1.
i've been wondering about one of those...you reckon it's worth it ?
I just got one for £40 off the basschat forum, unopened in it's box. Well worth it for that price. The envelope filter sounds pretty good, and the octaver tracks really well. I've not really found much of a use for the synth sounds, but if you fuzz them up they can sound really filthy. If you're not sure, wait around for a second hand one, that way you can get your money back!

  2. If you've got £300+ to spend, try and find an old AKAI Deep Impact, or for £60 get a Digitech Bass Synth Wah. I have the latter and it can put out some awesome sounds. It has a mode where it has 2 effects on at once, a sub-octave plus an envelope filter, put that before my £20 Danelectro French Toast fuzz pedal and you have a wicked effect for DnB.

Electro Harmonix Bass Multi Synth is also meant to be a good one, but not heard myself.

Zoom B2.1u has synths and with an expression pedal which could be interesting, but not sure how well they track your notes or how good they sound. I have a Line6 amp with built in synth and an external FBV express expression pedal, but the tracking is horrible.

  3. Here's my first board. Spider Engineering case, with rubber feet added to the wooden platform to allow the cables to go underneath. Chain is:

Ibanez LU20 Tuner -> EBS Multicomp -> DigitechBass Synth Wah -> DHA VT2 Dual Custom Bass -> Aphex Bass Xciter

The massive power supply is the 12v one supplied by DHA, and my mini 9v Johnnyshredfreak supply sits on top. The power strip is right angled so that the leads can tuck in down the side of the board to keep things tidy.

All of this has been bought within the last 6 weeks, letting off some serious GAS!

  5.
how would i go about setting soundforge up to use it?? i tried changin it in the preferences, but when i changed it from windows sound mapper to that, it no longer playbacked audio, just recorded, which is obviously prettttty useless lol
Not sure as I haven't used Soundforge in a while... I do most stuff in Sonar where it lets you select which kind of sound driver you want to use, ASIO, WDM, MME, Directsound, etc. I'll have a look when I get a chance as I still have it installed on my music pc!

  6. Open your device manager, select 'show devices by resource' and check no other cpu hungry devices are sharing the same IRQ. I had a top notch EMU 1616m but I couldn't use it as my laptop was set up so that the cardbus shared the same IRQ as the graphics card and some other devices. It crackled like you describe, but not all the time. If you're using your built in crappy laptop soundcard, you can improve performance big time by installing the ASIO4ALL driver and set Soundforge up to use the ASIO driver instead of Directsound that you may be using now, that's how I started out recording.

  7. Yes, that's how I had it. The distortion was coming from the pedal not my amp. But my seymour duncan quarter pounder p-bass pup was just too much for it at default settings and got distortion on the heavy notes, backing off the pots a bit fixed it!

  8. Don't know if you ever solved your problem, but I got a multicomp the other day with the same issue and solved it by turning the trimpots anticlockwise. They DO work for the other modes too, it's just the left/low one that affects normal/tubesim modes. They appear to work like an input gain control. Because the unit has a max of 5:1 compression, if you dig in really hard with a high output bass, it goes over the max headroom that the device can handle and produces distortion. Once you start fiddling with the trimpots you'll be amazed at how well you can fine tune your sound, I recommend every multicomp owner start fiddling with theirs. If you're not sure what you're doing and scared to mess with it, remember it's easy to set it back to normal!

  9. Spider Engineering / Flightcase Warehouse

These guys sell em, but I just bought one of the Spider ones from them, £55 for a sturdy medium sized pedalboard flightcase inc next day delivery!

  10. Forgive me for asking such a noob question, but what are the benfits of having a temperature control? I'm just about to purchase one for mucking around replacing pickups etc and may use it in the future to build or mod pedals.

Would I be able to make do with a cheap non-adjustable one (lowest is £2.99 on maplins!) or would I need to splash out on the £30+ controllable ones?

  11. I've just changed the neck pickup in my Yamaha Fretless for a Seymour Duncan quarter pounder, and it's the first time I've messed with my bass's electronics. Everything seemed to go ok but I have a small problem. The central pot is a pickup blend, fully clockwise selects the neck pup, fully anti-clockwise solos the bridge. If I have it fully on the neck pup then back it off a tiny bit, I get a crackle and the sound drops out; turn it back a bit more and the sound comes back. It's like there's a small dead zone in the pot. I'm hoping it doesn't get worse and start kicking in when the neck pickup is soloed, otherwise I'm in trouble!

Has anyone experienced this before? I'm thinking maybe heat damage could've caused it?

I might have to replace the pot, although I'm gonna have to buy a cheap backup bass first! Any help or advice appreciated...
