We do just this very thing.

Both guitarists run Pod XT Live's straight to Desk. I resisted that last degree of digitisation and run to a bass preamp then straight to Desk.

Yes... you do cede all control to the soundman, but build a rapport and its never been an issue for us (been doing this arrangement for about 5 years now). Also, it lets the guy who can hear it all do the balance.
In terms of monitors, yes, you are dependent upon them, but thats fine by me. I vastly prefer it to having the monitor and backline fighting it out and giving me a headache.
The other thing is that the stage volume comes RIGHT down. You can hear stuff happen, and at a comfortable volume.
The other + is that you take up FAR less space as a band. As a 6 piece this was very important to us.

In terms of the patches distorting, we've never had a problem. The patches supplied are pants (IMO) but some subtle changes can yield excellent results. You need to set up the patches when playing through a PA though. The transient response of the PA is completely different to amp/headphones. The settings you come up with sound completely OTT through headphones - but put them through the PA and all sounds great.

All in all its been a revelation and we won't be going back to amp stacks any time soon!

I love my jazz deluxe too. Definitely in my 'best buy' category. Just got it set up a couple of weeks ago and I'm playing stuff I couldn't play before.

We're taking on Madonna's Hung Up (the ABBA cover).
I was wondering whether anyone had some advice on how to achieve the synthy bass part?? It sounds very bouncy and keyboard like - probably because it was a keyboard, but I'm just curious.

I think you select your lefty/rightyness at a sublimal level.
Like many here I play cricket/gold righty. I hold my knife and fork righty. Yet I never considered playing bass righty.
I've thought about this before and i attribute it back to those prepubescent days of playing air-guitar in my bedroom. I played air-guitar lefty - no rhyme nor reason for it. I was a lefty air-guitarist and it stuck from there.
To really make the point, my first bass was righty (borrowed from the bands old bassist who wanted to play lead guitar) and he taught me the basics righthanded. Yet I still flipped it over and played 'the wrong way'.

Are you really doing this because you can't find enough decent lefty basses to buy?

Sure lefties are harder to find but I think it just makes you more picky when you do find something. If its that much of a problem then start saving those pennies and get a custom bass. They aren't that much more than topend factory builds and you'll definitely keep it a lifetime.

Or is it the fact that you keep smashing headstocks on stage with your righty guitarist!?!

Pretty much - its the rarity factor that does it. I've only come across a couple of righty jaydee's in my time and they are quality pieces of kit. Similar in some ways to a Wal, just less famous.
If its been looked after then thats a good price for an instrument to last you a lifetime.

That said.... its £400 more than the Sei sold for that I was fleabaying for last week.....

Yeah. For a couple of hours I thought I had it at £510 !! Then I got outbid with 35 seconds to go, and it escalated to £895 - and I wan't counterbidding so that was at least two others fighting it out. I was an accidental bidder anyway.
Its still a bargain at £900, but I couldn't justify it. The guy was kidding himself if he thought it was worth £2000+. For that you can just about get your own personalised one made new.

I like where you're going with your last comment (Line 6 to Desk with in-ears)

All i take out with me is a decent preamp. Then you can run a really quality signal to desk and rely on floor wedges/in-ears for your own sound.

Line6 pods are cool (and both our guitarists just run through them, with no stage amps at all) but for live bass sound I'd still go for a dedicated bass preamp. You can always put the Pod into the loop to act as a headphone amplifier if you can't find a preamp with suitable outputs for your in-ears.

I've used this setup with PA's up to 120kw and it works just fine. to be honest, even with an 8x10 grinding away behind you it becomes inaudible (or a bad distraction from balanced sound) when the floor wedges pass 3kw.

I'd love to see your guitarists faces when you downscale from 8x10 to something you can carry in a rucksack!! (although the danger is that they'll never let you go back to using your old rig)

We do a whole bunch of this stuff.
Just get hold of the Killers first album for some interesting bass parts... to me the opening track 'Jenny was a friend of mine' is a great bass part and I never grow tired of that. There's even some harmonics in the middle eight for you!

I agree with much of the above. I ploughed through this edition in about 2hrs and there wasn't too much to stir the imagination.

Best thing of recent years was the 1x12 comparison that came out about 6 months ago. It was fairly incisive and actually compared different models - something mere mortals find it difficult to do due the disperate nature of equipment retails. The kind of thing I would have in mind... 'whats best? Super-redhead or Eden Metro??'. 'is the extra £400 worth it when comparing x vs. y vs. z 4x10's'

I really enjoyed the weekend warrior features of yore too.

Ps. I'll still buy it whatever though.

There's a little bit of a problem in that I'm supposed to be going to see Mrs Coasterbass' mates in Winchester that day However, I might be able to convince her to take the train, and for me to join them later in the day. its only a 130 miles after all

I was distraught at the SE bass last year when I was the only lefty there. It was like being a diabetic in a sweet shop

I used to think that a lefty bass bash could be held in a small phone box, but it seems there are enough of us to at least warrant a shed.

Following on from a recent thread about signal splitters to multiple amps, has anyone used/heard the Morley George Lynch three way splitter? I'm curious as to its performance vs. the normal 'black box' AB/Y pedal.
Does the boost control work?
