1. My word, there's a lot of dislike for Funk on this thread :( , but I also think there's a lot of people out there putting funk in the same category as disco or categorising other genres as funk.

Funk to me is James Brown, Parliament-Funkadelic, Bootsy, George Clinton, The JB's, Sly & The Family Stone, Graham Central Station, The Meters, Slave, Ohio Players etc, but, definitely not Chic which is disco.

Funk music's influence has grown over the years and can be found in many different genres and bands today including funk rock (RHCP, Primus), various Acid Jazz (Jamiroquai, BNH, Young Disciples, Omar, etc) and Hip-hop groups (Dr Dre & Snoop Dogg obviously have the entire P Funk back catalogue) & pop. These genres and artists make music that is funky, but, it is not funk.

To me, true funk music has a hard repetitive bass driven groove, it's much rawer, more intense, (& sensual) than disco & definitely doesn't just have to be slap (I only really play funk finger style).

Come on let's have a bit more love for the Funk!!

You mean like mine http://www.warwick.d...te&page=4&cl=EN rather boring by comparison. :(
I think the rusted look is a glorious finish. Ah well, horses for courses, 'n' all that.
But your bass doesn't have a fake rusted effect. Your bass is highly polished 100% natural bubinga isn't it? And it's a gorgeous bass to boot (he says back-tracking furiously)

3. Hi - well going back to my original post I bought one of these second hand (but in immaculate condition) for £920.

http://www.warwick.de/modules/produkte/produkt.php?submenuID=14667&katID=00000014473&cl=EN

Whether this is a good investment or not who knows!! From what some of you've already mentioned, Warwick's are at rock bottom value at the moment, 2nd hand was the sensible way forward.

As I said in an earlier post the bass is going to be well used but also get well looked after, but I love the look and sound of the bass, so that to me is the main thing.

I'll post again in 10 years time and let you know if its value has gone up or down!! ;)

4. It's pretty horrid, probably marginally worse than the rusted look Warwick custom shops with rusted body and hardware (see link below)

http://www.warwick.de/modules/produkte/produkt.php?submenuID=14667&katID=24171&cl=EN

What's wrong with natural or a gloss finish Warwick's - such lovely basses. I don't really like the 'faked' look full stop.

5. Lots of love also for Zender's playing from me. I still listen a lot to Jamiroquai's first 3 albums, and love them as much now as I did in the early nineties. Paul Turner's stuff with Jamiroquai is great too though. I think with Zender it's all about the groove, and Emergency on Planet Earth and Return of the Space Cowboy albums in particular, his playing really is the driving force behind so many of the songs.

What really amazes me most about Zender though is that since his split from Jamirioquai (in 1998?) he seems to have been on very few recordings. I think he cropped up on Mark Ronson's 'Versions' a few years ago, and did a bit of session work with Omar, but, other than that I'm not aware of many other major recordings where his bass playing can be heard?

I wish he'd get back in the studio more.

playing a bass [is] an investment - admittedly, it's unlikely to make you enough money to retire on, but that's OK; I'd rather play music than make money.
I agree fully with that paul_5 - BTW I'd still like to play the bass regularly, but I'd just like to buy a bass that doesn't depreciate heavily in value overnight, and might in the medium to long term hold it's value.

I think the question needs a little more definition - over what time frame, would you hope that the bass would keep it's value?

The value curves, getting technical, will be different for them all. But our revered "vintage" Fenders were, at one point, cheap - and people sold them for a lot less than they are now worth.

Might be worth considering. I mean, if you've got decades to play with, you might find a lot more brands keep their value.
Good question, I was think more of a medium term ownership maybe around 10 years.

buy any old crappy cheap bass, become famous. and before you know it Fender will be making a custom shop signature version of it for £2500.
Or a regular Jap version for £999. The original then becomes priceless (but still a crappy cheap one)
Ha ha :D - If you ever have the misfortune of hearing me play, you'll know the likelihood of me becoming famous is extremely improbable!!

8. The question here is can a bass ever be an investment opportunity? Or is that something you just tell the wife?

I've been looking around for a new bass recently but been a bit alarmed by how much some makes (Warwick's for example), appear to lose their value as quick as when you drive a new car off a forecourt.

Is there such a thing as a bass that can hold or become more valuable over time, any certain makes, or special editions?

9. Thanks for all the advice guys. At the moment I really like the look of the German Warwick Corvette $$ basses and seems the only way to go with these is second hand as they are so pricey new and from what everyone is saying above they don't appear to hold their value well. Some of the doublebuck special editions are absolutely stunning basses though.

Will continue to take a close look on the bay and on the for sale forum here.

10. Hi, all you Warwick owners. I've been giving some serious consideration to purchasing a first Warwick bass, but, wanted a few opinions on what differences there are between the Korean Pro & Artist Series and the German made Warwick's (other than lots more money!).

Would appreciate some honest opinions, is there a noticeable difference in sound and/or build quality, is it worth spending that much more on a german made bass?

11. I don't have any issues with sampling so long as it is creative.

As per previous posts there wouldn't be hip hop without sampling. Unfortunately many hip hop artists and producers these days rip off or regurgitate whole chunks of songs, whilst if you look at Beasties, De La Soul, Gangstarr or Tribe Called Quest it was usually a small riff cleverly introduced to create a whole new song.

The flip side of sampling also, is that it re-raises the profile of the original artist. I used to buy a lot of early 90's hip hop, find out where the sample was from and get into the original artist. The careers of the likes of legendary artists like James Brown and George Clinton were in the doldrums before hip-hop brought them back into the spotlight and effectively resurrected their careers.

12. Here's a few I've learned, all very distinctive basslines to get your groove on (but to be honest they're fairly simple as I'm not a very accomplished player). As per what's been previously said, it's all about the feel, the groove, the space and the accents, forget all the technicalities, just feel the funk. (Also you can find tab for these easily enough on the internet):

Deee-lite - Groove Is in the Heart
Charles Wright & The Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band - Express Yourself
Herbie Hancock - Chameleon
James Brown - SuperBad
Curtis Mayfield - Freddies Dead
Donny Hathaway - The Ghetto
Rick James - Superfreak
Outkast - So Fresb, So Clean
Gorillaz - Feel Good Inc - killer bass line and so simple.

13. They're not Motown artists, but Isaac Hayes, Curtis Mayfield, Bobby Womack circa late 60's - mid 70's period are worth having a listen.

Also try some Minnie Riperton (Les Fleurs Anthology is worth checking out) for some chilled out soul or Millie Jackson for something a bit more feisty.

More modern (neo-soul) stuff like D'Angelo, Maxwell, Angie Stone, Raphael Saadiq or Erykah Badu would be well worth a listen too & +1 for the Brand New Heavies - they have a new on-line instrumental album: Dunk Your Trunk which has some very nice subtle playing from Andrew 'Love' Levy

14. I've been (attempting) to play for about 10 months whenever I get the chance (which isn't that often). I previously couldn't play any musical instrument. Despite that think I've made reasonable progress in that time...I now know how to plug it in and which end to play :)

16. I can’t believe that there isn’t a thread anywhere on the web with some decent custom settings for the OS.

So I’ve had a crack at it, the attached pdf are all my own, bar ‘Screaming Duck’ (which I found on rival talkbass.com – booo, hiss).

Not sure how well this will come out as I’ve cut and pasted the settings from my excel document, so if anyone wants this in excel format please pm me and I’ll happily email you the attachment.

Would love it if anyone else could publish some custom settings of their own too, so come on all you Chunk OS owners out there!

Cheers.
