1.
Best I've come up with so far is each individual band member insuring for £500 of eqpt (home cover) which gives you £1m liabilty insurance for £26. The venue is happy seeing 5 individual policy certificates as long as they add up to £5m in total.

5 x £26 =£130.

Blimey, bloody minefield this one. Interestingly the venue hasn't asked for PAT certificates.

Anyone got anything better......MU seem to only insure the individual...am I wrong here???
Yep, thats what we have for our 'standard' cover. 6 x £1m cover.
The drawback is that this doesn't cover the 'event' or give you cover for anything whilst offstage, as mentioned in my first post, but its been good enough/cheap enough to see us through the past years.

Make sure you add the band's name in to the 'trading as' field when applying for the cover - that way they are all linked together.

2.
Is this cover for you or the whole band??
Thats for the whole band, acting as the promoter, organiser and performer for the night.

Its sometimes worth questioning the venue over the need for such large PL cover. The venue that I've booked for later this year originally required £10m which is sooooo expensive to get. I queried this and they dropped it to £5m.

3.
If the promoter doesn't ask for a list of songs and composers then you can be sure he's pocketing the PRS money.
Which is why I've called PRS before and dobbed them in. :)
I don't mind paying PRS - but I do mind someone pocketing the cash on the sly.

4. Check what the actual requirements of the venue are as there can be one critical difference, and I've just finished arranging insurance for a future event of ours.

MU cover, and indeed that of my normal PL insurance (Musicguard), only covers you whilst you are on stage and performing. It doesn't cover claims incurred as a result of the 'event' itself. ie, you are fine if some t&at pulls a speaker on top of himself, but if there is a wider problem then you are stuffed. This is critical if you count as the promoter/organiser, rather than just being a band.

I got £5m cover for the 'event' through a broker. PM me if you want the details. Think it was £196 in total.

If this isn't the requirement, and you just need to cover yourself whilst playing then I expanded my normal £1m cover to £5 for £50 for 24hrs through Musicguard

5. We've done a few gigs like this.

PRS at 3% of door receipts is standard. Never had the £27 cap. The way we've dealt with it is that its 3% of the gross sales, and is the first deduction prior to any band/promoter split.

So, for example, the door makes £1000. First deduction is £30 to PRS, then you can argue with the promoter about how to split the remaining £970.

PRS is not subject to tax, so if you are paying the venue the £30 to pass on, don't let them add VAT (which they've tried with us). If the venue are dealing with it then submit a setlist complete with artist/composer details.

6. Just bought Jon's Mesa cabs from him.
A fantastic guy to deal with and waited patiently whilst I ummm'd, arrr'd and smoothed it with the wife :)
Great gear, great guy. Many thanks.

7. Hi Jon,
Good to hear from you. I wondered if you might be interested
It is indeed a very fine cab, but my GAS took over. I suspect my spine may regret this moment, but the Schroeder is up for grabs nonetheless.
There's even someone at home in the mornings now if you wanted to drop by to pick it up :)

Nick

8. Hey Josh

Its the 4 Ohm version, at 850watts. As a single cab solution its unbeatable

As this cab was purchased from a fellow basschatter, I hope they'll forgive me posting the original pictures before I get around to sticking some current ones up. Its in very good condition.

http://picasaweb.google.com/ShuteCentral/S...ey=OuDzFkRBAkg#

As for trades... I'm afraid not. I've already made a purchase and (on pain of death from wifey) must get cash to offset the trade. Sorry.

Nick

9. All being well I've got some new cabs on their way so I was wondering what interest there would be in my current cab

Its a Schroeder 1210R, with the signed cone. Its in very good condition aside from scuffs to the corner protectors, and comes with the tough vinyl cover.

Photos to follow shortly, but would anyone like to declare an interest? Looking for c£400

Thanks

10. We have the most impratical gigging vehicles ever...

Renault Megane Coupe (mine - and no, I'm not a hairdresser)
Renault Clio
Peugeot 306 Cabriolet

And with these we tour the country with a 6 piece band!! :)

This weekend we're off to tour jersey (woo!) and we've fitted everything into the Megane and the Clio to save ferry costs.
In my coupe I have:

Schroeder 1210R
4U flightcase
pedal case
3 x Line floor pods
pedal case 2
Bass 1
Bass 2
Guitar 1
Guitar 2
Guitar 3
Guitar 4
flighcased keyboard
x-stand
3 x toms
cymbal case
snare
guitar rack
clothes/suits for 4 days
Drummer

I was well stoked!

11.
Are the stereo aux inputs pre or post eq? Pre or post effects?

I suspect it might be post in both cases, which would be unfortunate for me. Otherwise it might plug a bit of a hole in my MIDI rig.
Hi CK - the manual (on the Eden site) is non-specific and there's no signal chain diagram that I can find. However, I'm taking my WP100 out this evening and will try and test it out.

12. An amazing amp at a great price. These are real workhorses and incredibly versitile. Electrics are triple-engineered for safety and tone is incredible
Nik- I thought you were keen on one of these yourself!

