...
20. Hi Maas, I think we know each other Really nice basses do you have!
21. Hello everyone, First, I'd like to wish you all a happy 2012! I'm Maarten, 18 years old, and I live in the Netherlands. I stumbled upon Basschat by reading some good stories of it on the Dutch Bassguitarforum, basgitaarforum.nl I really love the bass since I was a little kid, I listened to a few albums, and I always heard a bomming sound underneath the guitars, and I couldn't discribe what it was, but after a few years I knew it was the Bassguitar. I play bass for about 2 years, and I have the following basses: '08 Squier Affinity Precision. I bought it for 15€ from a friend of mine. It plays very well, but it's looks weren't thaat good. The headstock and Pickfuard were damaged by a fire lighter , but it played really well. Some months ago, I decided to renovate the Precision, because I really like the sound of a P-bass, and I still have a normal stock Squier Jazz Bass Vintage Modified to play with. Things modified: This was here being standard: This is what she looks like now, with the following modifications: - Fender Bridge Cover - Different Lime Green Pickguard - New strings: D'Addario Nickle Flatwounds - New Fender Strap To be installed: - New Bridge - Different tuners (I'm working out how to install them of an Affinity, they seem to have different measures) - New CTS Pots - Maybe different Pickups, but I'm not sure. - The headstock will be renovated to his original condition, and it might become a MHS with the body colour. My Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass: The Jazz Bass has a simple modification: The tone knobs are the Fender ones, the black with white dial version, I'll post a good photo of them both very soon Amplification: A simple Ampeg BA-108, I don't need more