13. It is sooooo subjective, but for my twopeneth...

I had the SVT4 and 410HLF, and still gig with an SVP-Pro preamp straight to desk. I also used Eden, and have tried EBS/Mesa etc.

It soooo depends on what sound you want. For my ear the EBS is too hi-fi. The rigs I've heared and used have the sensitivity set really high and I find them a little 'hissy' in the extreme topend. That said I wouldn't deny that they can sound fantastic - particularly with highoutput super-J's like the Sei/GB/Overwater etc.
Looking at Ampeg in isolation I think they still have a fantastic tone for rock. The 410HLF is a great cab and there aren't any/many other 410s out there that go that low or handle that much power. It is a b**ch to move though!!
My opinion on the SVT heads is that maybe they've gone of the boil slightly... SVT, SVT2, and even the SVT4 to a degree - these were heads that appeared all over the place and are still stock hire/touring rigs. The more recent ones tend to get replaced a little too often for my liking, but that said I haven't used one so can't really comment.

At the end of the day its about finding an amp that matches and compliments the signal from your guitar and achieves the sound that you think is right. This forum is a nightmare for getting your GAS going - particularly with regard to boutique highend kit!! :)

14. I reckon this would be the SMX series combo from mid/late 90's. Obviously a 1x15 speaker, 12 band EQ.
To the best of my knowledge Trace didn't make a 12-band EQ amp with valve frontend so I think thats a misnomer. There have been queries on here before about whether the SM and SMX series had a valve stage. The answer is no, but they had a valve replication blend on the preamp (think that was just the SMX though).
The only Trace valve amps of the 90's were the V-Type (which I know Merton is familiar with!)

Whatever it is I think you'll find it a great sounding amp with plenty of hi-fi grunt. The 1x15's in particular were real workhorses.

Relating it to the other two rigs you mention, my opinion is that it will be closer to the SWR sound than the Ampeg - BUT... it really depends how its been looked after over the years.

Enjoy!

15. I definitely support the notion of splitting the weight into individual components ie. not a combo. The heavy bits of any rig are the magnets - both in the poweramp and speakers.

Splitting to head+cab (and a +1 for Alex's barefaced cabs which do truly sound awesome and are the lightest things around) would be one step, but you might also like to think about moving to preamp+poweramp. If you have a look around, and have some cash to splash, then you should explore the lighter poweramps (am I right in thinking these are 'Class D' amps?). You can get them in 1u or 2u cases and are phenomenally light compared to the equivalent amps you find in standard heads.

You could even take this one step further and scrap the preamp.... get a Sansamp Bassdriver or equivalent and run straight into the poweramp.

At the end of the day, combo's are great in terms of minimising trips from the car/van to the stage, but they are beasts.

16. A pub called the speakeasy on gillygate has live music most evenings, or the black swan has a jazz night on a wednesday that is very good.

Good food pub on the way in from the north - http://www.blackwelloxinn.co.uk/

17. Hi,

We're thinking about playing a fairly ambitious song (for us anyway) and think we're going to need a backing track for some drum parts and bass/ambient parts.

We've got a couple of midi keyboards, and I've got a laptop. I'm guessing that these might be useful but I have no idea where to go from here.... please help.

Would the track be recorded onto the laptop? I guess that means software... but what? My computer has no midi connections and doesn't have a special soundcard - are these necessary? Any recommendations?

Many thanks

Nick

18.
Does such a thing as an all-lefty band exist out there somewhere? If not, there bloomin' should be!

Had to google it.. and there are many. Would be good to find a good one though!
We've got lefty bass (obviously), a lefty guitar, and another lefty guitar who plays righty.

19.
I'm still up for it.. Although if the numbers are weak we should probably just tag on to the next general BassBash.

I think less than 5 confirmed attendees and it's not worwhile.
Mmmm - I know I was doubtful from the start due to a clash with a Mrs Coasterbass event but that looks more and more definite so my chances of attending LeftyBassHeaven are slim :)

I'd dearly love to have a dedicated bassbash so if we can reschedule for later in the year then please count me as superkeen.

Thanks for taking it this far!

20.
Great buy for £400. Mine was £600 here in the UK but came with original case etc and hardly played, so was happy with that.
Out of interest what strings are you using on the Jazz ? I've been using Stainless Steel Elites r/wound packs but not that sure I'm gtting the best out of it with these. So expensive experimenting with strings these days.
Thats a great price too!
I've currently got it strung with Ernie Ball Slinky stainless steels (45-100?). I've been a big fan of there's for a while now. I always used Elite's, but when I got my Stingray it came with Ernie Ball's (funnily enough) and I've stuck with them since.
I buy my strings off of fleabay from a company in the states. I'll try and find the name of it, but it worked out at £10 a pack including shipping. FX rate is shagged now so it'll be more, but its still substantially cheaper than high street (sadly).

One question about your Jazz Deluxe... my mid control seems outrageously powerful, especially when compared to the treble (which isn't as 'bitey' as my Stingray's control) - any observations on that?
